Chapters-Indigo: Changes Coming To Plum Rewards in September

Announcements

plum

Do you have a Plum Rewards card from Chapters-Indigo?  There are some changes coming to the loyalty program next month.

  • Members will earn 5 points per dollar spent (down from the current 10 points)
  • Online member pricing will become part of everyday low pricing available to all indigo.ca customers – no Plum Rewards account needed
  • Members will be able to earn and redeem their points in-store, online and through the mobile app
  • Quarterly bonus events (the first one will be 10x plum points when you spend $30+ on Sept 10 – 13, 2015)
  • Members will be sent extra bonus points offers throughout the year

I find I spend much less on books since getting an eReader but these changes will see me buy from Amazon etc more.  It already took quite a while to save up points for even a small redemption.  The redemption levels are not changing at this time and will remain:

  • 2,500 points = $5
  • 4,500 points = $10
  • 8,500 points = $20
  • 20,000 points = $50
  • 35,000 points = $100

i understand there will be more opportunity to earn pts. indigo.ca is already competitve with amazon, especially with free shipping, and now you earn pts online as well! i would think you would want to support canadian rather than an american supergiant machine

Their prices are typically higher, so they are not always competitive. The tiny number of points does not make up for that

I seldom purchase at Chapters and thus it takes forever for me to earn Plum points. Now it will be even worse. I for one will go wherever it’s cheaper to buy the exact same books, whether that be an American or Canadian retailer.

Chapters Indigo in itself is a “supergiant machine” that has virtually monopolized retail book sales in Canada and has shuttered many independent booksellers. As such monopolies tend to do, they strongly opposed competition in the form of Amazon coming into Canada, and I’m SO glad that didn’t work out for them. I love Amazon. Consumers need choice and competition is a good thing!

I pay the same price for books at chapters or at amazon, and get free shipping at book, but at chapters I earn airmiles, which I do not at amazon. Plus indigo occasionally has an airmiles promotion where you can earn bonus airmiles or an additional discount. So chapters is the best deal, and that incoludes US booksellers, which charge exchange and shipping to Canada. Many also charge GST on top of everything else, like barnes & noble.

I totally agree that competition is good, but it happens that chapters is the best deal on books every time.

Buying the number of mangas I buy every trip I take to Chapters I will enjoy the x10 plum points a lot. I wish it was more often (even though we just had one event)….. I went from 3000 points to 11000 points in two weeks. I just want to get to the 35000 points asap so that I can enjoy getting 9 manga for free 🙂
