S&R Department Store in Kingston, Ontario Closing Down: Clearance Sale

Posted by & filed under Canadian Deals & Coupons.

S&R Kingston

I was very saddened to find out that S&R Department Store in Kingston, Ontario is closing down :-(

S&R is a local retailer that has been a part of Kingston’s downtown for over 50 years.  S&R symbolized the ability of smaller businesses and stores to survive the monstrous merciless national chains.

Although S&R was never a favourite store of mine, it had a dazzlingly unique style and character.  From the large creepy elevator that was operated by some strange (but very friendly) guy, to the shelves full of one of a kind items that may have been there for years; S&R was truly different. Almost everyone who’s lived in Kingston has a memory of S&R whether they’re local Kingstonians, Queen’s students and probably some Kingston Pen (light security) inmates. Although I endorse change and progress in life  I think some things should never disappear. I’m sad to see  S&R go and see 80 employees lose their jobs.

S&R will start its final closing clearance sale on Wednesday April 22nd, 2009.

Oh, that’s too bad! When I lived in Kingston, it was the only place I could still find Cracked Pepper crackers (I forget the brand), and they were really good! I bought a suit bag for my husband there during the first year that we were married. I hope that old building doesn’t get torn down.

I am sorry to hear this. I wonder why they are closing. This store was another thing that made Kingston unique.

Oh, this is so sad… I just got to visit it for the first time last September while visiting a friend in Kingston… I loved the store, and bought my baby her first pair of new shoes there… I really hope the building at least remains, it really is a part of the heritage of Kingston.… and quite a point of interest on the Trolly tour.…

I instantly thought of the elevator attendant. Lived on the army base there 20 years ago. Sad to see.

There is a commemorative event there from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 7th, just outside the store. There will be cake, balloons, music, short speeches, but mostly an opportunity to say thanks to the staff, and to celebrate what a unique and special place S&R was. Everyone is welcome! There are a few facebook pages about S&R for those who would like to lament or commiserate further.

I had my first sexual encounter at the store when I worked there during my Queen’s years… she ended up being my first wife. She wanted it twice a day in the girls changeroom.

Before all the BIG BOX stores this was IT! I visited my aunt and uncle every summer and we always made it into S&R. It is still in my brain 40 years later. W
