Lol Sandra the point of some peoples comments are that their are a ton of counterfeits and these counterfeiters fake everything from mouthwash to knock off bags and you have to be careful.

Oh my god, if you people are wasting time discussing the fact that you need to buy your eye makeup from a reputable dealer, there is seriously something lacking in your life.

The ones at dollarama are exactly the same and if you think otherwise you really have no business adding comments on this website as you are making us looking like fools !

I recently bought REACH brand toothbrushes from a dollar store. The packaging looked good, so I thought it was legit. About a month later, I opened up the package to use it and my first thought was that it somehow didn’t feel right. The plastic seemed different, the weight was off somehow. But I looked at it closely and decided that it was probably okay. I used it about 5–6 times and then the head of the toothbrush broke right off. I am sure that it was not an authentic REACH toothbrush. I have never had a toothbrush snap suddenly like that.

I think most things at the dollar store are okay, but I do know that there are tons of counterfeit goods entering the system and there is no way for the authorities to monitor everything. The dollar stores themselves may not know that the products are counterfeit and may be acting in good faith.

I’ve learned to closely scrutinize things and look at the packaging and product very closely with a critical eye. If I were to come across the same toothbrush today, I think I would know because of the experience I had.

I agree with thepixie. Those types of things happen even with big companies. And some of those big companies can’t seem to get their acts together because serious problems have occurred more than once with some of them. There have been serious problems with some of the companies that manufacture baby products in the past few years but everyone still buys baby bottles, car seats, etc from those companies. And with food one particular company in Canada comes to mind as having had serious health issues in the past few years and apparently problems still continue within their plants. It’s a manufacturer’s issue, not the retailer that sells the product. If we feel unsafe about using a product it’s an issue with the manufacturer, not the retailer. Inform yourself about the products and stop blaming the retailers who carry them.

@ Diana — those kinds of things happen regardless of where you buy the item. Buying the same mascara from SDM or LD does not guarantee you a “safe” product. That’s all I meant.

That having been said, I don’t particularly care for any P&G products, or anything made by the larger consumer brands, because of safety concerns I have with those companies. All I’m trying to say is that consumers should be vigilant and informed regardless of where they’re buying products — whether from a ‘reputable’ company or a bargain store.

I found a hardcover cookbook that was based on the HBO Series The Sopranos. It was clearly a licensed item because it included pictures from the show and the woman who plays Carmella on the cover. It was $2. My husband’s a big Sopranos fan, so he was very excited!

I’d have to disagree with you Pixie.

Remember the fake “Colgate” toothpaste sold in dollar stores that had antifreeze and other toxins. I wouldn’t want to risk using counterfeit toxic mascara just to save a couple bucks. Would you?

As long as the product hasn’t expired, it should be fine. Dollarama has to comply with the same product safety regulations as the rest of the world; most of the brand name products they stock are just discounted because they have an older version of packaging (like bottles of Got2be and Sunsilk that many Dollarama stores currently carry) or because there were slight defects in printing or applying the label/packaging. There shouldn’t be anything to worry about as long as you follow the same precautions you would follow if buying it from SDM, etc.
