Canada Needs moe Computers

In the Economist’s “Pocket World in Figures” Canada ranked 2nd amongst countries with largest computer ownership with 87.6 computers per 100 people. Not too bad compared to say Finland which only has 50 computers per 100 people. But Israel ranks in first place with 122.1 computers per 100 people so we’re going to have to buy computers like crazy to catch up  .

More detailed rankings can be found here

Japan is a gadget nation. The fact that they rank so low is because they all have high tech cellphones that can do what most people do on the net. I feel that Canada rank so high because our phones are behind.

Besides, is this chart even reliable? Whoever composed it can’t spell Canada.

Yo! Typo! “Canda” is an unrecognized country. Please respecify.

We are supposed to believe the Israelis have more computers than people? Where in some Mosaid Intellegence Mainframe? I find it a bit hard to believe given the number of Palestinians in camps and other poor living conditions.

Having just been there, Israelis are some of the most computer savvy in the world and this includes the Palestinians who have their own universities etc.

I’ve seen Canada written as Camada somewhere.. can’t quite put my finger on it (**wink wink Boo :D Just playing ) I wonder how they figure this out? I didn’t get a call to ask how many computers I own. Actually sitting here and thinking about it I can’t think of anyone that I know that doesn’t own a computer or lappy.

You know what? It doesn’t surprise me that Israel is on top considering that:

Israel has the highest ratio of university degrees to the population in the world.

Israel has the highest average living standards in the Middle East. The per capita income in 2000 was over $17,500, exceeding that of the UK.

On a per capita basis, Israel has the largest number of biotech start-ups.

Israeli scientists developed the first fully computerized,no-radiation, diagnostic instrumentation for breast cancer.

The cell phone was developed in Israel by Motorola, which has its largest development center in Israel.

The Pentium MMX Chip technology was designed in Israel at Intel.

Both Microsoft and Cisco built their only R&D facilities outside the US in Israel.

The AOL Instant Messenger was developed in 1996 by four young Israelis.

As a student of information I think universal access is absolutely fantastic…We don’t need more computers per se, but we need to share the computers with people who are denied access for reasons of socio-economic and political reasons! yay computers!
