Well, dud for me too! I followed my own rules and the needles fall like crazy. I am so mad, I almost want to put up my plastic one...
It doesn't even smell in the house like a fresh tree!!!
Sucks big time!

Thanks for the advice Ditto, I followed it however many of the needles are falling on a daily basis. I'm quite sad as I wonder if it will last until Xmas. Any ideas on how STOP the needles from falling? I don't want a bald dry tree. BTW, I make sure the tree has sufficient water on a daily basis. Please help!!!

Never again will I get an Ikea tree. Ruined my christmas.

We got one from the North York location but I must've picked a dud. Even though I cut about 4 inches off the bottom after I got, it's stopped drinking for days and is drying out fast! The top of the tree is already browning and shedding and it's only been a week! Don't think there will be many needles left by Dec 25th. Very disappointing.

You need to buy a saw (quite cheap at Canadian Tire)- as soon as you cut it, put it in water. There is a green liquid for trees (still canadian Tire) mix it and it will help you tree.
Not too early to buy, but do the check that I've described above.
And don't cut unless you put in water!

Hello Everyone,
this is my first year buying a real christmas tree and I'm very excited and also nervous that I don't kill it prematurely. It is Nov 30th today, is it too early to buy the tree? Should I wait until next week? I'd love some advice as I'd like the tree to last until New years! Also how do I cut off the bottom stump to lengthen his life without a saw?

The trick is to check how fresh it is before you buy it - bend the branch and if it returns easily to it's form, it is fresh. If it breaks, it is old and don't bother.
I've got mine from there for the last 3 years and I was happy. Always cut few inches and then put it water. Mine lasted from Dec 11 till Jan 7 and it still looked great!
It is a good deal, the only disadvatange, you cannot see it open before you buy it...

Will buy one this year again and promptly take the shears to it to decorate the front of the house. If needles fall off, they are outdoors! I can make 4 bundles for $20 bucks and that's good value!

I bought my tree in Burlington and it was a big disappointment. My son sawed through the trunk like butter and as soon as we opened the covering on the trees it was needles everywhere. We put it in the house in the holder and thought perhaps a day in the water and things will be better....nope. Not a drop went in the tree and the needles dropped if you brushed the tree. DANGEROUS. Put it outside and cut a tree locally. No more Ikea trees for us.

I've been buying my trees at Ikea for the last few years and have always been very pleased with them. Don't add sugar to the water, it grows bacteria. Buy a product called Tree Fresh at the garden center or Home Depot or Canadian Tire. You just add a capful to a litre of water. you can use it in fresh floral bouquets too through the year.

Ikea trees are fron out east and are harvested way to early, sure it's a great deal but you get what you pay for. Instead of supporting an international company you should be supporting the hard workers of Ontario tree.

The trick is to cut off half an inch out of the bottom part of the tree and put it in water right away. this is because the tree after cut creates a barrier which doesnt allow the tree to consumes the water needed.

you know guys and gals, a little tip for ya.....
put the tree in a bucket of water while it's waiting to be set up. Pour some Rose food in there, or sugar. The tree will last and not shed!

Wish I could withdraw my comment. I gave the tree a real good shake and swept up all the needles and it might be ok after all. Sorry I spoke in haste. Please remove the comment if possible.

Just put up my ikea tree bought today. It's dropping needles like crazy and is dry as a bone. It's a big fire hazard. What a rip off. Im taking it back tomorrow and demanding my money back.

Bought an Ikea Christmas tree 6 days ago. The pos is now sitting on my porch waiting for the dump. I don't know when this thing was harvested but it was dry as bones and shedding too much to be worthwhile. You can buy a fresh tree for under 20 bucks from the Scouts, I've learned my lesson...
