The Nintendo 3DS is now availble for pre order at Future Shop online.  The offical release date is March 27 2011, with a steep retail value of $249.99. The base colours are a beautiful teal blue and of course traditional black.

The 3DS is home to the classic Nintendo DS controls with a handful of significant differences that completely change the face of portable gaming. It still has the classic controls, as well as the touchscreen and stylus. But it also has a 3D display that’s 10% larger, and a Circle Pad. Together, they create an experience that comes to life with never-seen-before detail and the accuracy of a console gaming system.

Other awesome features include:

3D Depth Slider that lets you select the level of 3D they enjoy the most
Built-in motion sensor and gyro sensor can react to the motion and tilt of the system
3 cameras: one pointing inward, and two pointing outward that allow you to capture awesome 3D images, manipulate your pics, and even super-impose one on another
Sleep mode allows you to use the 3DS as a pedometer that lets you earn coins in exchange for additional content as you walk
Built-in parental controls that can be used to limit Internet access or some of the wireless functions
StreetPass lets you exchange game information with other Nintendo 3DS systems
SpotPass connects the device to public hotspots and receive new content and updates
Nintendo 3DS Sound lets you enjoy sound-manipulation tools or listen to MP3 or AAC music files
The Mii Maker application gives you new tools to create Mii characters even more easily
Nintendo eShop gives you access to downloadable games, as well as older games that were available for Game Boy and Game Boy Colour
Compatibility with all current Nintendo DS games Includes memory card slot and 2GB memory card (can be expanded later

Some of the features on this model look like they will be really neat.  The 3d of course being the big one, but the three cameras sound pretty cool too!  This will be on top of my sons wishlist for his birthday.  Will you be buying one?

    not worth it.

  2. Sally says:

    Care to elaborate?

  3. Michelle says:

Hm. It doesn’t seem like the features are that unique or remarkable. We might still get it though, since the last one we got was the DS lite.

  4. BMyltoft says:

Doesnt seem all that exciting, unfortunately.
Still love my DS lite though.
    Dont think Ill be upgrading.

  5. Eric says:

From what I’ve read, the 3D is quite remarkable, especially in games like Kid Icarus and Ocarina of Time. However, don’t expect battery life to be anywhere near previous Nintendo handhelds.

  6. EdLeafs says:

Too expensive…will probably have to wait a while longer before picking it up.

  7. mike says:

Ed, too expensive compared to what though. How many portable video game systems out there with 3D. How much would people expect to pay for a system with 3D, that connects wirelessly and where you can download games, and has the 3 cams, some of it of course people might not want all that stuff then yeah its not for you. When the original ds came out it was around that same price and had none of that.

just a warning for anyone thinking of getting this for their young child Nintendo states
“Nintendo Co. says children aged 6 or younger shouldn’t play with its upcoming 3DS handheld gaming system with 3-D technology, because it might affect vision development.”

  9. Faeore says:

If you’re prone to headaches it was advised at E3 when they released it to be very careful with this one.

The games may looks amazing but the 3D technology was very migraine causing to a lot of people who watched the demos for any length of time who had a history of headaches from video games.

Go here http://www.nintendo.com/3ds and take the virtual tour – even if not interested – its nice to be informed

  11. Andrea says:

I think the only reason I’d pick this up is because a lot of Nintendo’s games coming out are going to be exclusive to the 3DS (meaning they won’t play on a regular DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL). I’d probably wait till it goes down in price first though, that’s still a lot of money for a handheld, even with all the awesome features.

  12. EdLeafs says:

@Mike Just saying in general that new product tend to be more expensive during it’s introduction stage and there still may be many bugs that are overlooked. Look at the Wii for example or Sony’s PS3. The Wii came out with a price tag of $250, and PS3 at $700. Now they sell for half the cost with less bug issues and more stable.

  13. Laura says:

I’m hoping once this is released, it might bring down the price of the other DS systems. I really want a DSi Xl

How did you pay for the item? If you paid by credit card you should contact your credit card company and tell them. They should be able to advise you, to some degree, what is the best thing to do. You will need to provide them with paperwork to support your claim e.g an invoice and copies of the emails, clearing showing the dates. I suggest that you download a picture of the item you had ordered off the internet, by saving a copy of the whole page onto your computer. Then a digital photo of what they sent you, so should you need to you can use this as a visual evidence. Then it might be worth while to compose a ‘strong’ e-mail in Word or similar, so you can check how clear it sounds before sending and inform them that you have spoken and sent your credit card company all evidence of the dispute. Tell them if they do not dispatch the correct item immediately then you cannot accept any further deliveries from them as you will have to buy something similar for your holidays immediately. Also by law they are meant to supply a telephone number on their website so it might be worth phoning them. If they don’t you can ask them for one by email and threaten them with Trading Standards if they don’t supply you with one.Hope that helps to move it on for you.
