Pumpkin Pie VS. Apple Pie

pumpkin-pieapple-pie

This year I’m in charge of bringing dessert to my parents’ house for Thanksgiving. I know that two of the most beloved Thanksgiving desserts are pumpkin pie and apple pie. Here is where the problem lies: I love pie but these are the only two pies that I dislike. What am I gonna do? Bring a dessert that I won’t eat? Another problem: I don’t know how to make pie! Well enough about my personal problems. What I really want to know is, which pie do you prefer? Pumpkin or Apple? Maybe both?

Postscript: I know this is not a post about deals/coupons/freebies etc. I am aware of that and no need to point it out. Thank you and have a Happy Thanksgiving to all!

It’s funny you say that C! I am making both pumpkin and apple! As for what you could make instead of pie, maybe try a trifle? It always looks pretty and is nice and light! A plain cheesecake with a few toppings to select from (berries, caramel sauce, chocolate)? As for what I prefer, I like both!

  2. mrsjanuary says:

APPLE APPLE! me no likey pumpkin pie.

  3. Melody113 says:

Pumpkin pie for sure and of couse a cheese cake. Go to Costco they make it great.

  4. IRefuseToPayFullPrice says:

E – I thought of cheesecake, but I looked at recipes online and it looks like it has a very high failure rate, especially for an amateur baker like me. And I use the term “baker” loosely. Lol!

  5. NL_ shopper says:

We do homemade pumpkin cheesecake…mmm…no mush of the pie, but all the yummy fall flavours and the luxury of cheesecake.

  6. IRefuseToPayFullPrice says:

Melody113 – How much is a cheesecake at Costco? If I forego the home-made route and go store-bought, cheesecake will be my choice.

  7. kelly says:

I think pumpkin pie is more traditional for Thanksgiving. Pumpkin cheesecake is the best! But even my family makes both pumpkin and apple pie for the picky eaters. Perhaps bring both of those and a third kind for yourself!

  8. julie says:

I make Pumpkin Nut Chiffon Pie. It is the best. All the great flavor of pumpkin pie but not such a heavy dessert at the end of a big meal. It has bits of candied ginger and chopped pecans throughout. MMMMMMMMMMM GOOD!

  9. Eeyah says:

I’m all over pumpkin pie! πŸ™‚ But I am not such a fan of apple….what about making an apple crisp? that still falls (no pun intended! lol)within the season, but isn’t a pie, yet still hits the same taste buds??? MMMMM now I’m craving apple crisp. LOL I just thought about how I like crisp but not pie, I’m weird I know!

  10. IRefuseToPayFullPrice says:

    Tally so far:
    Apple – 1
    Pumpkin (including variations) – 5
    Both – 1
    Where are the apple lovers?

  11. melissafle says:

I really want pumpkin pie now =(

  12. Melody113 says:

The pumpkin cheese cake is between $13-$16 can’t quite remember as I bought the pumpkin pie for $5.99 and it is huge. That cheese cake is to die for by the way

  13. Rachel says:

    Pumpkin pie!!!!

  14. Kathleen says:

    Hands Down PUMPKIN!

  15. Jessica says:

In my family we never have pie. For some reason noone in our family likes pumpkin pie but we all love a recipe my Aunt found years ago. It is pumpkin ice cream and on the bottom we put graham cracker crumbs. We all love it and we don’t have to worry about making anymore decisions!

  16. Elisam says:

I love pumpkin cheesecake I make it but I buy already done crust so it easier, it so yummy!

  17. Joe says:

I loooooove pumpkin, and I think it is special for Thanksgiving, but I know a lot of people don’t. I also love carrot – it must be the similar spices. Apple pie I think of as being a year-round thing.

Maybe you could instead get pumpkin coffee from Starbucks for lattes – I think more people like pumpkin lattes than pie – and buy a tray of dessert bars that have brownies, nanaimo bars, date bars, etc? Or pumpkin ice cream – I know I have seen that somewhere.

  18. Cowgirl says:

I personally prefer pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving.

You don’t mention how many people will be at your dinner or how much dessert you need to bring. If there will be enough people that you can justify more than one dessert, how about traditional pumpkin pie and one of your favourites, like carrot cake or chocolate chip cookies or even blueberry pie? You might even be able to find a two-for $X deal at the grocery store if you don’t want to bake.

  19. mama jill says:

Safeway has a pretty descent pumpkin pie for free if you buy 3 cristie products like crackers etc and they are on for 2 for 4.00. So you can get 3 boxes of crackers and a pie for 6 dollars…not bad. And then for the apple, make a apple crumble. It is idiot proof, no pie shells involved. Look on the internet for a recipe, they are very easy to make.

  20. operabob says:

    Strawberry-Rhubarb pie for me!

  21. MamaD says:

I LOVE Pumpkin Pie.. mainly because its always good.. where as Apple Pie, Ive tried a few that are less than spectacular..
As for the trifle suggestion.. I second that!
You should make a Crispy Crunch Trifle! Its sooooooooooooo easy!!
    Check out the recipe:
    Ingredients
1 Large Chocolate cake prepared (you can use angel food or vanilla as well)
2 pkgs Chocolate pudding mix (prepared according to directions)
6 Crispy Crunch Chocolate bars crushed
    2 Tubs Cool Whip
    Directions
    Preheat oven to 350Β°F.
Break 1/2 of cake into pieces and put on bottom of bowl.
Layer 1 pkg pudding mix prepared over cake.
Layer half the crispy crunch crumbs over that. Layer 1 tub Cool whip. Repear layers again. Reserve a few Chocolate bar crumbs for the top. Yield: serves 8

  22. Elizabeth Blaze says:

A few years ago I brought a cheesecake to our family Christmas. Ever since then, now everyone demands that I bring it for everything! It’s the no bake kind that you make with Dream Whip and cream cheese. The family will only eat pie if there’s no cheesecake left & I have become the favourite Aunt!

  23. ssss says:

im for apple… HATE pumpkin. So strange that most people like pumpkin though, i wouldnt have guessed!

  24. thepixie says:

I like both, but prefer apple unless it’s Thanksgiving.

Why not make a pecan pie? It’s equally seasonal in terms of flavours, and it would be a nice change from the apple/pumpkin dichotomy/conumdrum!

  25. dizzyb says:

    mmmmm APPLE!
But boterkoek (dutch for butter cake) has been a bit of a tradition for us. Nothing like a mound of sugar and fat to thank God for the abundance of food we have! LOL

  26. jess_147 says:

    I love apple pie…

  27. We bought our pumpkin pie at Costco today, and yes, it’s huge! I’ll also make an apple crisp.
I have a pumpkin ice cream recipe too, and everyone loved it. Probably the same recipe that Jessica’s aunt found. Another favourite is frozen lemon meringue.

  28. dee says:

Pumpkin pie! I’ll eat apple but it’s not my favourite!:)

  29. ahatt says:

I love both!! I agree with what everyone suggested, if you don’t feel confident in yourself as a baker, just get a cheesecake from Costco πŸ™‚ Then you don’t have to worry about the high failure rate! lol

  30. Alee142010 says:

    Apple.

But seriously don’t take a dessert that you don’t like.
Brainstorm, you know your personal fav’s ! Just call the hostess and She/He will prob be totally fine with a switch out of pumkin, or apple!

  31. Jennby23 says:

Hey! you could always make a selection of tarts!! Get cans of pumpkin, apple, blueberry, cherry pie fillings and get a few boxes of Tenderflake tart cups, and your set!! That’s what I’m doing this year, and so far already a HUGE hit!

  32. Leanne says:

Why not buy some of the Tenderflake mini pie shells and make some with a pumpkin filling and some with whatever filling you like? That way you don’t have to mess with making a crust and you can just fill them up!! Easy!!

  33. Natalka says:

Nothing wrong with apple pie – though it’s an all-year round one.
It’s just really nice to have pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving – I don’t make them anymore, and have bought them all over throughout the years, and our definite fave is the Safeway pumpkin pie – great crust and just a hint of spice.

I like the tart idea that Jennby23 mentioned – but even better than the Tenderflake tart shells are the No Name ones at Superstore/Extra (I don’t know where you live, but they are Loblaws stores) – they are frozen, and buy the pie crust ones, not the sweetened ones.

Just in case you end up making pumpkin ones yourself, make sure you buy prepared pumpkin filling in the can, not just pumpkin. Of course, unless you want to mix it up yourself. Libby’s is the best bought one.

Here’s a great recipe for Apple Struesel Cheesecake (easy to make)
    http://forum.smartcanucks.ca/102716-apple-recipes-anyone-canada/

Or, just make a great dessert like Sex In A Pan… yummy and easy!

  34. Sandra says:

Take brownies and ice cream. Unless you don’t like brownies and ice cream.

  35. Larry G says:

    serve kidney pie MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  36. Cathy Farley says:

Try a Lemon pie. I think that will work for Thanksgiving

  37. Denise says:

Bring something u like and a pie for everyone else:)

Make sure u get ur share first so it isn’t all gone

  38. Sallycat says:

I was at Costco today. They had huge pumpkin and apple pies. I didn’t check the prices but I’m sure they were a good deal because everyone was buying them.

Apple or Pumpkin? I definitely prefer Apple!

  39. ninna says:

    pumpkin– BLAH!

    apple–YEAH!

    πŸ™‚

Agree with the above poster! Absolutely make sure you have a dessert there that you like!

  40. Terri says:

Pumpkin all the way, with lots of whipped cream!!!

  41. Nicole says:

    Pumpkin

  42. Sally says:

Pumpkin, only if theres whipped cream. If theres no whipped cream heck no.

  43. anisa says:

    omg punkin!
i’m not big on apple pie, but a well made apple crisp served a la mode could rival punkin pie, definitly πŸ™‚

  44. CCG says:

I hate pumpkin pie, and i dont know how many people going actually would like it .. why not post on your facebook wall ( if u have it and ask your family members what they’d prefer to eat )

  45. Litesandsirens911 says:

I like apple best, because I like it melted with sharp cheddar cheese on top…

  46. Corbinx says:

Pumpkin pie! But there’s nothing wrong with bringing three desserts!

  47. baggypants says:

Apple Crumble pie is the best….but if you don’t want to make a pie…what about Cranberry Upside Down Cake??? Its basically the same as pineapple, but you add cranberries to the bottom of the pan…so yummy!!

  48. icecaplover says:

    I like homemade apple pie…

  49. Tre says:

Pecan pie is delicious and I prefer it above the other two!

  50. CAD says:

I like and suggest pumpkin cheese cake. And I wanted to point out that your question is in fact directly related to the deal above – free pumpkin pie wus $30 at M&M

  51. LeveledOut says:

I like the apple pumpkin pie! (hehe now I’m just messin’ with ya =P )

  52. Isabelle says:

Go with Pumpkin, and I saw a fabulous one, and huge, at Costco for $5.99 which is what I’m buying instead of making, which is what I usually do.

  53. frugal_gal says:

I agree with others…bring a dessert you like. An apple crisp/apple crumble is a great idea and easy to make (I’m lousy in the baking department and made apple crisps last fall and everyone loved them; they were easy to make and you can’t really mess it up believe me).
For us, traditionally we’d have apple pie or pecan pie (or sugar pie when you don’t add pecans!) this time or year; I like both.

  54. Heather says:

Both will please everyone, but personally I HATE pumpkin, its all about the apple mmm

  55. Jacqueline says:

I am with you i dont like either pie but unfortunately i have always brought deserts i dont like because everyone else likes them but i usually bring something for myself like a small thing of pudding or something. You dont have to make the pies from scratch go buy one from one of the store or even a bakery.

  56. Digi says:

    Pumpkin!!!!!

  57. Lisa says:

Apple pie!! I just can’t seem to enjoy the taste of pumpkin. Cheesecake is super easy to make and you could bring a small variety of toppings so people could add their own. Happy Thanksgiving no matter what dessert you bring I’m sure no one will complain. :0)

  58. Pumpkin pie is only really readily available during one time of the year. This time of year. Bring pumpkin as a service to your friends/family, as if they have a craving sometime in April, they’ll at least have a fond memory of the pie you brought ’em.

  59. MrWillabie says:

I like apple and my wife likes pumpkin. Safeway makes a nice version of both. After last weeks sale our freezer is full-o-pie! No compromises here! To each his/her own! πŸ˜‰

  60. bluerose says:

    Apple pie please.

  61. Ashley says:

Pumpkin pie is the BEST!! Although I really hate pie crust. I have no idea why, I just leave it every time.

BTW have any of the pumpkin lovers out there tried the pumpkin pie blizzard at Dairy Queen? It takes it to a whole new pumpkin-y goodness level!

  62. Mo0ing_duckie says:

Personally, I rarely serve Apple or Pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving, instead I make Lemon Meringue pie. It’s pretty simple to whip up once you get the hang of it (and follow the instructions very carefully) Or, you could buy one store bought.

If I had to choose between both Apple and Pumpkin, I pick Apple.

  63. Heather says:

I love both apple (with lots of cinnamon) and pumpkin. An easy way to make pumpkin pie is to make a oatmeal cookie type crust instead of a pastry crust. It is a bit crunchy like a crisp, but you just press it into the bottom and sides of the pie plate, so way easier than a roll out pie crust. You can actually use this type of crust for apple pie too. As for the pumpkin filling it is super easy to make with canned pumpkin and evaporated milk. I like the recipes that add bit of molasses, or maple syrup. If you google pumpkin pie with oatmeal crust recipe you’ll find something good. Another idea is to make different types of tarts, you could use store bought pastry and fill them with various fillings so everyone can choose what they like. I also love the idea of pumpkin cheesecake, I’ve never made it, but I just might try it this year. Good luck and Happy Thanksgiving!

  64. Lisa says:

Philly cream cheesecakes are the best and are easy to make.

  65. Robin says:

PUMPKIN is my favourite all time pie!

  66. mhk says:

Apple crumble – with vanilla ice cream! mmmm

  67. Isabel says:

    Pumpkin

  68. Zeen says:

If there was one food that I had to live off of everyday for the rest of eternity,, I would choose PUMPKIN PIE!!!

  69. Skippy says:

Buy three pies, they are on sale @ most stores for $3.99
If you don’t like pie at all, then buy two and whatever you like for desert.
Thanksgiving Dinner comes but once a year, spend a little extra if need be.
Skippy will be having Apple, as it is the family choice.
Count your blessings one and all!

  70. freestuffforme says:

I hate pumpkin pie, but I do like apple pie. My mom often makes a pecan pie, which is so much better than either of those, though.

Store-bought pies are pretty good these days. I like the ones sold at Loblaws/Real Canadian Superstore. I think they’re even on sale at RCSS right now.

  71. TheGirlOutWest says:

Pumpkin with LOADS of real whipped cream, or home made Apple with lots of cinnamon. The Pumpkin Pie to die for right now (for all of you Westerners) is at Earl’s Restaurant. SINFUL!
I make a mean brandied pumpkin cheesecake, and for all of you non-bakers, cheesecake is a breeze to make – if it cracks too much after baking, well, h_ll, that’s why God made whipped cream!

  72. CarlyinCanada says:

Oh I love this thread but haven’t read all the comments yet! πŸ™‚

We love both Pumpkin & Apple pie! But we made Apple Crisps a couple weeks ago & froze them…

The last 2 days I made 7 Pumpkin Pies & 7 Dozen tarts, (pumpkin, raspberry, maple walnut butter tarts),& date squares) Sold some & gave some to friends & some for family too! lol

  73. Ema says:

    Pumpkin with whipped cream!!!
Tried to find a pumpkin cheesecake at costco but apparently they don’t have them.
I found a small pumpkin cheesecake at fortino’s on sale for $5.99 reg. $7.99. Hope that it’s yummy!!!

  74. Hello, I tried your chocolate cake recipe some days ago but somehow couldn’t achieve the same result as you, my cake clearly wasn’t looking that good (but tasted fine). What sort of chocolate are you using? Maybe it’s coming from the flour I used, i’m gluten intelorant so I used chickpea flour instead of usual wheat flour.

  75. Stephania says:

PUMPKIN all the way! However, it’s got to be homemade/quality pie or bust.

I’m not a big fan of apple desserts.

  76. mary walsh says:

Costco’s pumpkin pie is the only one that I can say I like the taste of. Their frozen, four kinds in one box, cheesecake is very good and is around $20. But… the best cheesecake I have had in a long time is the Presidents Choice Apple, Carmel, Pecan frozen cheescake. I make the Dreamwhip, icing sugar, no bake cheescake also, and its delish, but the price of ingredients is more than a prepared one.

  77. Alex says:

Pumpkin Pie!!! Pumpkin Pie!!! Pumpkin Pie!!!
Apple pie is great also but not for Thanksgiving unless you really don’t like it.

  78. moe says:

PUMPKIN PIE & Whipping Cream, Freshley WHIPPED Gets my VOTE!!!
    mmm. . .
    Moe knows. . .

  79. Lady8i8 says:

I’d have to say both as well if given a choice between the two.. but Cheesecake would win Hands down! πŸ™‚

    Happy Thanksgiving everyone! πŸ™‚

  80. Sally says:

    pecan is pretty good lol!

  81. mlongboat says:

BOTH! I just made a pumpkin pie and a dutch apple pie (I don’t like crust so I really prefer it to the traditional apple pie). I do pumpkin cheesecake at Christmas and it’s always well received.
Pecan is great too but it’s not the easiest to make. Some find it too sweet so its best served with FRESH unsweetened whipped cream.

  82. FreebieChick says:

Hands down Pumpkin pie with real whipped cream! Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

I’m taking Carrot cake to my parent’s tomorrow! There will already be a table full of desserts including pumpkin & apple.

    Happy Thanksgiving SC!

  83. Jen says:

Neither! I absolutely HATE pie! I know how to make it from scratch, but I won’t touch it! We never have dessert at Thanksgiving, though! πŸ™‚

  84. Frugal.Tea says:

mmm…I love pumpkin pie, on it’s own or as ice cream πŸ™‚ oh so very tasty. Not a fan of apple pie though. I bought a large pumpkin pie for me and an apple pie for everyone else.

  85. Chris says:

Well I can honestly say that I love both Apple and Pumpkin pies!!! This year, my brother usually brings dessert but I happened to get one of the Kraft recipe books with the coupons in it and it had a recipe in there for Oreo Cheesecake! The picture looked so good I said “I am making that for dessert!!!”.

I went and bought the ingredients two weeks ago as they were on sale. I started to make it last night at about 8:30 pm. Had the Oreo crumbs in the pan..softening the cheese in the microwave… then noticed that it called for 3 eggs! OOOOHHHH NOOOOOO! We had ZERO in the house and of course, all the stores are closed! So I had to visit Mac’s milk and pay $2.79 for a dozen eggs! So much for I refuse to pay full price! *LOL*

I must say it didn’t turn out like the picture (but really does it ever???) but it should be good! Smells good!!!

For you now, I guess you would be best to go to Macs and get some chocolate bars… no grocery stores are open anyhow! πŸ™‚

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!

  86. IRefuseToPayFullPrice says:

Thanks for all the great responses to my post. I enjoyed reading all of them and got some great ideas and recipes for next year. If you’re wondering what dessert was had at my parent’s Thanksgiving dinner, it was a mango mousse cake, bought at Metro! Lol!

  87. Amanda says:

Pumpkin pie all the way for Thanksgiving!!! Apple pie or crisp A La Mode is very yummy!!! I LOVE Cherry pie A La Mode the BEST!!! But I agree the Costco pumpkin pie is the only way to go!!!

  88. Supafly says:

Pumpkin, hands down! More specifically, “Impossible Pumkin Pie”. It is called so because there is no crust.

  89. Hello there, You’ve done an incredible job. I will certainly digg it and for my part suggest to my friends. I’m sure they’ll be benefited from this site.
