Pepsi just released the new Pepsi Next in Canada!  Naturally Sweetened with Sugar and Stevia Extract. Pepsi Next does not contain the artificial sweetener aspartame.

Stevia is a plant originally from South America. Its leaves hold the key to the perfect taste and fewer calories found in Pepsi NEXT. After harvesting and steeping the leaves, water and impurities are filtered out leaving behind stevia extract, which is then crystalized. This extract is 200-300 times sweeter than sugar with zero calories.

There are mixed reactions towards Stevia in general and some controversy surrounding it. Some people believe it may be a carcinogen although this has not been officially proven.

It’s good to see Pepsi transition towards more natural products. Maybe Pepsi Next is not all 100% natural yet but this looks like a great step in the right direction.

For some reason, the pop name is bringing back memories of the Spice Girl ads for “Generation Next” Pepsi! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4GR0Zv0hm0
Wish Pepsi went with just stevia, so friends who drink diet pop can drink it without worrying over the sugar content (I love Pepsi Throwback, which contains sugar, not corn syrup).

I love the pepsi throwback too. hard to find it. I have to avoid aspartame as it gives me migraines. the stevia sounds interesting.

How nice that you post a review of a new product. The can looks beautiful. I’m very interested in trying it!

I hope they’d have a caffeine free version, insomnia and iron deficiency. Sometimes I’m embarrassed to say that I prefer caffeine-free diet lime Pepsi. What a diva, right? lol

  4. Lisa says:

It’s interesting that the US version has 60% less sugar while the Canadian one contains 30%, however both maintain the ‘same great taste’ according to the website. Why not bring the 60% less sugar one to Canada? I agree that I would love to see options for those friends and family members who are very concerned with the number of calories rather than overall nutrition, which do not contain aspartame. Trying to convince them to give up their mulitple diet pepsi a day diet is nearly impossible so at least this would be a slightly better option.

The 60% less version in the US contains aspartame, acesulfame potassium and sucralose.

Won’t be buying this one. Sugar is sugar and will rot your teeth, especially in a highly acidic medium like cola. It would be nice if they offered a pure Stevia Extract option.

Aspartame and all the other fake sugars (even the so-called natural ones, like splenda and stevia) make me extremely sick, even after only a teaspoon of something containing it. They don’t help you loose weight. They are worse for your heath than sugar is. Just have REAL sugar in SMALL amounts.

  7. MeMe says:

At least the Canadian one has real sugar like Throwback and no HFCS. And the US one has Aspartame so I’m glad they didn’t go that route either. Can’t wait to try it!

  8. It’s really a very valuable piece of facts. I’m grateful which you contributed this useful details about. Make sure you continue to be us up to date like this. Many thanks discussing.

  9. Schultz says:

I can’t find Throwback anymore, so I decided to try this one as it doesn’t contain HFCS, and was disappointed. It’s drinkable but has a funny aftertaste. I have reverted back to the glass bottled Pepsi, which is made without HFCS and tastes amazing, but is unfortunately expensive. If only Pepsi Throwback came back…

HFCS contains lots of unhydrolyzed starch, and actually has many times more calories than what the label lists.
