I used it as directed. I saved $300 on a fare from Saskatoon to Vancouver. My child travelled free with my paid fare. I was very happy with it — but you have to read the offer carefully. I would never book anything without reading it first. In fact, I did have trouble with the website at first, so called an agent, and he happily walked me through it and gave me details. Even if I had selected the supersaver fare, it would have been more than 100 dollars more than the fare with the coupon. I would suggest that for short distances, you won’t save much — but big trips, you will. Basically, my son and I travelled from Saskatoon to Vancouver and back again for $389 taxes included. Great trip!

Hi Adam,
I DO know how to read and I feel cheated.
I bought the Sunlight product because the coupon on the bottle CLEARLY stated “50% discount off a regular adult fare” and NOT “Valid for a 50% discount on the adult regular Economy class fare…“
When I go shopping I do not drag along my laptop and so could not possibly be expected to check the finer details as outlined at viarail.ca/conditions/11472.
Imagine my surprise when I went into the station for a quote with this coupon and I was informed that it was for regular fare on Economy ONLY. Nowhere on the coupon does it say that at all. That’s false advertising.
Considering that I bought 3 bottle of Sunlight at $7/bottle ($21 plus tx) I saved exactly –10.00 (yes, I realise I have the product to use but I could have bought any other product and booked the $69.00 fare and had virtually the same outcome.
I’m going back to TIDE — do you hear me Sunlight? — TIDE (or any other brand that I haven’t caught falsely advertising yet). For shame Sunlight!

Furthermore, the email confirmation you get CLEARLY tells you must bring the coupon to the station or the offer is not valid.

There’s no scam. PEOPLE CAN’T READ AND PEOPLE DON’T LIKE IT WHEN THEY CAN’T GETAWAY WITH SOMETHING.

Some of you people cannot read, or are not very smart! Why do you feel there’s a scam here? This is a printed coupon that clearly tells where to go to get the conditions. Those conditions clearly state you get 50% off of the full adult regular fare… NOT the student fare. NOT the senior, or youth or child fare. AND of course, NOT the Discounted or Supersaver or Special fares. It tells you exactly what you get, and if you check that, you get exactly that. Secondly, the conditions clearly state you need to bring the coupon with you to the station to get the discount when the pick up the tickets. No questions and no confusion there. So someone decided to post the discount code here and suggested “hey — try it — maybe you can getaway with something”. Turns out you can’t. So VIA and Sunlight are scamming anyone. People just don’t know how to read! Geez people.

If anyone has any of these Sunlight coupon booklets and they’re not going to use the VIA Rail 50% discount coupon before it expires on March 31st, would you be willing to give it away ? I will send a self-addressed, postage-paid envelope, then all you would need to do is stick the coupon in it and mail it back to me. I would just need to receive it by Thursday, February 25th. The lady at sunlight advised me that I could do the following to obtain a coupon:
1. Purchase 2 x or 3x sunlight laundry detergent
2. mail the original reciept to Sunlight Saving Booklet offer, PO 38, Saint John New Brunswick E2L 3X1 and if they had any coupons left the would mail me one. She said it would take them 4 — 6 weeks to process this.

This Sunlight coupon is the BIGGEST scam ever! Only after I booked my ticket online with Via Rail, do I find out that I have to get an original Sunlight coupon, which is nowwhere to be found!
I spoke to Via Rail & Sunlight & both did not know where I can find the coupon! What a scam! Now I have to pay full price on my ticket!
This should be reported to someone like Consumer Affairs for misleading the Consumer!! Very very unfair!

I just booked an one-way trip from Montreal to Quebec City via VIA Rail Canada website. 50% of discount did appear on my account! What I did is that, instead of going to the link shown above, I entered the desired trip on the VIA website then choosed a regular economy couch. Keyed in the discount code after the price page appeared. The original price was around CAD$80 and then the final fare was CAD$40. The only change was that the Refundable & exchangeable rule for the original regular economy seat was then automatically modified to be non-refundable & non-exchangeable. In my circumstance, sacrificing the flexibility for saving big money is worth a try!

I followed all their instructions — booked comfort adult regular fare only — put in the code and it reduced the base fare from 156 to 117. Last time I checked, that’s not 50%

Just booked a Jasper to Vancouver trip. Key to getting this to work is selecting the “Regular” fare for your trip. The discount field does not appear until late in the booking process. You can leave the second field that pops up blank. $36 saving off the Comfort Supersaver fare (from $158).

I asked Via Rail why I was seeing a 13% reduction in my fare rather than a 50% reduction and here’s what they said:

The Sunlight Coupon entitles you to 50% off of the Adult Comfort Class Regular fare. This coupon will not apply to already reduced fares such as the Comfort Supersaver, Comfort Discounted or Comfort Special fares.

The round trip fare of $138.00 plus tax between Ottawa and Toronto is with our Comfort — Special fare plan. The 50% coupon does not apply to this fare.

The Comfort class Regular fare for a round trip between Ottawa and Toronto is $240.00 plus tax. The 50% couppon applies to this fare only.

Please note, we offer four fare plans in Comfort class (economy): Comfort — Regular fare, Comfort — Discounted fare, Comfort — Supersaver fare and Comfort — Special fare. There is absolutely no difference in class of service between Comfort — Regular fare, Comfort — Discounted fare, Comfort — Supersaver fare and Comfort — Special fare except for the price. Comfort — Discounted fare, Comfort — Supersaver fare and Comfort — Special fare are fare plans with an advance purchase discounted fare (purchase at least 3 days in advance for Comfort — Discounted and Comfort — Supersaver, purchase at least 7 days in advance for Comfort — Special) with limited availability and subject to service charges for cancellation or exchange.
