Events, Other / Canada

We are all aware of the horrible earthquake that struck Haiti recently. There has been an outpour of donations and lots of media and news attention on this cause. Tonight, CBC has a special airing called “Hope for Haiti now” and the US has their own version as well.

We are all lucky to live in Canada and have the wonderful living conditions that we do, we should all help the less fortunate and give what we can. If you have money and want to help this cause, tune into these specials, which are on right now, or look online on how to donate and where.

Important Information for Canadian Donors: If you wish to generate dollar for dollar government matching funds and receive a tax receipt, donate to a canadian charity, you must go to http://www.cbc.ca

Donated! I hope others reach in their pockets too. Even if its not much- REMEMBER- the government matches it.

  2. Justine says:

This program is really really sad, I am watching the US one, they showed a lady who was pulled out of the rubble 6 days later still alive. wow.

  3. eriluo says:

I donated for the Canadian one as the Cdn govt will match your donation and tried to donate to the US one as well but the website keeps on giving me errors, I guess too many users, which in this case isn’t a bad thing.

  4. tnatyway says:

Did my part as a Canadian citizen…..hopefully others will also!

  5. Frugiedh says:

Another easy way to donate is thru your ING account if you have one. You can do transfer from a savings account and the money goes to Canadian Red Cross and qualifies for the government matching. I think it is awesome that ING set that up. Took me 10 secs to do.

  6. mamatafari says:

just remember what the red cross did (well DIDN’T do) for the citizens of new orleans after hurrican katrina.
before you donate, ask HOW MUCH of my donation actually goes into the hands of Haitians and NOT bureaucracy??
find organizations that will donate water and goods DIRECTLY into the hands of the people.
    PLEASE!

  7. MagicalDreams says:

You can also text AID to 45678 and donate $5 to Can4Haiti. Canadian gov’t will double this as well!

It is important to remember how amazingly lucky we are to live in Canada!

  8. SnowWhiteFanatic says:

Admin fees for charities came under scrutiny after the Katrina disaster and there has since been a supreme over haul of the system. The highest a charity is allowed to charge for admin is 10%. For this particular effort, ALL 10 major charities are waving their admin fees so that 100% of the proceeds go to Haitians. DO NOT BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU HEAR OR READ. I think education is the best weapon so educate yourself before donating : ) But give til it hurts, we made just need the same returned someday……

  9. mjtjmom says:

Yeah Mamatafari!!!! You said exactly what I was thinking.

  10. fire_earth_air says:

I watched the US Hope for Haiti Now Telethon, it was so sad. I had goosebumps and tears in my eyes many times during the 2 hour show.
I wish everyone would donate a little bit, even if it’s just a loonie or toonie next time you’re at the grocery store or walmart etc.
Think about how much you save with coupons…

Maybe you can donate the amount you save with coupons during one of your grocery shops!

Also you can text HAITI to 45678 for an automatic $5 donation

  11. volunteer says:

I’m a red cross volunteer. On Monday, I will be escorting a planeload of relief supplies to the Dominican Republic. The plane will be loaded with tarps and tents for the people of Haiti and my job is to ensure that it reaches the right people. I will pass on your thoughts and prayers. Thank you for your generosity and best wishes.

  12. laltia1985 says:

You can also donate at any H&M with 100% of the donations going to unicef to help Haiti and H&M will match 100% of your donation.

I personally thought that the American one was better than the Canadian one last night…..It sounds horrible since I am Canadian but I just think that the American one really drove it home last night with all of their footage and stories….either way I donated to the Canadian one last night and it felt amazing to just help!

  14. dealsniffer says:

I just read that the Canadian one raised 9.4million last night!!!!! That is matched by the gov’t to make 18.8million!!! Way to go Canada!!! I did watch both somewhat and I found that the Canadian one focused more on hope and what the money would help with where the American one seemed to focus more on what did happen and the tradgedy. I found the Canadian one just gave me more hope that we can make a difference.

  15. Annatree says:

I watch both last night, but only donate to the canadian one, cause i know our gov was matching. plus i think for every donation over $25 you can claim it on your tax next year.

Right now i know they are only looking for cash but in a few months they will be looking for clothes, personal stuff i plan on cleaning out all my storage area, all the stuff i have manage to get for free or on sale and just shipping it down.

  16. Justine says:

tnatyway – of course the american one was better, they had like every celebrity possible there. Imagine calling in and getting steven speilberg on the phone or julia roberts?! And the performances were really great, it was really neat to watch, and very sad as well.

  17. moochi says:

hi everyone, i just had to say something, i think that donating is good of course but i think sometimes volunteers take it too far and ask for a donation that is too much.

i live in an apartment with a few friends and i don’t mind donating, but this guy and a few other ppl are advocating for some group which is supported by angelina jolie and he has no pamphlets to give me but just a website (because he says that they want to save paper), and asks me to fill a form where i have to donate a few dollars every week. like i said previously, donation is fine but i totally didn’t understand why i had to donate continuously and he kept going on and on until i said no seriously i can’t do it, then he left.

i think you can call me cheap or whatever, but i just wanted to know how you would handle a situation like that? would it be okay for you to donate weekly? I think a one-time donation is sincere enough.

  18. mhk says:

Moochi, you have to do what YOUR heart tells you to do (in my humble opinion of course). I too think a one time is good, although I think that they may have been encouraging weekly donations so that it does not hurt your pocket book all at one time. I would give to a reputable organization too. I am just wondering how many scoundrels there are out there waiting to capitalize on the plight of the Haitians and pocketing donations….

That being said, my sis walked over to the Red Cross Office, made out donations, and got temporary reciepts already.

  19. DanesMom says:

I have to totally agree with dealsniffer, “the Canadian one focused more on hope and what the money would help with where the American one seemed to focus more on what did happen and the tragedy”, we must all look at what we can do now to help those in need, not just at what has happened. My heart, my prayer and my strength goes to all Haitians and everyone affected by this devastation, there are many sad tales in Haiti tonight but there are also many amazing stories of extraordinary strength and will and miracles are still happening – a man was rescued today after 10 days in the rubble.

I have always been proud to be a Canadian but now more than ever – let’s give all we can; from those of us that can only give a few dollars to the Canadian donor that pledged $100,000 last night on the telethon, every penny counts – it all adds up. The Federal Government will match donations up to $50 Million so let’s make sure we can surpass the $50 million in private donations.

Haiti, nous vous aime! Vous êtes dans nos prières.
