The Hudson’s Bay Canada Faces Pressure After #baycott of Ivanka Trump’s Line Heats Up

Ivanka Trump Hudson's Bay Baycott

Canadians all across the country are standing in solidarity with their neighbours to the south by vocalizing their boycott of Ivanka Trump’s clothing line through the hashtag #baycott. Customers have been calling for the Hudson’s Bay Company to remove the Ivanka Trump line from their stores for the past two weeks now in a show of support for the U.S. people that are being disproportionately affected by President Donald Trump’s policies.

People are also using this #baycott as an opportunity to speak out against Trump’s vulgar comments made towards women that objectify and degrade their existence, a message that does not in any way adhere with Canadian values.

The Hudson’s Bay, like many other retailers that sell President Donald Trump’s daughter’s line (T.J. Maxx, Lord & Taylor and Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH), are facing increasing pressure from the public to mix politics with business as they call for them to follow Nordstrom’s example of having the line removed from the store. In the past week, six other major retailers have decided to drop Ivanka’s brand.

A quick search reveals that the Hudson’s Bay sells over 350 different products from the Ivanka line, including dresses, shoes and jewellery.

Nordstrom was the first to remove Ivanka’s line from their stores, citing poor performance in the last two quarters as the motivation for removing the brand from their stores. Since President Donald Trump’s election, however, many retailers have come under increasing pressure to distance their association with any brands/businesses that are associated with the president and his controversial policies.

For instance, after the president announced a travel ban on seven-Muslim-majority countries to the U.S., people began using the #Deleteuber hashtag in protest of the company’s associations with President Donald Trump and his controversial immigration policies. This led to 200,000 accounts being deleted and the CEO, Travis Kalanick, stepping down from his position on Trump’s economic advisory council.

The #baycott social media protest has been gaining momentum since it first appeared on Twitter on January 30, 2017. And customers of the company are not holding back in their dismay:

Even dedicated customers are taking action to express their concerns at the company’s association with the Trump brand:

And with customers like this one, it will be interesting to see if the Hudson’s Bay decides to listen to their increasingly disgruntled customer base:

These people are morons. It’s a store, if you don’t like the brand, don’t buy it. If companies had to cater to everyone because all these snowflakes get offended by everything, they wouldn’t have anything to sell.

Everytime I see this, I have less and less respect for these groups.

  2. Maryanne says:

Should we all boycott u smartcanucks because we like her clothes and jewellery her brand should we do that just because you are being ignorant enough to post this stupid message against ivanka?

  3. Lynn says:

Maryanne: Smart Canucks are only reporting facts, things which are very real and happening. This article takes no sides.

I would not boycott HBC entirely. I just won’t buy any Trump merchandise and when the product don’t move, they products will be removed like Nordstrom did. People like to think that was political but it was more of a business move. it dovetailed nicely but the fact is the Trump name is so abhorrent to many people and refuse to contribute or be associated with it in any form.

    • John says:

Really, takes no sides? – “in a show of support for the U.S. people that are being disproportionately affected by President Donald Trump’s policies.

Most people who are anti-Trump are anti-White. I’m glad he’s pissing off the people that he is. Get use to Trump for 8 years.

  4. Susan says:

well I for one will buy her clothes and jewellery they are nice and fashionable and I’m glad the bay carries them. I work in a business setting and my girlfriends all agree that it is stupid to pick on Ivanka Trump she has every right to run her business and not be boycotted because of a bunch of racist thugs who want to pick on her!

  5. Jill says:

Who are you showing support for John illegal aliens or is people that need to be properly vetted if you want to support them then go to their countries and buy their clothes. What does that have to do with Ivanka you are just a foolish old man who wouldn’t probably wear her clothes anyway!

  6. sam says:

why doesn’t smartcanucks put tweets or comments up front of people who like and want to buy her clothes I’ll tell u why not it’s because they are biased otherwise they would put both sides! This is a shopping website not a political forum why incite people you should be fair give both viewpoints not just the ignorant viewpoint of the biased snowflakes.

  7. Norman says:

Either way, I’m not heading to Smartcanucks for my news. Please stick to deals and leave the editorializing to other sites.

  8. Lisa says:

I LOVE Ivanka Trump clothes, and I also highly respect Ivanka Trump! A savvy businesswoman with stylish, tasteful clothes for the working woman. We in Canada, are known for being very open minded, accepting, loving, tolerant. Why on earth are we condemning Ivanka for things that her father does/says? One does not have anything to do with the other. We are speaking out of both sides of our mouths by doing so. I would be disgusted if The Bay pulls her line for those reasons.

  9. Eve says:

Who r the ones causing all the trouble in U.S. Smashing store windows, burning cars, causing destruction is it ivanka? No it’s a bunch of racist bigots and you know who they r. Her stuff is nice why even suggest a boycott how rediculous do we cater to those who are racist? Can’t Canadians think for themselves or because there are racist bigots in U.S. We have to follow how dumb how pathetic to even suggest such a move.

  10. Jan says:

So glad that there are people standing up for Ivanka. She is a smart beautiful fashionable woman that many girls can look up to. I’ve since dropped Nordstrom for this BS political stance and I have no problem dropping the Bay or this site for that matter.

  11. Shanika says:

I think people r just jealous, she’s pretty, successful, stylish and some just can’t stand it so they try to destroy all the hard work and effort she has put into her business. Who wants to do that losers who don’t have a life and have nothing productive or useful to do. and those who say her dad helped her well I would hope so isn’t that what family does? Quit being ignorant and trying to ruin her, how would u like if someone did that to your business for no good reason.

  12. Moneytalks says:

    No !

No, to the VITRIOL, anti semitism, hate and intolerance of the american left; thoughtless zombies living with the fantasy they can also infect Canada with their vulgarity.

American liberals, the CLINTON JUGEND, burned down a Howard Schultz Starbucks at Berkley.

Didn’t take liberals very long to start coming for the Jews.

Now they’re coming for Ivanka because she’s married to an Orthodox Jew.

  13. Sara says:

I’m glad there are some sane people on this site. Stop with putting pressure on companies, it’s so hard to operate a business these days, I feel for the Bay.

  14. Ken says:

Maybe Ivanka Trump is actually just bad at fashion.

  15. Anonymous Canuck Regular says:

Really?? Do you think it’s a good idea to divide our community based on your lefty politics. Some of us stand in solidarity with the American people who elected Donald Trump. There is a whole other side to the story, not that you’ll ever hear about it on the mainstream media. If you want to politicize Smart Canucks, be ready for a counter boycott.

  16. Nikki says:

Since when do we believe in punishing individuals for the actions of their parents?
I enjoyed the politics free forum of smartcanucks but you guys just couldn’t help yourselves, could you?
Ive added Nordstrom to the list of retailers who won’t be getting my financial support , hopefully the bay won’t end up on that list too.

    • FallenPixels says:

In fairness, we do have a news forum with plenty of political discussion too. But it is easier to avoid than the main blog page

  17. Janie says:

Two thumbs up Nikki! I feel that Canadians are smart enough to make their own choices, if a person wishes to boycott Ivanka (or anything else for that matter) they can do it personally. If The Bay chooses to wade into this, I won’t be spending any more money there.
I also feel that by condemning her for actions of her father (whether anyone likes him or not) is hypocritical. The naysayers keep saying that he makes oppressive and sexist comments against women. Yet society is attacking his daughter instead of him? Or What about his two sons?

  18. Lisa says:

From the above comments, it is good to see that most SmartCanucks followers believe in freedom of choice.

  19. Dude says:

Hard to believe that you people are more concerned with the way you look than in the welfare of innocent people who are being affected by Trump’s racist policies. These people aren’t terrorists. Do some reading people- people are being targeted for their skin colour and religion. Ivanka and her husband are key advisers to The Donald, and the only thing that motivates their ilk is money. It’s ironic that Jerad Kushner’s grandmother was a refugee herself from Jewish persecution in Europe. And what about Trump’s attitude and policies toward women?

We Canadians have just seen one of the most heinous, racially motivated attacks that has occurred in our history, perpetrated by a Donald Trump admirer.

If the bay is smart they will do what is morally right and drop her products. The rest of you would be advised to start reading newspapers instead of Vogue.

    • Angela says:

Dude: No sir, I don’t even read vogue. What I do know is that these activists are being hypocritical…chastising his daughter for things that he has allegedly done. You preach inclusiveness, yet attack someone based on their family relations.

Look, I don’t agree with Mr. Trump, but here’s a reality about his Presidency–people voted him in. Democracy happened and that’s a foundation of our society..whether anyone likes the results or not.

I myself am an elected official. It is extremely common that we listen most to the people that yell the loudest; in this case the #baycott people. Those that are happy remain silent…which in this case is the majority of Canadians.

And ‘Dude’ you could atleast ‘own’ your comments and use your first name.

  20. Martha Corey says:

This is becoming similar to the Salem witch trials. The hysterical village must rid the Bay of the “devil’s influence.”

  21. Amanda says:

Don’t give into the pressure Hudson Bay. I think the bay will see an increase in sales if they keep the Ivanka line. It’s made me want to start shopping there. The Bay has really needed some press and an increase in sales. I think this just might help The Bay. The people calling for a boycott would never even shop their anyways.

  22. Anthony says:

Anyone who is against Trump is a complete moron. Anyone against Ivanka all the same. You losers lost and cant get over yourselves. You are the ones causing the division. You are the losers. Support the best president we’ve had in modern age. He will make the world great for the first time.
