Tim Hortons will Accept Master Card and Eventually other Credit Card Payments in Canada

Tim Hortons will Accept Master Card and Eventually other Credit Card Payments in Canada

It’s about time! Tim Horton’s, welcome to the 21st century!

Finally Timmy’s will (or has already at some locations)  start accepting payments other than cash.  I’ve lost count of the number of times that I avoided Tim Horton’s simply because I didn’t have enough cash on me. I’m usually the guy in front of you in line at the grocery store express checkout, paying for my two items with a debit/credit card 😛 Tim Horton’s was almost the only reason I carried around cash. I personally welcome this change but I also understand why some might resent it. I can imagine how this change may slow down paying and lead to long lineups during the morning breakfast rush, especially when some people take forever to sign their credit card or enter their pin. We’ll see how well this new system goes. In the meantime the first and only electronic payment method will be Master Card. If you don’t have one you can apply for President Choice’s free Master Card. It comes with additional benefits such as point towards grocery shopping, etc.

I have been to a Mississauga location where they have a Master Card payment option already and they only accept it for amounts under $25 and NO signature is required, they even have the pay pass installed (for tapping the card).

  2. Justine says:

Ya ive seen paypass everywhere in kitchener too, even in the drivethru,

  3. In BC and Alberta you were already able to use your debit card at most locations. I don’t remember about the CC as it’s been a while since I’ve been there but I’m pretty sure you could do that too.

To clear up some “assumptions” made that were incorrect.

    1) Yes Timmys is rolling out MasterCard to all stores. Any MasterCard can be accepted up to any amount. For sales under $25 no signature is required. This IS QUICKER THAN PAYING CASH. Proven fact.

    2) With the exception of a few rogue franchise stores, they will not be accepting Visa, Amex or Interac. Why? Because they are too slow. Timmys would never go with anything that would slow lines…that is a given.

    3) Timmys is also rolling out MasterCard PayPass. This allows you to tap the card on the reader and you are done. Faster than anything.Any more secure. Citibank has MasterCard PayPass cards. Drive thrus are the super winner here. Just order, tap your card and leave.

On a trip across the Trans-Canada Highway to Cape Breton from Toronto in 2008, our major pet peeve was the fact that Tim “what’s-his-name” shops refused to take my CIBC debit card. The Shell gas station, with whom they were associated, were more open to accept the debit card. May Tim’s fail no matter what their new policy is!!!

The CAA seems to prefer Petrocan gas stations, and their points set-up. Also there was no problem with my CIBC credit card, so guess where I stopped for gas? I’ll continue with Petrocan and whatever eatery becomes associated with them. Tim’s battery acid slop is no longer on my list of favourite beverages.

On a trip from Toronto to Cape Breton on the Trans-Canada Highway in 2008, my pet peeve was the fact that my CIBC debit card, which takes about 10 seconds to use, was refused at the Tim “what’s-his-name” shops. The Shell gas stations, which seemed to be associated with the Tim shops, had no trouble accepting my debit cards!

The CAA seems to prefer Petrocan gas stations for their point system, so this also became my preferred stop on the highway. Whatever eatery is associated with them is very suitable as well. Tim’s battery acid slop is not on my list of favourites . . . no matter what changes are planned for the future. I have learned from my past experiences. May the Tim shops fail!
