You know it wouldn’t be long before Canada got their own budget airline, following the trend that has been sweeping across Europe and Asia for the past few years. And so the announcement from West Jet Canada that they are launching a new budget airline, Swoop Canada, was met with a warm welcome from Canadians who have long been itching from the travel-bug.
Right now, you can get one-way airfares on Swoop for as little as $39 as part of their intro offer, but you had better hurry as these offers are going fast!
To receive this fare, you will have to book by February 7 at 11:59m MT, or until the flights are sold out (the latter will most likely happen before the former!)
How, you may ask, is Swoop able to provide such discounted fare? Well, first of all, the fare will cover just that – your fare. This means that you’ll get just a guarantee of your seat and one personal item (not carry-on). You will pay more for checked bags, watching movies, for additional legroom, or for the option to access wi-fi.
Also, since this airline is still in the early stages, you will have a fairly limited scope of where you can fly within Canada. The routes will initially include six weekly flights between Abbotsford and Hamilton and six weekly flights between Hamilton and Halifax. And then starting on June 25, Swoop will add six weekly flights between Hamilton and Edmonton and between Hamilton and Winnipeg.
When I last checked for June, there were one-way flights going from Halifax to Hamilton in June for just $99; as a source of comparison, Porter, who used to be considered the discount fare airline, sold me a one-way ticket from Halifax to Hamilton in March for double that price.
This is a nice little incentive to take the whole family out for a movie night, or even just to pile all your friends in a car so as to avoid the TTC. Right now, the City of Toronto is offering you the chance to grab parking downtown for FREE. Yes, you heard correctly. Free. Downtown. Parking.
To qualify for this offer, you will first have to download the Green P app (Android or iOS) and then you will have to park in one of the spots along the King Street Pilot, as shown on this map. You will then have to enter the promo code, kingpilot, when you are paying for your parking. This will automatically give you a $10 credit, worth two hours of parking.
You can use this offer a maximum of once per day and it will be available until November 2018, meaning you can enjoy it all through the summertime as well.

These companies are trying to control and censor our internet. They are trying to block access to what they consider are “piracy sites”. But once they are able to censor one kind of sites, expect them to censor anything that they don’t like or anything that goes against their business, political views or money making ability. It all starts with one step.
I know I will not be supporting any of these companies in any form or shape and if you care about censorship neither should you.

Starting today, your old Shoppers Optimum and PC Plus cards will no longer be valid as the two loyalty reward programs will be merging to rebrand as PC Optimum.
PC Optimum will largely still function the same way that the other two rewards programs ran, but you will need to download the new app and trade-in for new cards in order to begin collecting points.
You will also need to register your card online at PC Optimum. After you’ve completed all of these steps, you’re well on your way to take advantage of exclusive offers and events.
The collection of the points in this new program will run the same, but the way that those points can be redeemed will be a bit different.
For those of you who were part the PC Plus program, the redemption of 20,000 points will still be equal to $20, however the minimum threshold for redeeming those points has been dropped to just 10,000 (before it was 20,000).
Within the Shoppers Optimum program, the online calculator for converting from Shoppers Optimum points to the new program shows that if you have 95,000 Shoppers points that will now equal 170,000 new points. And in the new program, 170,000 works out to be $170 worth of rewards.
When you are collecting points in the new program, every dollar you spend will provide you with 15 PC Optimum points, which is much better than the old Shoppers Optimum program as $1 only provided 10 points.
Are you excited about the new changes that Loblaws is making to their rewards program?
A Canadian watchdog group that monitors fair competition within the country has uncovered information that alleges that two of the largest wholesalers for bread were involved in a 16-year-long price-fixing scandal, the CBC reported.
In court documents revealed on Wednesday that were, until recently, sealed, the watchdog group found that senior officers from Canada Bread Company Ltd. and George Weston Ltd. had met with five retailers to make a deal about hiking the prices of bread. If charged, the Competition Bureau believes that the two wholesalers could be convicted for committing indictable offences under the Competition Act.
The raise, which was said to be seven cents, began happening back in 2001 and is suspected to have continued into 2017.
After the price was set, the suppliers then met with the five retailers – Loblaws, Walmart, Sobeys, Metro and Giant Tiger – to get the green light for making the increase. This increase, however, was only agreed upon after the retailers got confirmation that the competition would maintain a fixed price on the bread.
“Further, the retailers demanded that the suppliers actively manage retail competition by co-ordinating retail prices for their respective fresh commercial bread products and ensuring pricing alignment amongst the retailers,” the CBC reported the documents as reading.
With the bread price increasing at wholesale by seven cents, the retail price would then reflect a price bump of 10 cents; this scaling system became known as the ‘7/10’.
Investigation into this matter began back in December, after Loblaw and George Weston stepped forward to the watchdog and confessed to their involvement in the industry-wide conspiracy. Because of their forthcomingness, these two have received immunity in the ongoing investigation, while the remaining companies are said to be cooperating.
In a statement issued from Loblaws spokesperson Kevin Groh, he asserted that the company had “admitted” their role, but that “you cannot price fix alone”.
