New Year’s is a time for fun and celebration, and a lot of people are going to take that fun and celebration a little too seriously and over-imbibe on spirits and liquors. Whether you intend to get your drink on or just want to travel safely to avoid those who do, many cities across the country are offering free public transit tonight.

Break out the phone book and call your local transit terminal to see what arrangements have been made. Here in St. Catharines buses will be free after 8pm and running past their normal hours, offering service until 2am. I know that Go Transit and the TTC will be offering similar arrangements, but unfortunately I don’t have the specific details for the rest of the country.

If you do call and find out, let us know here in the comments. Let’s make sure that the SmartCanucks community has a safe and happy New Year!

Public transit in Toronto will be running for free between 12:01 am untill 4:00am which is not bad.. Wish it could have been before that ..

At least Toronto has busses. Ottawa’s transit workers have been on strike for over 3 weeks.

London Transit is free after 8pm and some routes will be running until 1am. The busses are going to be monitored by police all night to prevent any problems.

Good luck in Ottawa — Public transit’s been on strike for 22 days now, so be sure to take a cab, have a designated driver, crash a friend’s or a hotel, or call Operation Red Nose!!!! 819 771‑2886
