Future Shop has an interesting promo going on right now.  They are calling it “Flip Your Tech” and giving away gift cards.  What you have to do is bring your old cell phones or iPods to your Future Shop and they will give you a Gift Card for the current value of that phone or iPod.  It doesn’t matter if the item is damaged either.  And if your tech item has a $0 value, they will recycle it for you and plant a tree in your name.  Even the environment wins with this deal!  The gift card can be used in store or online.

by giving you the current value of that item…do they mean the current price to buy it new?? or the current “used” price of it?? just wondering, i havent taken part in this before and have a few items to get rid of
    thanks

I would like to know that too. I have a Samsung Galaxy laying under my bed!

Hi, I just called my local Futureshop. If it doesn’t work they plant a tree for the environment in your name. If they can salavage it for parts like an Iphone you might get like $20.00. I asked about a Samsung phone that is in the box and works they won’t give any money for it. And my Blackberry from last year has the value of $13.00. I am going to trade on craigslist personally.

Sweet, I have an old cell phone and I am gonna be buying a TV at futureshop soon! score!

Sure, you’re going to get nothing or practically nothing for it … but it’s better than sitting useless in a drawer or ending up in a landfill. If you can resell it on kijiji or elsewhere, go for it; that’s recycling too.

fyi blackberry 7750 is worth nothing. they are willing to recycle it however… the ones on ebay are going for $10-$20 eh

I’m planning to take part even though I doubt I’ll get anything. If I do get something, it’s a bonus, otherwise I was planning to recycle them anyway as they’re older and probably not worth much.

I brought two HTC phones in… one was from Telus and the other from Bell (apparently the carrier makes a difference). Got $16 for one and $10 for the other. Also had a couple other really old phones — I knew I wasn’t getting money back for those but may as well recycle them instead of letting them sit in my drawer!

beeree was right, definitely was NOT worth my time! You should be able to check on line, feels like a “trick” just to get you into their store in hopes you will buy something else. When I found out mine was worth nothing I told them I would keep it because I didn’t need a tree that bad!

Just got back from Future Shop and I got rid of 12 cell phones that have been collecting dust in my drawer for many years!! Got a $58.77 GC for 3 broken blackberrys and one pay-as-you-go Fido. Super excited (and I didnt buy anything in store because the GC never expires!!) I think it is a wonderful program!!

If it’s sitting useless in a drawer, an old phone will go a lot further being donated to any number of good charities that take them. Many women’s shelters, for example, take old phones to be distributed to families in dire situations. It’s a far better deal for all involved than futureshop planting a tree.

I took in 5 phones, didn’t get a penny, wasted about a half an hour while they looked them all up to see what they were worth. All of them were old but still in working condition. But they did give me the name of a store in Edmonton that may buy them from me for parts. Cellular Toy Shop.

I tried to return an old cell phone (Nokia) yesterday May 27th.at Future Shop in Kanata, and wasted 1 hour while sales ladies tried to look busy in avoiding my request. Finally, because of my patience, one of the two ladies came to me with the verdict that it was worth $0.00, but she guaranteed that they would recycle it in the proper manner. There was no mention of their part about planting a tree anywhere on this planet nor did she ever asked my name, since the ad showed that a tree would be planted in the name of the customer returning the old tech.
What a gimmick, and what a waste of time. Kept the phone in trying another Future Shop in the Ottawa area.
