No Frills Canada: Changes to Price Matching Policy Being Tested in London, Ontario

Announcements, Canadian Blogs

NF-Markham-1

There are some unfortunate changes to No Frills Canada’s price matching policies being tested out in London, Ontario right now. As of October 23, 2015, shoppers in London, Ontario are now only able to price match items featured in No Frills’ weekly flyer.

Currently, most Canadian shoppers can price match just about anything in store when you bring in a flyer or receipt of a cheaper item from one of No Frills’ major supermarket competitors within this store’s geographical trade area. This new pilot project is restricting this offer even more and limiting shoppers to price matching only the items featured in No Frills’ flyer. You can already view the different policies online when setting your store location as you will see a different price matching policy on the bottom of the home page for London as compared to other cities.

As of right now, this is pilot project being tested out in London, ON, but depending on how this new policy tests, shoppers could see some changes to No Frills “We Won’t be Beat” policy.

There’s no word yet as to when or if this policy will roll out nationwide.

I think it’s perfectly reasonable for Nofrills to adopt a new policy if they so choose. They get to decide how they run their business and if their customers don’t like it, they are free to shop somewhere else. Luckily, most people don’t try to price match. One very annoying thing is to be behind someone who has 10 flyers spread out over the counter and the cashier trying to price match 30 items. It’s frustrating for other customers and you can certainly see it on the facial expressions of the other shoppers in line behind them. Its a very slow process and a line up I would have never got in had I known I was behind a chronic price matcher. They need to move that to a customer service only line or something.

    • Jeremy says:

lol chronic price matcher…didn’t know it was so evil!

    • Katherine says:

I totally agree with you. Why should I, who is paying full price for an item be treated as an inferior customer? It makes no sense to me why price-matchers are given priority status. Last week I stood in line at walmart for over 20 minutes while the woman ahead had every flyer there was. Every item in her grocery cart (which was full) was a price match. These people should all be made to stand in their own line and if they stand all day, too bad!

      • Val says:

Since when does paying more than someone else make you superior? The last time I checked, people stand in line. When you get to the front of the line, it is your turn. Did the woman you are complaining about cut in line? Of course not. She took her place in line and waited like everyone else. why are you so special?

      • Christopher says:

Who said you are inferior, that is an emotion only you are surfacing.

      • chaks says:

It sounds like something is burning? just because you are lazy person or have no time to look for deals that doesn’t mean people who are a smartshoppers called chronic price matchers! You should be shopping at Sobeys or Metro or high ended grocery stores where all rich people do their shopping! Grape is sour!!

    • Tonja says:

Well did you ever stop to think how the price matchers feel? Probably not since your comment is very inconsiderate. Alot of work is put into so that we can feed our families the same way as you. Not all of us are fortunate enouph to simply shop without thinking and some of us are sick and working is not an option. Did you stop to think how embarrassing this may already be for us who have no choice? At least we are trying to continue to have some normalcy in our lives. So you need to wait if it’s that hard pick another line up! Stop being so high and mighty and start treating others in this position with a little respect they are doing the best that they can.

  3. Dana says:

Agreed – the only efficient way to do it – is to price match a few items using the Flipp Ap. Bringing in a stack of flyers is unfair to others and just plain crazy. Who has time for that

    • FallenPixels says:

Sadly, some No Frills stores are not mobile friendly due to people photoshopping their own sales into flyers so request paper flyers

  4. moe says:

Its not evil, its smart shopping.
We PM regularly but I guess our store has PM’s down as it doesn’t take much more than a few extra seconds.
if our local NO Frills stopped PM other local stores me & my wallet would certainly go to another store who did PM all.

BUT If this works for them in London other retailers may follow suit!

  5. Anna says:

Honestly, I coupon but I don’t price match. I just go to three or four stores every weekend and get what I need. This way I also get to their check out their clearance stuff. I don’t mind waiting behind price matchers and when I have a lot of coupons I “warn” those behind me…. I also don’t see how having to stand in line behind someone who is price matching is being treated as an inferior customer or how a price matcher is given priority status. That, to me, is just a ridiculous over exaggeration. If you are annoyed by being in that line, move to another one.

  6. sara says:

I pm regularly and get thanked for being efficient. I have my shopping list in order by store/page and place items in groups on the conveyor with the flyer with it. It drives me crazy when those in front of me are flipping through their flyers trying to find items or struggling with their app.

    • Val says:

Me too!! I got my list with all the items/pages sorted by store and items marked in reebee/flip for quick access. I even sort the items by the store I am price matching on the belt so it is nice and simple for all involved.

  7. Nan says:

I absolutely hate standing in line at the register behind shoppers who are price matching multiple items. I wish all stores would stop the process completely, and perhaps they would be able to lower their everyday prices for everybody – or at the very least open up cash desks for price matchers only, and let them all stand in line behind each other. 🙂

  8. MoochMom says:

I love price matching. I organize my cart with the flyers before we get in line. Why should I pay full price if a store offers to match a competitor’s price? The cashiers are trained and are efficient. It’s the only reason I don’t use self check-out, where there is seldom a line. I can’t imagine traveling to multiple stores to save a few dollars, and I usually buy more if I can spend the time at one store.

  9. Val says:

To those than believe price matching is the devil. Price matching saves my family about $100/week on average. An extra $5200 per year gives my family a couple vacations. What did you get?? Overpriced strawberries.

  10. Panache70 says:

This would be really bad news if they choose to implement. I would rather they limit the number of price matches to 10 per person rather than restrict the price matches to what is in their own flyer. Most of the stuff in the flyer is already on sale anyway. Most of the price matching comes from the stuff that is not in the flyer, but appears in a competitor’s flyer. I agree with others here, if you prepare properly and have your flyers or flipp app ready to go, it should all be done very quickly. I’ve seen people just throw their flyer on the belt and tell the cashier to look for the item to be price matched… that is horrible and should not be accepted. I could probably price match 10 items in less than a minute or two, and in turn save between 5$ to 10$ (more if there is meat involved). I really hope they do not do this.

  11. kerry says:

I shop at nofrills all the time, but rarely use the price matching policy.I usually forget to bring the other stores flyer with me,so I don’t care that much, and will continue to shop there…

  12. Sandra5 says:

I rarely price match more than a couple of items and this tends to be a very quick process with printed flyers in hand.
That said, I can understand the frustration of people in line behind people who price match many items: perhaps a limit of 3 price matches per customer may be a good compromise for both camps.
If they do implement this policy in Toronto, no problem, I will simply shop more at competitors who undercut No Frills prices.

  13. Sandra5 says:

I wanted to add that when I go to the effort to do price matching I consider that I am doing the retailer a huge favour. I am not spreading my disposable income to support their competitors.

  14. Christopher says:

NoFrills have become worse for price matching over the past two years, there are many decripencies to which NoFrills simply deny, as in, we don’t price match from this store, but we will price match from that store, if NoFrills wants to be so anal about price matching, they stop price matching, period.

Yes there are some who are not organized when price matching, that is a skill that they will, hopefully master, if they get a chance to master it considering, as mentioned anal NoFrills and other stores are becoming with Price Matching, if it all stops. If you don’t like standing behind someone who is trying to save money, go to another line, because you like to pay full price, not all of us do.

  15. Price matching exposes the company to lower their prices because obviously their prices are not low. No Frills and other stores give every rule in the book to not give you the price match. Ok i will go to Walmart or Food Basics instead of arguing with them. Times are tough every little helps.

  16. Scouponer says:

I price match every time I shop! I save so much money so to lose that would be difficult for my budget as we live on one retired pension. Sorry if people are inconvenienced, but I use flipp and have all my price match items organized together so it is pretty quick. for those who don’t want us price matching and have no problem paying higher prices, I recommend you shop at Loblaws where you won’t have to deal with us price matchers and you can really overpay for all your items. Last time I was there a 10lb bag of potatoes that was $1.99 at other stores was $5.99. What a rip! I am happy for those who are willing and able to pay full price for your groceries but if unforeseen circumstances happen to you like a job loss you may suddenly be happy to have the opportunity to price match your groceries and save hundreds if not $1000’s of dollars a year. Please don’t give us price matchers a hard time…everyone’s circumstances are different and not everyone is as fortunate as you

  17. AM says:

Sounds terrible. They already have a very unfavorable price matching policy. No quantities eg: 2/$5, per item limits, no longer matching stores they used to, if the other flyer says selection may vary they only do the one in the picture. This is taking it too far. Now the item has to be in No Frills and the competitors flyer. Lmao, how often would that happen? And if it is in both, then usually the same product is on sale in both flyers, and when this happens, the prices are usuat close. For all the people who don’t like price matching, not everyone has a vehicle that they can drive to 3-4 different stores. I do one shop at one store and take one cab home. Of course I am going to price match, I’m.not going to pay for cabs home from 3-4 different places. Just because something is inconvenient to you, doesn’t mean it isn’t a major help to others. A lot of people are selfish. Just because it’s not something you ‘want’ to do, doesn’t mean it’s not something other families ‘ need’ to do, due to their financial situation.

  18. Reid says:

I do most of my shopping at Real Canadian Super Store as they price match. Don’t know if they advertise it but I just asked them one day and they said yes.

The advantage to the store by offering to match prices is that you will buy all of your other stuff there too.

As to the people complaining about people matching prices, why don’t you do it too? I do hate the people that aren’t organized about it but if you are it doesn’t take much time. I know that I’ve saved at least $500 this year by doing it and I’m shopping for one.

  19. baggypants says:

My Superstore has put some controls on price matching (a list of stores and only 4 of each item) and I can live with those changes. Also, to keep everyone happy they have designated checkouts for price matching and it works well. So I know when I choose the price matching checkout, everyone in the line will be doing the same, so no huffing and puffing by line mates!!

  20. ilovecoupons23 says:

My brother-in-law works for Loblaws. They have people whose sole job is to research whether it is profitable or not for them to price match. They have a system that analyzes each and every transaction. That’s why they have the PC card to track your transactions and build a profile on you as a customer. What they have found is that a large majority of the price matching transactions are not profitable enough for them to justify the extra time it takes cashiers to change the price. I thought it was crazy how when I wanted to price match one item at No Frills they had to call over the customer service manager- it was like a big production. I felt like all the people in the line behind me were looking at me, since then I haven’t PM’d there. I think eventually all stores will end the Price Matching …at least that’s the way it is looking for Loblaws.

  21. adora says:

I actually hate price match quite a bit.

Most people aren’t prepared. Just last week at Fresh Co, this woman right before me was buying only 2 things. Didn’t start Googling until the cashier is ringing her items up. Then they have to argue about the flyers dates. She was trying to get the price that another store is offering the next day. Then she decided not getting it. Her 10 cent savings on cereal externalized to a 5-minute loss for the cashier, me and everyone after me.

Of course I do price match sometimes. If you can’t beat them, join them. But I adhere strongly to our etiquette here on SC blog community. Always do research and don’t ever make it difficult for other people.

In the grand scheme of things, I’d rather price match don’t exist. They should at least make it harder. Like it must be done afterwards at customer service. So if you think savings is worth your time, do it. But you wouldn’t waste other people’s time.

At the end of the day. The money is there. You think you’re saving money, but all the stores must raise their prices to cover their increased overhead.

    Price-match is overall It’s a lose-lose game.

  22. rocko says:

For those of you complaining about price match, suck it up and don’t be mad you didn’t think of saving money on that grocery trip. Those who price match do some because 1. the stores allow it 2. it saves money 3. its a all in one stop shop. walmart is the only retailer that does not limit quantities, does not limit stores to price match from. no frills used to be really good at this but slowly restrictions have been put in place, making it pointless. Half of the time No Frills takes products off the shelves because another competitor has sale items and does not want to take the cut. PM is beneficial and those who use it are just trying to save some time and some money. I have saved hundreds using PM over the years. I don’t care how long it is,maybe those complaining should choose another lane or try it once to see how good it feels to save money.

  23. Debbie says:

As I do not live in London, it was only by chance in Jan 2016, that I went into a No Frills in London and was rudely told by the cashier that they don’t price match anymore. I said other No Frills do and she said not in London, and she advised me to go to Walmart as they still price match. This was rude awakening for me but I did go to Walmart and they were happy for the business. While still in the No Frills parking lot, I had chance to talk to other customers who were not happy about London No Frills stopping the price match and they added this No Frills has raised its prices and in thinking back I realized they are pricier than other stores.
