RedBox Leaving Canada – Last Rentals on February 13th

Announcements

redbox

The latest in the line of companies going bankrupt or pulling out of Canada: RedBox announced that they are leaving Canada.  I know many people have free rental coupons from various promotions, so if you have one, you need to use it by February 13th.

You will have 20 days from the rental date, or until March 5th for recent rentals, to return any outstanding rentals or pay the full purchase price ($30 + tax for DVDs, $40 + tax for Blu-ray).  If your RedBox disappears before March 5th, you can contact them to return your rentals.  They say that the Canadian market just doesn’t have the remand they need to make it profitable.

If you bought a TeamBuy deal for RedBox, they are offering refunds, but no refunds will be given for other free promo codes (they recently gave out 10 free rentals as prizes for a contest etc).

Did you rent movies from RedBox?  If you did, what will you use now?

    Oh no 🙁

We rented from them. And we used to rent from Blockbuster. If we could, we’d rent from a locally owned place but they’re all gone, too…

We’re not into downloading… I miss the days of visiting the video store and being “inspired”. What a shame.

I’m so sad to see Redbox go. We rented from them often and thought their system was great (what could be easier than reserving online and picking it up less than 1km from your house?). I have no idea what we’ll use now, so I’d love to hear anyone else’s suggestions for alternatives. We wouldn’t mind renting online we just don’t know any good sites for a streaming-type rental.

Hey Rachel- Cineplex Store is pretty good.
http://www.cineplexstore.com I think, or just Google it. If you have a Scene card, you add it to your account and you earn points on rentals same way you would on going out to the movies. And then you can redeem those points towards free rentals or free movie tickets. My husband and I love it. Plus you don’t have to wait for it to download like iTunes, you can begin watching ad soon as you pay. And if you have a Smart TV you can have the Cineplex app, and you can rent at the touch of a button. Oh and to top it off, just like Tuesday is cheap night at the movies, Tuesdays are half price rentals too!! You can rent standard definition movies for like 2.50! We used to miss Blockbuster, but not since we discovered this 🙂

Thanks Talia! Even at half price those rentals are more than Redbox but I imagine they have a much wider selection, and the Scene points are a nice bonus. We’ll have to give it a go!

You’re very welcome. Yes, it is a bit pricey- 4.99 to 5.99 on regular days, but great selection and you can rent new releases same day they become available at stores. Plus- no rushing back to return on time. 🙂 Hope it works out for you.
