National do not call registry is now available!

Posted by & filed under Canadian Deals & Coupons.

It’s been in the work for sometime, but as of today you can now register on the ‘do not call’ list with your phone number to stop those dinner time telemarketing calls.

I’m estatic. I’m so tired of having a horn blow in my ear, with my captain speaking, the youv’e been approved for ”credit card” were calling about your ”‘credit card” calls.

The site is super swamped today but click here to register you might have to keep trying or go back another day since I highly suspect there getting a large amount of Canadians signing up (Which they honestly should of been prepared for lol!)

I really hope this does weed out the 20 calls I average a week from telemarketers. I’ve been signed up with the CMA’s do not call list for years, but it really didn’t do too much, maybe weeded out a few but not many.

I don’t mind doing survey’s and such but 9 times out of 10 it’s for a ‘free cruise’ or phishing for my SIN number and personal info.

Hope everyone that wants to sign up gets in today!

Edited to add:

You can also call 1–866-580-DNCL (1–866-580‑3625) or by TTY at 1–888-DNCL TTY (1–888-362‑5889). You must be calling from the number you wish to register

Thanks to Sc’ers for posting this on the forum

This has been posted both in the tea room and the new and hot freebies section. Should they be merged?

Thanks for the reminder. Looks like they’ve put up a “give our poor melting webserver some mercy” page, but I’ll flag this to check it out when the site’s online again.

Furthermore, could they have picked a more obscure URL? Why not something like “donotcall.ca” and the French equivalent?

  3. Cheripou

I’ve been trying since early this morning to put my phone number on the “Do not call list” but I keep getting this message: The service is not available. Please try again later.

I’m not quiting, I’ll try again later :)

    Me Too

Very busy. But, I am sure it will work and when it does I hope those irritating calls will no longer come through.

  5. Sally

I got in this morning just before I wrote the post, then it went down :(

Yes Dizzy they will be merged.

  6. Steve

First off, why the hell do you have to register every 3 years for this service. Stupid lobbyist actually pressured the government that we might change our minds after 3 years? If anyone finds out who the people are who are stupid enough to buy something over the phone from telescum, punch them in the face twice from me. While you’re at it, people who actually buy stuff from a pop up add. Secondly, you can get through to the website with persistence, but check this out. You go on the site if you can, then you have to choose eng or french, then you have to click register my #, then you have to enter your #. Then you have to enter the swirly image thingy with a confirmation code , only to find out that the image doesn’t come up because there is an error. Nice to see that the Government hires only the best I.T. people. But what do you expect from government employees…I think they hired public school teachers to build this site.

  7. Sally

I think you have to re register every three years because so many people move around, get new phone numbers etc, and for the ”off” chance Bob who gets assigned Bill’s old number wants to recieve the calls he won’t because Bill had signed up on the registry.

I pulled this info from a Sympatico.msn site:

How to put your number on the do-not-call list
You can add your number to the DNCL either online at http://www.LNNTE-DNCL.gc.ca or by calling 1–866-580-DNCL (3625)”

The 1–866 number is busy too but at least there are 2 ways of trying to get through.

  9. Dizzy

Thank you Sally, I greatly appreciate it. It is much easier to find what you are looking for if it is all in one place. Plus, reading other people’s responses and what happens is very useful, but a pain when having to look in multiple locations for it.

    Thanks again.

Gosh, what were they one silly drugs not expecting this to be so busy? Why is this a surprise to them?

”The CRTC says about 200,000 people had registered for the service by about 9 a.m. Tuesday. The site and hotline were activated at 12:01 a.m.

We are victims of our own success,” CRTC spokesperson Denis Carmel told CTV.ca. “At one point, 18,000 tried to get through at the same moment. If you would have told me these numbers yesterday, I would have laughed. It’s phenomenal.”

By 8 a.m., the site had crashed because of the sheer number of people trying to sign on, said Carmel.”

Heres the rest of the article

hubby got us registered first thing this morning.
I had gotten to where i was just cussing at these idiots who would call at like friggin 9pm.
the funny thing is that Bell, my home phone service provider, uses telemarketing and technical support in india, and altho i have been telling Bell to stop telarketing to me for about a year and a half, the company they pay to harrass their own existing customers won’t stop calling me at all hours of the day. the registry won’t help me with this because i have an existing relationship with Bell. too bad it’s a sucky one!

  12. Annoyed reader

Great. Hope it works, but you should proof-read what you write before posting it. It’s horrible to read.

Its been in the work for -> It’s been in the work for

    estatic -> ecstatic

the youv’e been approved for ”credit card” were calling about your ”’credit card” calls -> the you’ve been approved for ”credit card” calls (It’s rather hard to make sense of this sentence, actually)

highly suspect there getting -> highly suspect they’re getting

a large amount of Canadian’s signing up (Which they honestly should of been prepared for lol!) -> a large amount of Canadians signing up (Which they honestly should have been prepared for lol!) ——- This is a big run-on sentence too, it really needs to be split up.

don’t mind doing survey’s and such but 9 times out of 10 its for a ‘free cruise’ or phising -> don’t mind doing surveys and such but 9 times out of 10 it’s for a ‘free cruise’ or phishing

  13. Boo Radley

Annoyed reader, thank you for your feedback. We try doing our best to keep our readers updated about the most recent deals and freebies. At the same time, we have our personal lives and chores that we have to attend to. I for instance am a graduate student at Queen’s and give school my top priority. Sally too has a daily job and other personal commitments. As a result, it’s not always possible to invest as much time fool-proofing posts as we’d like to.

Advertising on SmartCanucks is very limited and almost non-existent (except for the small Google ads strip at the top) and all our blog posts are very honest and intended to be as useful and practical as possible. Therefore SmartCanucks is not financially rewarding as it may seem.

However I do appreciate the time you took providing feedback and we do think that proper English is crucial especially with a blog as popular as SmartCanucks.ca.

  14. Sally

I personally don’t appreciate it. It shows no kuth to post something like that. Please go through the other 1000 posts and point out all errors as well because there tons. Last time I checked I wasn’t paid hundreds of dollars to post on the blog.

In fact, english was my best language all throughout my years in school. I’m a lazy typer, in fact quite often I don’t punctuate at all because I didn’t realize I was writing a test. I also don’t rely on spell checkers at all… ever… period.

So sorry if I’m not perfect enough for you, thanks for pointing it out and maybe you ”Annoyed reader” can pay for me to further my edumatcatien as well.

I try my best, sometimes I’m rushed and don’t have time to re read my posts 5 times and pick out any errors. I’m sorry.

  15. SuperstarIgnavious

I personally love her posts, she or he is fun and witty.
It is rude to point out errors to feel superior on a blog. I’m not sure if you just got graded poorly on a test or what your circumstances are but it is ridiculous to find this disccusion over a do not call registry.

  16. nsangel

I had already registered with the voluntary do not call list. which was as you can imagine, limited capability. only affected those companies that agreed not to call.

so i’m glad the gov’t has taken a stand against telemarketers. I signed up all of my phone numbers and my mother.

Thanks for the feedback re the 3 year renewal sally. that makes sense. in 3 years you may not have the same number. could be a problem if “bob” that gets your old number likes the company telemarketers provide. LOL.

Now if they would do something about the flyers. not the coupons just the flyers. most ppl can get them online, so why can’t the ppl that don’t want to waste a forrest be excempt from these as well?

*sigh* progress is slow, but it is progress.

  17. Adam

Definitely a grammar-snob in the midst, I am the same way ALTHOUGH I don’t go out of my way to mention it unless it is absolutely necessary!

    Thanks for the great post!

  18. snoop

95% of the “telemarketing calls” we get are from charities. They are exempt under this scheme. I was puzzled as to why newspaper subscriptions was also exempt. I mean, they are selling a product much like carpet cleaners, time-shares or cruises.

I do agree with the exemptio for existing business relationships. It’s a fundamental must that in order for a business to be successful, they should follow up with clientele on a regular basis.

  19. babitos

Hi everybody,Since I changed my number 4 months ago I keep getting faxes. The worst part is that they come at all hours of the day and night.Do you think this list will help me? Beeeeep! :)

  20. Private Pbxer

Just go VoIP and get a number from a small provider that doesn’t publish in White Pages. They won’t find you, and if someone will — there’s blacklist feature for this rare case. No need to register anywhere.

  21. ndncl subscriber

the website should’ve put up some ads with all that traffic.… imagine the $$$ that would’ve rolled in :D

  22. Mel

This isn’t going to change much. It will only minimize the calls. Everytime you fill out one of those contest ballots in the mall or some other contest, your info is sold to a third party who then sells them or uses them as sales leads. The best and only way is to say ” I am not intetrested”

  23. Steed Snuggerud

When you begin to have a look for methods to speed up your personal computer and optimize it’s performance, you will come across the choice of using a registry cleaner, and with these programs comes many options as well. Maybe you are searching for freeware or perhaps you are OK with spending a few bucks to get a quality product, but first you simply need to learn how to choose the top registry cleaner software for your needs. That’s what we are going to discuss in this piece, we are going to go over the features that you should be looking for when choosing a registry cleaning application. Click for more information.

  24. windows repair software

The issue gets worse when it becomes nearly impossible to find a trustworthy source of information on registry cleaner software. The problem lies in the explosion of spam-review sites which are nothing more than websites promoting affiliate links under the guise of an official “review” site. There main goal is to accomplish one thing, to send you to the site they are promoting and hoping you buy the product they are selling. if you do, they get up to a 80% cut of the sale. In other words, their reviews are up for sale, and are nothing buy thinly vailed sales pitches. For example, if you do a search for the term “Paid Survey” or “Registry Repair” you’ll notice that the paid listings all include sites that say “read our review” or “warning, don’t download anything until you read this…” etc

  25. Curtis

what’s wrong with an occasional “i love it” if you do..and if there is nothing more to say about the design..and it also sais a lot about the person who is commenting. (maybe he or she has nothing more tos ay about it than than,..or has a very limited vocabulary)

  26. talented young artist

That is very interesting, You are a very skilled blogger. I have joined your feed and stay up for in search of extra of your wonderful post. Also, I have shared your website in my social networks
