Roy, I thought the same as you until buying one for Christmas. The improvement in video quality is noticeable not only in blu-ray discs but the old dvd's as well. (As long as you have a high definition tv). The big change in viewing experience for us is connection to the internet through the blu ray player. We can now watch tv through the internet. There's utube, netflix, etc plus lots of free movies to watch. It also is connected through the home network, to our two other computers so we watch movies and listen to music from the hard drives. I'm not explaining it all very well, but there are a LOT of benefits to getting yourself a Blu ray. It's not just for playing blu rays.

Can someone please explain to me why I should buy a Blue Ray? I'm perhaps out of the loop, but I've never felt the need to trade my dvd player in for a blue ray. What are the benefits, how will it change my viewing experience? Is is worth it? I appreciate any info you can provide.
