Stretch Mark Creams: Do they work?

Other / Canada

stretchmark1.jpgAs many of our long time readers know, last summer my wife gave birth to our second daughter. Parenting has been a heck of a lot of fun, but that doesn’t mean my wife hasn’t had a few physical hurdles to overcome. For all the blessings motherhood brings, pregnancy can put a real strain on the body. And one of the biggest obstacles that most new mothers have in common? Stretch marks.

Stretch mark creams are available on the market, but not all of them meet with much success. That’s why I thought I’d pass a link along to Diva’s Skin Care Blog. In an effort to help her clients prevent stretch marks (she works in a salon/spa) Diva conducted tests with four different brands of stretch mark cream on a number of different women and met with varying degrees of success.

This may not be Canadian and it may not be a freebie, but I know a lot of our readers are mom’s to little ones, and if you’re concerned with any lingering stretch marks left by having a little one in your tummy, hopefully this post can help point you in the right direction. Speaking of which — do any of you have any experience with creams or methods of stretch mark removal that you’d like to share?

Here is a good article on stretch marks, what they are and what you can do about them.

While I was pregnant I used baby oil EVERYDAY after my morning shower from my shoulders to my knees( front & back ) while I was still wet. I didn’t get one stretchmark. My mother had been cursed with an awful amount of them so I thought I had to do something to try and PREVENT them.I passed my secret on to my sister in law and she didn’t get any either!

  3. Arch_Dandy says:

Forget motherhood, pshh. I have them all over my thighs and I am only 19 with no children. I would really love a way to get rid of them or atleast make them less visible, I dont ever wear bathing suits in public because of them. Im not overweight either, I just used to be really skinny and then I gained a bit of weight and bam they just appeared. I hate them.

  4. Gilly says:

I tried EVERYTHING when I was pregnant. Every home “Cure” and every store bought one. No one else in my family has stretch marks, but I have very “unelastic” skin. I only gained 15 lbs with pregnancy (And was in terrific shape), and I still got terrible stretch marks. Maybe they DO work for some people… but, then, I know a lot of women that used NOTHING, and they didn’t get stretch marks. I think it really depends on the person and skin type:) That picture up there is NOTHING compared to my stomach and sides…. Heck, I would take THAT any day! Luckily, they don’t stay that bright red- but although always noticeable, I figure it’s an alright price to pay for my wonderful amazing little girl:)

I dont have a single stretch mark on my tummy or my thighs, chest. I used the Palmers coca butter cream and it worked wonders.. Every night before bed, in the morning and randomly throughout the day.. Was nice time spent with baby in my belly too.. IT WORKS —-

  6. willowsprite says:

I used Palmers Cocoa Butter stretch mark lotion too, plus plenty of other natural oils. It didn’t work…my belly is plastered with ugly stretch marks. It all depends on what your skin is like. Some women have nice stretchy skin, and some don’t! I won’t ever wear a two-piece swimsuit again, but I have a beautiful son to show for my “baby belly.”

  7. brian says:

I am a pharmacists. No cream actually worked for those streches. Some does with long term treatment 6 months-year, but they only recude the appearance. Impossible to eliminate unless plastic laser chirurgy (even that will not eleminate entirely), which is of course not recommanded due to the ratio benefits/risks. What you can do is to prevent it by moisturing skin.

Too bad our humain body is far from perfect.

  8. syunismile says:

I had stretch marks on the inner thighs after 40-50 lbs weight gain but afterwards I lost 15-20 lbs, kept that weight and lost the stretch marks within half a year. I didn’t use creams. (I didn’t even know they were called stretch marks at the time… they just looked like grey squiggly lines with a slight indentation)

But Avon has cellulite and stretch mark creams that are pretty cheap ($16 and $12 on U.S. site… saw them on sale a few weeks ago for $8.xx).

  9. syunismile says:

Also, for those who have ‘unelastic skin’ I suggest collagen-rich seafood/supplements/gelatin desserts?

I ate a lot of gelatin desserts when losing weight.

  10. sk says:

sorry stretch mark can not be completely removed however you can reduce it. Skin tightening via exercise and tanning.

  11. Maggie says:

Actually I spoke about this with my doctor and tanning does nothing if anything it makes it more visible since the actual stretch marks can’t tan. So the skin around it will be dark but the stretch marks remain white.

  12. Julie says:

A friend of is a Dermatologist and suggested to apply Glycolic peel in the morning and tretinoin cream at night and It worked for me!!! Im so happy now that I don’t get intimidated to those girls wearing 2 piece cos my stretch marks are GONE!!!

  13. Jennifer says:

    Hi ,

I always had pretty bad stretch marks and red scars around my belly region ever since I gave birth to my three kids.I had tried Vitamin E oil and cocoa butter which a number of people had recommended but it didn’t seem to work. My Doctor had even suggested a Tummy Tuck. I then recently read an article by a lady who supposedly got rid of her stretch marks using a particular cream. I tried it and it worked really well. My stretch marks disappeared in 4 weeks. . You can read more about the lady’s article at the link below.

  14. Coco says:

I recently seen a commercial about this product…but not sure if it works. EVERYTHING nowadays seems to “claim” it prevents or removes stretch marks. I highly doubt it though…but thought maybe someone is still interested in trying…

While I was pregnant, I applied cocoa butter, vitamin e etc…and nothing worked…I have stretch marks all around my tummy, hips, thighs…you name it. I’ve read that there is nothing you can use to PREVENT stretch marks during pregnancy. Every woman’s skin type is different. If you’ve used lotions or creams before and never had stretch marks when you were pregnant, you are probably just one of the lucky few woman blessed with great skin. Not only do I see the stretch marks on my body, I feel them. It’s horrible! BUT when I look at my beautiful healthy baby girl…it’s all worth it…

  16. striae says:

Some stretch mark creams do actually work very well like Strivectin and TriLasten based on my experience.

  17. Angel says:

I am not pregnant, not even overweight and have stretch marks and I am only 19. Is there anything that will resduce the look of them? I am trying the Palmers Stretch Mark Cream, I started yesterday so no results yet. It’s cheap enough to conintue to buy if it works as well. I’ve tried Vitamin E, Cocoa Butter…nothing works. They’ve just gotten worse. Please, someone must know of something.

  18. hi nice post I currently use a cream called cosmetyn to treat stretchmarks I done a little review of it on my site if

  19. Arbonne says:

I have had 4 kids, and though I didn’t get any stretchmarks on my stomach, I did get them on my sides, the front of my thighs, and even on the back of my calves. I started using Arbonne’s body serum and lotion. It didn’t make them disappear(as I don’t think anything can but surgery), but it did tighten them and make them blend more into my surrounding skin, making them much less noticable.

  20. Amy says:

When I got them (and I got them really bad regardless of all the creams I tried) I was super embarrased by them, I didn’t even want my husband to see them. But he says that to him they are a symbol of how much I love him and my daughter by being willing to get them to make us a family and he says that it makes me beautiful. Now, I know, it kinda sounds cheesy and maybe even like something he said just to make me feel better, but i thought it was super sweet and they don’t bother me as much. Anyhow, I’ve never found anything that got rid of them, and my doctor says time will fade them but there are no magical creams out there..

  21. Erin says:

I’m 19, and I have stretch marks, but no kids. I have them on my hips and my breasts, for some weird reason. I used to be really skinny, but then puberty hit and I gained about 25 pounds over one summer, and I think that’s where they came from.
I’ve read all the reviews, and I’m grateful for the ideas, but has anyone done the laser surgery? I heard that it’s really effective and less invasive than the skin removal surgery would be.
    Good luck, everyone 🙂

  22. Monica says:

I am 13 years old and I have stretch marks on my thighs, hips, breast, arms. I tried bio oil that didnt work I also tried Vitamin E that also didnt work. And Im not pregnant. I dont know what to try maybe ill look in at Palmers Coconut Butter

  23. Lindsay says:

Hi, I am currently 3 months pregnant with my first child, and from the day I found out (about 5 weeks or so) I started using the bio oil. It was very oily and greasy and a few friends who have had children suggested using Palmers coco butter formula. I find the solution is alot more of a soothing cream. I usually apply it after a shower when I dry myself off and before bed, and whenever I think about it. I have a few light stretch marks on my legs from gaining some weight over the years. Most of my friends, like alot of people on this site, have said that it hasn’t really worked. But why not try atleast right? A bottle is relatively cheap, about 10 dollars, and lasts about a month and a half to two months. I’ll post something if any stretch marks arise, but again good luck ladies.. even to the men!!

  24. Rhonda says:

At 23 and 105 pounds (then gain 17)i used just ordinary cocoa butter (after showers and alot at night)then 12 years later (and 107 pounds) had my second daughter and did the same (gain 23 pounds)i did not get any stretch marks but a few on my brests (nursing i think)now at 51 i don’t have any,so i think really any cocoa butter is good and lather alot of it on at night too.

  25. Carmen says:

I’ve used the stretchmark cream from The Body Shop – It works! After only 2 weeks of use, my stretchmarks are fading.

  26. Mellie says:

Bio-Oil works wonders! use it gals cuz it may not completely take them away but diminishes them in just a few weeks! also exercise REALLY helps! combine weight and cardio.

  27. David says:

Why is every page about stretch marks centred around pregnancy ??
I’m male and I used to be very skinny until I started lifting weights at the local gym. I got results within weeks, and stretch marks within months. My arms are FULL of stretch marks from muscle gain. My biceps are surrounded by them. My abdomen is even worse.

If there are any guys out there, I’ve heard that you should try to gain 6 pounds of fat first … THEN 10 pounds of muscle … if you gain 10 pounds of muscle right off the bat, you’ll look like me .. and it’s not worth it.

  28. Shawnsgal says:

    Bio-Oil is a WONDERFUL product….I just had a baby last July……

  29. get article was def a big help in my research of this topic

  30. honeybee. says:

I’ve been using bio-oil for a few months, and I’m not satisfied with the
    results.

  31. How fast can somebody start to experience the results from utilizing it?

  32. Excellent articles. I sometimes find it hard coming up with articles for my website but you did a great job here.

  33. Raaz says:

Stretch mark creams didn’t work for my stretch marks that I had since puberty. I think your best bet is to do some research and check out clinics in your area and go for consultations (usually free). I’m on a treatment plan right now, but I’ve just started.

  34. Lyndsay says:

I ordered the “free” trial and turned out that to cancel they will NOT phone you back to cancel therefore charging you $80 because you don’t cancel within their trial offer time period.
    HORRIBLE COMPANY!!!!!!!! steer clear!

  35. When it comes to taking care of your skin… do not get carried away with flashy cosmetic labels. It is better to understand your skin type and select a skin care product that is suitable for you. Before you try out any skin care product make sure you are not allergic to any ingredient used there.

  36. Danielle says:

Tri-Lastin SR doesnt work. I’m 17 and got stretchmarks after a growth spurt due to puberty, was 110lbs and gained 15lbs i have horrible stretchmarks all over my hips and inner thighs, also tried bio oil for over a year and nothing, and i’ve gone through four bottles of TriLastinSR, huge waste of money:( still searching for the right product, i want to be able to wear a bathingsuit again!

  37. Mellie says:

Im only 17 and I have stretch marks on my stomach… It really sucks im trying bio oil but they just dont want to leave fast enough. Its summer time and I want to be able to go to the beach and suntan with my friends without being so nervous about how I look. I need soemthing eles that will be able to make them fade faster.

  38. Ebony says:

I’m 24 and I don’t have any children yet but still, I have stretch marks all over my arms and thighs. It’s a bit depressing because I can’t wear any sleeveless tops without them ever showing. I tried using for 2 weeks now Palmer’s cream and it lightened the marks a bit.

  39. Marie says:

My experience as a regular user of different cosmetic creams is that stretch marks can not be removed but often the condition can be improved and among topical tretaments spanish danaefabienne stretch marks cream is among the more effective, in many cases it is advantageous to combine with other treatments such as laser therapy.

  40. jill says:

bio oil worked amazing on almost eliminating a nasty scar on my neck….unless you know it its there and really look you would never notice., i used two to three times a day for about 6 months….recently pregnant and I’ve started it twice a day optimistic for similar results. hope it works for me and you

  41. Deb says:

From my experience, stretch mark creams rarely get rid of stretch marks entirely, but they can be effective at minimizing them as much as possible. When you take steps early when the marks are red and at their worst, they heal much better and less noticeable.

  42. Just desire to say your article is as surprising. The clearness to your submit is just nice and that i can suppose you are a professional on this subject.
