Haligonians, you’re in for a treat because IKEA Canada is opening its first full-sized furniture and home goods store right in your backyard in Halifax, Nova Scotia! Maritimers will finally be able to take advantage of IKEA’s modern architectural designs and low cost furniture when the 30,500 square meter store begins construction this summer for an expected opening in the fall of 2017. The IKEA store’s location will be located in Dartmouth Crossing and will create hundreds of jobs as people will be hired directly and indirectly through spinoff jobs.
To add onto the excitement, the IKEA store in Halifax will be designed to be the most sustainable store in Canada by focusing on using solar energy, geothermal energy for heating, as well as 100% LED lighting throughout the store.
“IKEA’s vision is to create a better everyday life for the many people, and we are determined to have a positive impact on people and the planet,” added Sjöstrand, president of IKEA Canada. “IKEA Halifax will be constructed and operated with sustainability in mind, and will also be a destination to find solutions for a more sustainable life at home.”
Before the IKEA store opens in Halifax, the company will do 100 home visits to interview and ask what people find frustrating about their homes and learn about their needs. IKEA wants to help people live a better everyday life at home and show them new ideas to solve their needs.

This is not the first IKEA store to open in Atlantic Canada. Maritimers of a certain age will remember that IKEA opened its first ever North American store in the Burnside area of Dartmouth, N.S. in 1975, unfortunately it closed 13 years later. It is about time they returned, hoping for one of the smaller pick up locations to open in Moncton too.
