Canadian Quick Questions: Should Governments Legislate Your Child’s Chores?

Other / Canada

chores

Spain recently approved legislation that requires children to

  • help out with the housework ‘in accordance with their age and regardless of their gender;
  • ‘participate in family life’ and respect ‘their parents and siblings’
  • ‘respect school rules’ and ‘study as required’
  • children ‘will have to maintain a positive attitude about learning’
  • ‘respect their teachers and other staff at education teachers’

Most of them seem like things children should be doing anyway, but what do you think of the government legislating how you parent.  Currently they do not have penalties in place if children do not follow through on these new laws but they may follow when the bill goes to final approval.  As children, we were expected to help with chores but the government making that decision for my parents seems like too much too me.

Side note – Spain already has a legal requirement in its marriage contract for men to help with all household duties including childcare – with legal ramifications including impacting divorce settlements!

What do you think of the new law?

I don’t think the government should take part in this! I mean these are things you should teach your child to do anyway. I don’t want the child to grow up learning they do these things because the laws SAYS so. I want them to learn about respect and responsibilities naturally.

yes, its a great idea. With so many parents busy these days having the government help In raising of our children is a GREAT idea. Most parents don’t really know what is good for their children anyway so having the government there to tell us is a great help.

WWWTTTFFF????? maybe they should control our minds as well….. I think people should not be allowed to have kids unless they can pass a mental health test and take a few paenting courses. Then there would be no need for this silliness.

sad that common sense needs to be legislated.

I think we are human not robots, next we will open the door for a senior or disable only if there is a law. So whenever no law or penalty no care, no moral values, no sense of responsibility. Decline of humanity and still we claim that we are developing.

  6. Peppermint Patty says:

Absurd. None of their business. No matter how poorly people parent it’s their responsibility and not anyone else’s place to tell someone how to parent.

  7. Lori says:

I’m all for it! Some parents NEED common sense legislated. I attended my son’s school one day as a parent helper for a trip to the museum. I was at the back of the classroom waiting and I watched one girl behaving terribly. She was rude, disruptive and refused to listen to the teacher. Turns out the other parent helper in the room was her MOTHER and that woman did not say a word to her child or even look like the behavior bothered her. Respect is sorely lacking in this generation and it starts with parents.

  8. Leslie says:

Great idea! We need that in Canada. And there should be instant conscription after graduation.

  9. Sandra5 says:

I don’t see how these laws can be fairly enforced without cameras in the home or at least inspectors coming to visit and observe.

    Nope

I agree with Lori. Some parents absolutely NEED common sense legislated. Ever since my child went to school I’m in increasing shock of how parents believe they should not restrict their kiddos development with such “nonsense” as manners and proper behavior.
But, the question was if the legislation for kids is a good idea. And I don’t think so. It will only add troubles for good parents who are trying to teach their kids some values.

The government needs to stay out of people’s business. This sounds like dictatorship.
