Reminding everyone living in Ontario that starting January 1st, 2018, OHIP will start its OHIP Plus program which will come with many new benefits. Most prominently, children and youth 24 and under will get their eligible prescriptions covered by OHIP. This includes Asthma inhalers and EpiPens.

  • Sunday, January 14, 2018 – 01:00 PM to 02:00 PM: How to Insulate. We’ve got a workshop that will teach you how to insulate attics and crawlspaces. Sealing air leaks, weather stripping doors and windows, and installing door sweeps are also covered. (Registration closes Jan 07, 2018)
  • Saturday, January 20, 2018 – 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM: How to Drywall. This workshop provides information on the techniques of installing drywall in your home. (Registration closes Jan 13, 2018)
  • Sunday, January 21, 2018 – 01:00 PM to 02:00 PM: Install Laminate Flooring: learn to measure, cut and laminate flooring. You will learn how to undercut door jambs, make tricky cuts, and lay laminate to create attractive, long-lasting floors. (Registration closes Jan 14, 2018)

The food recall warning posted December 22, 2017 has been updated to include additional product information. This additional information was identified during the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s (CFIA) food safety investigation.

HQ Fine Foods is recalling various brands of sandwiches from the marketplace due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Consumers should not consume the recalled products described in here.

What you should do

Check to see if you have recalled products in your home. Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased.

If you think you became sick from consuming a recalled product, call your doctor.

Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Although infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, the infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or even stillbirth. In severe cases of illness, people may die.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.

UDPATE: There are currently 41 cases of E.coli infections in five eastern provinces linked to romaine lettuce. While @CFIACanada is testing romaine lettuce for the presence of E. coli as part of the food safety investigation, these illnesses appear to be ongoing and indicate that contaminated romaine lettuce may still be on the market (including in restaurants, grocery stores, and any establishments that serve food).

Romaine lettuce can have a shelf life of up to five weeks, so it is possible that romaine lettuce purchased over the past few weeks may be contaminated and still in your home. Individuals in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador should consider consuming other types of lettuce, instead of romaine lettuce, until more is known about the outbreak and the cause of contamination.
