wow a 6 cent jump. That’s a lot. In the past its usually been 2c. Good old Canada Post. Remember when they were trying to put a tax on the internet becuase it was killing their business?

  2. Michelle says:

The proposed new rate is only a 2 cent jump, up to 59 cents.

  3. Sally says:

I’m just going by the information I received 🙂

  4. TJ says:

Apparently its only going to be 2 cents according to the CP website , but these are just proposed prices …so who knows they might make it 63 c.

Also don’t forget the HST that was added to them this year from July 1st in ON & BC ..prior to that you only paid GST on them in ON/BC ..so that’s an additional tax / expense which you didn’t have before 🙁

CP website states $0.59, effective January 17, 2011.

Your birdy is a nutball.. tell him/her to get help! 🙂
OTTAWA, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – June 25, 2010) – As part of a five year pricing strategy announced in 2009, Canada Post wishes to remind Canadians that the domestic basic letter rate will increase by 2 cents, from 57 cents to 59 cents, for standard letters weighing up to 30 grams effective January 17, 2011.

  7. Did you know you can buy permanent stamps whose price never changes? Now is the time to stock up!

  8. sean says:

Hi all, quick question: Getting married next year, so I’m thinking about buying bulk stamps before price rise. Does anyone know where I should look to buy stamps? I have a friend who bought stamps at Costco, but is that the best deal? Thanks!

  9. Shelly says:

I agree with NewfBC. Just go to the Canada Post website to get the correct info. Stamps never go up more than 2 or 3 cents. It wouldn’t go up that much. Definitely stock up on the permanent stamps. They are good even when the price goes up.

  10. Deb says:

    Good ol Canada Post!!
Price of postage goes up & their good ol customer service goes downhill! Go figure!
Hence the reason why I DON’T use Canada Post, unless I absolutely have to! Purolator, DHL, UPS & Dynamex give me much better & faster service at a much lesser cost!

  11. L. Wilson says:

sean: I usually get bulk stamps at Staples because it is convenient, unless I want fancy ones, then I go to the postal office. COSTCO is probably a good choice.

Every once in a blue moon Shopper’s Drug Mart has a sale on stamps (usually right after the price increase in January), but buying them now as Permanent is the best bet.

Deb: I think that seems to be the Canadian Retailers motto for 2010 – raise the price, lower the service!

  12. TheGirlOutWest says:

Usually Rexall has a sale with 10% off stamp packs. I bought a whole bunch of them last year, and I think it was just before Christmas. These were the P stamps that you can use forever. Costco rolls are a good deal, too.

  13. Saphir says:

SDM will have a sell on stamps next week starding on the 27. I think it 10% but I can’t find my next week flyer….I can’t confirm…

  14. FallenPixels says:

2c on a regular stamp, but a fairly big jump on heavier mail that will certainly make me think about using other carriers for those mailings

    Up to 30g $0.59
    Over 30g up to 50g $1.03 (up from $1.00)
    Oversized/Non Standard
    Up to 100g $1.25 (from 1.22)
    Over 100g up to 200g $2.06 (from $2.00)
    Over 200g up to 300g $2.85 (from $2.75)
    Over 300g up to 400g $3.25 (from $3.00)
    Over 400g up to 500g $3.50 (from $3.25)

  15. Abby1 says:

sean: I second TheGirlOutWest. I buy 10 or 12 (depending what the store has) packs of P stamps at Rexall/Pharma Plus when they go on sale for 10% off (like they were last week). I’m definitely watching for that sale again before the year runs out. If Saphir is right, and SDM has stamps on 10% off next week, then I’ll be purchasing some more there.

  16. Sally says:

I think Im gonna have to go bird hunting :

  17. Sandra says:

Now do you wonder why people use e-mail instead of mailing letters. For sure, next year I WON’T BE SENDING OUT Christmas Cards.
And to think for 63 cents we MIGHT get delivery twice a week. In the US, most places get delivery twice a DAY. What is wrong with that picture????

  18. Danam314 says:

Little birdie here… I’m reporting what my Post Office told me personally. Friday my favorite post office lady told me to guess what stamps were increasing to in January. I guessed $0.58. She said they got notice today it would be $0.63. Another worker overheard us chatting and had a conniption that my favorite lady told me (as they were not given the go ahead to tell anyone yet). They were also given the next 5 year proposed increase list and it has stamps priced at $1.35 by 2014. Don’t shoot the messenger!

USPS is condering dropping to 5 day a week service and operate with a 7 BILLION dollar loss every yr. Canada post does not operate at a loss.

Also one comment said that they were going to use Purolator for delivery and avoid Canada post…Just so you know Purolator is owed my Canada post in Canada.

  20. Gazpache says:

WOW…. makes me glad I stopped selling things on ebay! The shipping 5 years ago for that was insane, I can’t imagine what it would be today. I know just buying things is wild but selling was always worse because you could never ever count on CP’s rate calculator to be right so you always ate the difference. Very happy for online bill payments.

  21. Mellie says:

@sean: I get stamps in bulk at Costco. A roll of 100 stamps is only a couple of dollars below regular price, but any savings on stamps is a good thing. Some drug stores do put them on sale, but I find those sales are few & far between. Stick with Costco, IMO. They’re permanent, so leftovers can be used anytime.

  22. Marnie says:

Stamps without a value are the best!!!

  23. espresso-romance says:

This is in reply to someone who says they’ll be using courier services instead of Canada Post.

I don’t know how many of you SCers receive packages at home, but I do quite a bit of online shopping. And I HATE UPS with a passion. Why? I don’t work in an office or similar type of work environment so I can’t get packages delivered to work. I DON’T have a car which means I can’t drive out to the UPS depot by the post office if I miss all three delivery attempts. I don’t have any “friendly” neighbours who will keep the package or me if I’m at work. If I want to take the bus or public transit out there, the closest it’ll get me will still mean I have to walk for half an hour. I don’t mind Purolator or Fedex because they actually have locations within the city where you can pick up the package that are only 20 mins or so away from where I live. And totally accessible by public transportation. I always love getting packages from Canada Post. Why? The nearest one is 10 mins away. Also, Canada Post has always been great service, sometimes faster than those courier services in my receiving my packages on time. So as a reciever of packages, that’s my two cents.

  24. espresso-romance says:

***Correction, I meant to say: I can’t drive out to the UPS depot by the AIRPORT, not post office. 😛

  25. Rachel says:

Many of my local pharmacies sell stamps at a 10 or 15% discount at the beginning of December. Stock up then!

  26. MariAngel says:

You know, with email being free, you would think that Canada Post or any other postal service to be honest might want to think about lowering their rates… or they’ll find themselves with fewer and fewer residential customers…

  27. Marie says:

if you think about it .57 cents to take a piece of mail from ON to BC is not bad, I am sure that the cost for that is way higher. Costco is your best deal to buy stamps in Bulk i think and permanent stamps can be used any year because they have no valaue assigned to it!

  28. Deb says:

PettyFan >> Yes, I know Purolator is owned by Canada Post, BUT their costs are much more reasonable, as well as being much more dependable than actual Canada Post! And just so you know, I use DHL, UPS & Dynamex more than I ever use Purolator, just because those are NOT owned by Canada Post!
espresso-romance >> I receive pkgs at home, as well as at work. If I am not at home, & am expecting a parcel to be delivered, I leave a note where to leave the pkg & it is left each & every time, as long as I dont have to sign for it. Pkgs delivered by courier do not have to be signed for each & every time, only if the sender requests it.
I refuse to pay 63c to mail a letter to anywhere in Canada…email is free!
Like “MariAngel” says… “You know, with email being free, you would think that Canada Post or any other postal service to be honest might want to think about lowering their rates… or they’ll find themselves with fewer and fewer residential customers…”
Actual Canada Post has lost me as a customer & I refuse to pay their overpriced costs unless I absolutely have to!

  29. Doris says:

1 cent, 2 cents…6 cents – I don’t care, whatever it is, it is to much. They are just losing more business – to the convenience of computers. For sure wages/pensions won’t go up to cover all the increases of mortgage, fuel, power, food, etc……

  30. Chis says:

Look at it in different terms my friends. $0.59 ($0.63 even) is not even worth my time to walk a block to deliver something if asked (of course I would do it for free for a friend…) Canada Post however will pick up your mail from a predetermined location whether it is a Post Office or a Mail Box, sort it, send it anywhere in the country and deliver it most often in just a few days for that price. That is a fantastic deal.

I use email all of the time. At work, at home, on my phone. And I send email to friends and family, pay my bills online but when it comes down to it, nothing beats opening up your mailbox and seeing a greeting card or a written (hand written even better) note from a loved one.

    Email will never replace that.

  31. CaseysCoupons says:

My mother works for Canada Post and she’s investigating for me… I doubt there would be that large an increase without a solid justification. They definitely don’t pay their employees enough right now… if the increase were to go to postal employee wages, I’d pay it in a blink. Most of them don’t make enough to justify the conditions they work in. Don’t forget to tip your delivery person this holiday… they serve us every day, usually putting up with endless requests (this flyer, not that flyer, hold my mail, don’t hold my mail, I forgot my key, I’ll be on vacation, can you help me with this parcel to my car? etc. etc.) with no recognition.

  32. nguyen3828 says:

SEAN: Rexall PharmaPlus, usually have the stamps for 10% off, hope that’s help…

  33. Sean says:

Many thanks all for the help! I think Costco may be my answer and I’ll check the prices out. But if SDM or Rexall have a better price then they win!
Cheers and thanks again all who commented!

  34. FallenPixels says:

Canada Post as a corp needs to have their rate increases approved, they were posted earlier this year as proposed rates at 59c and are still listed as proposed so could change to 63c but I highly doubt they would be allowed to increase it by such a rate when they have an effective date of the proposed price and if they only asked for 59c, it would be very rare that they would approve something over it

  35. FallenPixels says:

Never mind, I checked the Gazette, the rate increase was approved at the proposed prices on their website, they also made some changes to returned mail regulations and (this one may impact people)

that mailboxes should be at least 45cm and no higher than 170cm from the floor so the mail-person doesnt have to bend

that rural mailboxes no longer have to show names, just the street number

registered mail up 1.9% to $8.10

They also approved the increase for regular P stamps of 2c this year and 2c for each of the following 4 years for 5 years total, although they can ask for additional increases in those years as approved in 2009 and no amendment was made

  36. Dave French says:

Idiots here that won’t pay an extra .06 for a stamp. See how much it costs to get a handwritten letter to a loved one if you drove it yourself. I think Canada is one of the cheaper countries to mail letters. Sending a letter to a loved one in Afghanistan is PRICELESS.

  37. C_mcarthur says:

Its only going up to 59 cents
I got confirmation from an insider from canada post itself
so dont jump the guns everyone.

  38. elaela says:

I like Canada Post. I don’t like the price increase. Guess I need to stock up soon.

Wow this sounds exactly like my situation. Another thing that drives me crazy is companies that don’t tell you what shipping company they use and make you jump through hoops to find out. If a company uses UPS to ship then I have to re-evaluate how badly I want that item.

  39. Awesome weblog! I do not feel I’ve experienced each of the angles of this matter the best way you’ve got pointed them out. You are a real star, a rock star guy. You’ve got acquired a lot to say and know a great deal regarding the matter that I believe you’ll want to just educate a class about this…HaHa!

  40. It is perfect time to make some plans for the future and it’s time to be happy. I’ve read this post and if I could I want to suggest you few interesting things or advice. Maybe you can write next articles referring to this article. I wish to read more things about it!
