The partners of Toronto’s Earth Hour today announced that multi-platinum Grammy and Juno Award-winner, and Canada’s own, Nelly Furtado will join Earth Hour as the first Canadian Earth Hour Ambassador. She will also perform a free concert at Nathan Phillips Square on March 29 to celebrate Earth Hour.
As an Earth Hour Ambassador and an advocate for the environment, Nelly Furtado will play an unplugged concert at the Earth Hour community event, starting at 7:30 p.m. The organizers are taking steps to make the event as carbon-neutral as possible — including powering the event with green, renewable energy from Bullfrog Power. People from across the GTA are invited to attend.
You can hop in your car, bus or tram and go downtown to take in an all-star spectacular, or you can just take advantage of this really really rare and precious opportunity to just step out into your urban backyard and soak in a real all-star spectacular:

Now THIS is more like what I imagined folks might do during an collective hour of lightlessness, the news from Owen Sound shows lots of folks out by the Town Hall, holding candles and just being neighbourly:
There was a good turnout at the event and more than a couple positive messages, including conservation of energy, the idea of community(and what it really means as we move forward as a population%u2026) and some tough words against waste (in this case waste = light pollution, unnecessary/excessive lighting that apparently accounts for over a billion dollars annually and provides little to no useful service to society.
This latter point was made by the the Bruce County Astronomical Society, whose members were on site last night sharing telescopic views of the night sky and a message of hope/support for energy conservation, especially as it contributes to dark skies [ Earth Hour in Owen Sound ]
Here at home, tho, we just jammed, drums, sax, recorders … it was 17 minutes past 9 before we noticed we were already over the mark
