Gas Nozzle Locking Clips Are Back

Petro-Canada is bringing back the locking clip on the gas nozzles! In 2002 Canadian Fuels member companies removed the clips for safety reasons. But since the introduction of Gasoline Flow Rate Regulations (currently set at 38 litres/minute) and Onboard Fuelling Vapour Recovery technology in vehicles, those safety risks have been greatly reduced.

So, for guest convenience (and keeping hands warm!), Petro-Canada is re-introducing the locking clicks on gasoline nozzles across the country, except in Quebec where they are not legal. Stasy Presutto, Manager of Environment, Health & Safety for Petro-Canada, who is leading the implementation of the locking clips, is keen on the implementation: “The locking clips deliver an overall positive guest experience and greatly reduce the probability of gasoline spills. In the absence of locking clips, we have seen guests insert objects (e.g. gas cap, coffee cup) into the nozzle thereby causing gasoline spills.

Now, while the clips are very convenient, you can’t just “set it and forget it”. Site Staff will still be monitoring the dispensing of fuel and you can do your part. Stay within 7.5 metres (25 feet) of your vehicle while using the locking clip. This means you can wash your windshield or even get back in your car to stay warm. But please don’t enter the store until you have finished pumping your gas. Otherwise the attendant will, for safety reasons, halt the pump until you return.

What do you think about the return of the locking clip?

In other news, select cities across Canada will enjoy door-to-door delivery service with the launch of Starbucks Delivers this summer. In teaming up with Uber Eats, the new service will give customers in Toronto, Vancouver, and Calgary more ways than ever to order and enjoy their favourite Starbucks® food and beverages. McDonald’s Canada Classic Burgers Get a Juicy Makeover – $3 Big Mac

The Classics, Remastered: McDonald’s Canada revamps its iconic burgers! McDonald’s Canada is shaking up the way it cooks and serves its classic beef burgers. Whether it’s a Big Mac, Quarter Pounder or Cheeseburger, Canadians will now enjoy a more delicious experience in every bite of their classic beef-burger favourites at participating McDonald’s restaurants across the country.

McDonald’s is enhancing its burger experience through a number of small changes to how burgers are cooked and served, starting with cooking its 100 per cent Canadian beef patties in smaller batches. Additionally, several aspects of the ingredients and process are getting a makeover, including improved produce storage and warmer buns. Together, these changes make a big difference that will enhance the taste and quality of McDonald’s classic burger lineup.

The full suite of burger improvements include:

  • 100 per cent Canadian beef patties now cooked in smaller batches for hotter and juicier beef*
  • Storage changes for fresher and crisper produce
  • Onions added directly on the patties**on the grill to intensify flavour
  • More of legendary Mac Sauce applied on Big Macs
  • New bun recipes for warmer buns

This move not only marks the next evolution of the McDonald’s beef journey, but it also builds on the organization’s strong foundation around menu transparency, dedication to using sustainably sourced Canadian beef and commitment to serving great tasting burgers made with quality ingredients.

McDonald’s beef patties are 100 per cent pure Canadian beef, made from cattle raised by ranchers primarily located in Alberta and Saskatchewan, and – with the exception of a pinch of salt and pepper – produced without any artificial preservatives, fillers, colours or flavours.

*Than prior classic burgers. **Excluding the Quarter Pounder lineup.

From August 13-19, 2019, McDonald’s is offering a $3 Big Mac at restaurants nationally, to encourage Canadians to taste the difference in this remastered classic beef burger.

We’re making a number of small changes to our burgers that add up to one big taste difference for our guests,” said Nicola Pitman, Director of Menu Innovation and Management, McDonald’s Canada. “These improvements will not only result in hotter, juicier and tastier burgers that are cooked to perfection, but also showcase our ongoing commitment to ensuring Canadians get the best burger every time they visit McDonald’s.”

Sobeys to become First National Grocer to Eliminate Plastic Bags

Sobeys eliminates plastic bags as first step in removing unnecessary plastic from retail and focuses on promoting reusable, sustainable alternatives that drive long-term behavioural change. Sobeys Inc. announced yesterday that it will remove plastic grocery bags from all Sobeys grocery stores by the end of January 2020. The change will take 225 million plastic grocery bags out of circulation at Sobeys’ 255 locations across Canada each year.

The move represents an important first step in the retailer’s journey towards eliminating unnecessary plastic from grocery stores. Starting with eliminating plastic grocery bags from Sobeys stores in 2020, the Company will quickly follow with phasing out plastic grocery bags and introducing paper bags in all other banners including Safeway, FreshCo, Foodland and others. The most immediate next step the Company will take will be to remove plastic grocery bags from IGA stores on Montreal Island in Quebec. IGA will also launch a campaign in September 2019 to encourage reusable bag adoption.

So many of our customers and our employees have told us loud and clear — they want us to use less plastic — and we agree with them,” said Michael Medline, President and CEO, Empire. “This is a first step, and we plan to make meaningful progress every year to take plastic out of our stores and our products. We decided to act now instead of taking years to study and only make long-term commitments. We’re taking action now, making a tangible difference today and into the future. This is a significant first step, but it’s only a first step. We need to go further, and we will.”

While the plastic grocery bags are phased out of each Sobeys banner, the retailer will launch innovative and unique programs to reduce plastics in other areas of the store and encourage customers to choose reusable bags that can be used repeatedly and returned for recycling at Sobeys stores.
