I have been reading ebooks for years. I have found them convenient for those times when stuck waiting for appointments, long lines etc. I have one question about short covers. Why are they charging more than I would pay for a paperback for an electronic book that has no real costs other than paying authors. Am I paying for paper and glue that isn’t used?

As websites offering ebooks increase, and the devices available to read them, more people will decide to download. The choices offered by Amazon’s website are not all that great though.

It’s odd that the comment that I left yesterday and saw posted has been removed by today (May 6). What I said was along the lines of agreement with the post by Lisa Kirwain above (Nov 18) that the free books are of the sort of ‘classics’ that we had to read — grudgingly — in high school, and are probably included in the 100 preloaded free books that Kobo will have on it anyway. What I would like to see are new offerings by currently popular authors. Steven King was a pioneer in online books. I mean, iTunes offers a free download each week. This would really capture the imagination of e-readers. I also mentioned that the short covers website was difficult to navigate. I ended with an Ugh.

Why would anybody remove my post?

I looked at the free books section. Looks like a lot or all of these will be pre-loaded on the Kobo anyways, so ya, hard to be enthused about these ‘classics’ which most people read because they were required to in school. Where’s the popular stuff? New titles? Surely a deal could have been worked out to release some current author’s work for free download? iTunes does it with their weekly free downloads.

Also, I throw my comments behind anybody who is complaining about the ease of use on Shortcovers. ugh!

Just a heads-up — the Shortcovers website is completely separate from Chapters, which means you *can not* use Chapters gift certificates at Shortcovers.

I received a Sony Ereader for my birthday, and my mom gave me $75 worth of Chapters gift cards to fill it with e-books. I couldn’t figure out how to redeem them until customer service told me that they didn’t actually accept them at Shortcovers.

Plus the Shortcovers website is dreadful — trying to browse anything is hopeless.

Sorry, hard to be enthused about this. All the “free” books on their list are old enough to be out of copyright and at least the one I chose, is just a link to web pages of the book, and not actual ebooks that you download to read off-line. All of this stuff has been available for years through the gutenburg site, and it looks like that is the source for these books that chapters is making hoopla about providing.
