Costco To Stop Accepting American Express December 31st

Do you have a Costco American Express credit card?  Costco has decided to part ways with American Express after a breakdown in negotiations between the two companies and after December 31st will not accept any Amex cards in their stores.

Costco will still be offering a credit card and has signed a new agreement with Capital One.  The Capital One Platinum MasterCard will serve as both a credit card and a Costco membership card and this change means that Costco will accept all Mastercard credit cards in their stores – not just Costco branded cards,

Notifications are being sent to Costco Amex cardholders to inform them of the changes to their account but details have not been released but personally I would cu back on using the card for rebates.

If you have questions concerning the American Express Costco TrueEarnings Credit Card Program or the American Express Costco Platinum Cash Rebate Card Program, contact their Customer Service at 1-800-463-3783.

Hopefully they will honor the cash back we accumulated up and until Dec 31st, 2014.

Personally I don’t really care about Amex! Had to lodge a complaint to make they pay me back for interests they charged me illegally. Happy to see them going. Hoefully Capital One will do better!

I hear this is for Canada only. Can anyone verify? I’d love to get rid of my American Express card, but I shop at US Costco often.

  3. Visa says:

Why can’t Costco just accept regular visa/MC like everybody else?

Thank you for the notice! I’ve been considering switching credit cards anyway, and this may be just the trigger I needed. I’d like Costco to at least do their customers the courtesy of formally notifying us first…I assume that will come within the next month or so.

I have the capital one aspire travel and it’s great for us..unlike air miles which takes forever to get poimts(unless you live near a Safeway) anyways, we’ve only had it for a year and we have already recieved 3 flights, unlike air miles you don’t have to go on certain dates, pay what they want you to pay, get bumped if the flight is full..with the capital one card you book your flight the cheapest you find, you go anytime then they deduct the amount..you also get cancellation insurance and travel insurance free when you pay your trip with their card..Sorry I went on and on, but I love this card very easy to get points,

I wonder if Costco will reissue membership cards to the Amex holders then? I got rid of my old card when I got the Costco Amex……….I will be cancelling the Amex also, I only got it for convenience when at Costco

Hopefully someone with a card gets their notice soon and we can find out. With completely separate terms, I am not sure they can just re-issue a card as you may have personal issues with Capital One or already hold a card with them that has as much credit as they personally want to allow

Oh I actually meant the Costco membership card itself……….I got rid of mine when I got the Amex Costco card. I would assume everyone would have to apply on their own for the Capital One card. I already ahve a Mastercard so I’m good 🙂

That a major merchant can “force” the masses to HAVE to change due to their interests is just unbelievable. AND we have to pay to shop there!!? Unreal.

My dad shops at Costco I don’t really know why they do that? This is weird!

  9. minimusiclover says:

I just got back from my local costco and they’re accepting mastercard now! I don’t have an amex card so I was able to use my mastercard instead of my debit today! 🙂

I am so glad to hear that Costco is not signing with AMEX. AMEX takes away employees Civil rights by having EMPLOYEE FORCED ARBITRATION. Taking away the employee’s rights to sue the company for illegal behavior. I applaud Costco for not signing. Laws that protect employees against discrimination based on age, sex, religion, race, disability, and unequal pay for equal work, such as the Civil Rights Act and the Equal Pay Act. But these laws are meaningless if unenforceable in court. #COSTCOISGREAT
