Air Miles Devalues Dream Rewards To Recoup Costs of Cancelling Expiry

Air Miles Card

Air Miles have quietly devalued the value of vacation packages or cruises using dream rewards, likely in a move to help recoup some of the costs of cancelling the expiry date on points.

Air Miles told reporters that they chose vacation packages as customers have to call in and so they adjusted the pricing because this is a “subsidized” rewards category and requires a higher level of customer support since you can’t book it online using your miles.

Air Miles have said that cancelling the expiry date of miles cost them $242 million, a huge loss to the company so more changes to the program are likely.  The terms of Air Miles allow them to make changes with no notice, so while there is no change to Cash Rewards at the moment, you may want to start spending those points.

We may change these Terms and Conditions, any aspect of the Program including booking conditions, redemption procedures or any Rewards in any respect, all without notice and even though changes may affect the value of miles already accumulated.

Are you still using Air Miles since the changes?

Bleh, I’m switching over to 100% cash miles. It was already hard enough to save enough dream miles for something decent.

Air Miles became useless years ago. No rewards, no flights, expiry … I gave up on them, and nothing can convince me to go back. I do cashback now and use the money to do whatever I want. I also have done Westjet Miles which have been good, but I tend to book on Expedia, so the cashback is more helpful with that.

I won’t be shocked at all when Air Miles shuts down and everyone is left with nothing.

I still collect them if there is a good promo but I don’t make an effort to get them on a regular weeks shop

if you get american express card platinum, first 3 months spend 1200$ you get 2000 iar miles free and each month collect air miles and first year fee on card is waived and ONLY redeem 95 air miles when Metro has spend 95 air miles and get 25 air miles back or any other offer that you get airmiles back it is one of the best rewards combinations out there,,,, rexall had a spend 285air miles ( which is 30$ worth) get 100 back and get 10$ gift coupon back on 30$ spent,,,,,,, in total thats 50$ worth ,,,, so if you redeem VERRRRRRRRRRRRY smart you can WINNNNNNNNNNNN on theback of air miles promotions ( rexall , metro, jean coutu, shell, etc )

We’ve been saving for YEARS to do a big trip, possibly New Zealand, but even trying to book now for flights in the fall, we’re having issues finding flights we want. When Air Miles decided to expire miles, we decided that, once we’d used our existing Air Miles for a trip, that would be it. Despite their reversal, after we do book a trip, and use whatever excess miles we have left over, we will stop collecting, get rid of our Air Miles credit cards, and go with another option for collecting rewards. Our experiences with trying to book both flights and car rentals with Air Miles in the past have been met with nothing but frustration. We’re done.
