For those of you who haven’t noticed yet, Chapters online has a new section call shortcovers and it is full of ebooks.  Ebooks have become more popular now that there are ebook readers and cell phones that will allow you to read them.  As a way to promote this section of their website, Chapters has an offer on right now that will allow you to download a free ebook of your choice (from a selected list) or choose any ebook for 33% off with coupon code Nov33 at checkout.  If you’ve never read an ebook this is a good time to give it a try.

Click here to check out shortcovers at Chapters.

Thanks to couponlady for this heads up.

    tried to download and couldn’t figure it out (even after registering)…too complicated

    Sorry, hard to be enthused about this. All the “free” books on their list are old enough to be out of copyright and at least the one I chose, is just a link to web pages of the book, and not actual ebooks that you download to read off-line. All of this stuff has been available for years through the gutenburg site, and it looks like that is the source for these books that chapters is making hoopla about providing.

    Just a heads-up — the Shortcovers website is completely separate from Chapters, which means you *can not* use Chapters gift certificates at Shortcovers.

    I received a Sony Ereader for my birthday, and my mom gave me $75 worth of Chapters gift cards to fill it with e-books. I couldn’t figure out how to redeem them until customer service told me that they didn’t actually accept them at Shortcovers.

    Plus the Shortcovers website is dreadful — trying to browse anything is hopeless.

    I want to get a Sony Reader, or a Kindle.. BUT what is that thing the kid is holding in the ad? does that exist?

    I am always grateful to find free ebooks download being offered online. Freeloaders will definitely enjoy this treat. Thanks for sharing the site! It may not benefit everyone, but there will always be somebody who will have a great use for these ebook downloads.

    The “Beijing Complete public transport guide” specifically designed for all English-speaking tourists and visitors to Beijing. This guide will enable you to get around Beijing with confidence and ease. The guide will save you lots of time and money. It was designed as a way to help you find the information you need quickly.

    Beijing is a huge metropolis. Most of its people do not understand a word of English. In addition, when you finally find English speakers they seldom have the information you need to get to your destination. Taxi drivers often do not understand English. They often refuse driving long distances or take you to the ‘general destination’ only, which may be several kilometers away. Traffic jams are very common and taking a taxi can prove to be a costly and time-consuming exercise. Beijing’s extensive public transport system, including buses and subways, offers the most cost effective and efficient way to travel.

    The “Beijing Complete public transport guide” has extensive information on Beijing’s public transport system — including details of over 22,000 bus and subway stations.
    The guide has detailed information sorted by
    * Time tables
    * Bus & Subway routes
    * A full list of bus stops, sorted in both English — Chinese and Chinese — English
    * A full list of popular destinations (such as major tourist attractions, markets, museums, temples, universities, hospitals, parks) and how to get there using public transport.
    * Most popular and highly appraised hostels

    The guide includes both English and Chinese names and characters throughout. This will enable any non-English speaking Chinese to help you. Just point the right spot in the guide.

    I fell asleep while reading my Kindle. Upon awakening I found that the device shut down automatically. I restarted the device and it opened to the page I had been reading. Nice touch !!

    I looked at the free books section. Looks like a lot or all of these will be pre-loaded on the Kobo anyways, so ya, hard to be enthused about these ‘classics’ which most people read because they were required to in school. Where’s the popular stuff? New titles? Surely a deal could have been worked out to release some current author’s work for free download? iTunes does it with their weekly free downloads.

    Also, I throw my comments behind anybody who is complaining about the ease of use on Shortcovers. ugh!

    It’s odd that the comment that I left yesterday and saw posted has been removed by today (May 6). What I said was along the lines of agreement with the post by Lisa Kirwain above (Nov 18) that the free books are of the sort of ‘classics’ that we had to read — grudgingly — in high school, and are probably included in the 100 preloaded free books that Kobo will have on it anyway. What I would like to see are new offerings by currently popular authors. Steven King was a pioneer in online books. I mean, iTunes offers a free download each week. This would really capture the imagination of e-readers. I also mentioned that the short covers website was difficult to navigate. I ended with an Ugh.

    Why would anybody remove my post?

  10. JeDi

    ahh, it seems taht during my rant, the post that i left yesterday re-appeared. The post tally increased from 11 to 12, and it is now visible…

    Clearly this website also has technical issues. Sorry about my rant.

    As websites offering ebooks increase, and the devices available to read them, more people will decide to download. The choices offered by Amazon’s website are not all that great though.

    download link is broken!! when it comes back can i post it on my site for getting ebooks free? if not thats ok!

    I have been reading ebooks for years. I have found them convenient for those times when stuck waiting for appointments, long lines etc. I have one question about short covers. Why are they charging more than I would pay for a paperback for an electronic book that has no real costs other than paying authors. Am I paying for paper and glue that isn’t used?

    Excellent beat ! I would like to apprentice while you amend your website, how could i subscribe for a blog website? The account helped me a acceptable deal. I had been a little bit acquainted of this your broadcast provided bright clear concept
