Canada Post To Keep Door to Door Delivery In Toronto’s Downtown Core

Announcements

Canada Post is in the midst of replacing traditional door to door mailbox service in many parts of Canada with community mailboxes in order to save on costs, however residents of Toronto’s downtown core will likely get to keep their door to door service. This decision has been made due to the fact that there are actually very few individual addresses in the downtown core, as many addresses are condos, apartments, or office buildings who have mail rooms or lobby drop off already.

Canada Post has mentioned this in their outline for the preliminary plan for the switchover in Toronto. Canada Post considers Toronto’s downtown core to be bordered by Bathurst St., Bloor St., the Don Valley Parkway and Lake Ontario. There are approximately 22,000 residential addresses in the core area who will be unaffected by this change as other parts of Canada switch over to community mailboxes.

Toronto’s “dense urban” neighbourhoods,  bordered by Jane St.-South Kingsway in the west, Lawrence Ave. in the north, and Victoria Park Ave. in the east are expected to switch over to community boxes in 2018-19. Other areas are expected to switch over as early as 2017.

This is the first two-tiered plan that Canada Post has come up with as they make the controversial transition to community mailboxes in order to save operation costs. This plan has caused out cries in various communities, with some even taking the postal service to court.

As of now, no similar plans regarding door to door service have been made for other large cities.

Um.. by community boxes does that mean those mail boxes stand that they have for new development areas, and for those houses by Erin Mills Mall in Mississauga? … If so, then they shouldn’t complain too much, because if those residents have been dealing with it, so can they ! Geeze… the nerve of people to take Canada Post to court?? Times have changed, get with the program !

Yes, the boxes with multiple boxes.
Much of the issue of switching is that they are not planned areas and Canada Post have put them in ridiculous places. One person in my area came home to find one in the middle of his new driveway area for example because it is the best location for CP (the boxes are so many metres from houses).
Many downtown core areas will likely see the same as Toronto per the original plan, there are too many businesses and apt buildings.

lol to the taking the court! Yeah it does suck tho. it’s so much easier to have mail delivered to ur door. I’ve seen these community boxes in Brampton so I know exactly what they’re talking about….what would they do about big parcels tho?? The boxes don’t really look that big. I hope they take a long time to get to make the switch in my area lol

I want to keep door to door delivery, if anything, for seniors and those that are unable to walk that for for a post box in the winter.
