I absolutely love these types of crafts. Theres nothing better then working on something like this on a rainy or too humid to go outside day. Even better is the kids can help out too (minus the glue gun). These are low cost presents to make, especially if you dig through your supplies and pull out odds and ends.
You will need:
*Glass Blocks (sold at Home Depot, Rona etc for around $6.)
*Glass or Diamond Drill Bit
*Strands of Christmas lights (25 or 50 per strand whatever colour sequence you have on hand)
*Wire Ribbon
*Decorations if desired (ie ornaments, fake cedar pieces, fake snow etc)
*Fabric Glue or Hot Glue
Drill 1” hole in back or bottom of glass block. Clean the inside of any debris. Carefully put lights into glass block, leaving enough cord and plug outside the hole.. (Use untwisted coat hanger to help position lights inside) Cut 2 ribbons to create frame of present and glue each at top to secure. Make top bow with 6-7 loops on each side, add decoration etc as you prefer.
Voila! You are done! These make great hostess, teacher, etc presents.
Tips:
*Different versions for weddings, baby showers etc.
*Make them with the blocks upright and lying down
*Use tissue paper to decorate the glass.
*Paint the glass in sheer colours
*Use Fabric paint to write words or sayings on the present
Be creative. Possibilites galore!
Thanks! This is wonderful idea!
Its a cute idea!
My sister is a teacher and I know she gets a lot of small presents that she would never use.
Sometimes the best present is a $5-$10 gift card to tim hortens! =)
These are pretty cute. I’d like to do them for decorations myself. 🙂
I have one here, and my friends and I are going through our reject Christmas stuff to make a whole bunch. They are quite lovely.
i knew a lady once who were selling the ones she made for like $20. ..i was meaning to try this myself as she told me how she did it. .
I have done these the last two Christmases thanks to a co-worker at work who has order blocks in blocks and prepared the drill holes. People love these and they look wonderful!
Last winter, Michaels had the smaller blocks with holes already drilled, for those who don’t want to work with glass and metal.
Definitely not tacky 🙂
I would love to make this but, would it be possible for you to post a video with the instructions.. step by step?
101 for Dummies.. Lol!
My hubby bought me one last Christmas that looks almost exactly like the one in your photo. Someone from his office was making and selling them for $20. I love it. I had to reglue the ribbon though as it came loose from the heat of the lights.
I’ve seen these glass blocks done before…where artists paint a scene or something on the surface, and with the lights glowing in the background, they look great for a holiday decoration, or a kids room (keep out of reach of kids of course), whatever your creative mind thinks up.
Very nice! I’ve seen them at craft shows for around $20-$25!!
Fantastic idea…definitely will have to make this craft idea.
Me: I’ve made these before and they were a big hit with the family – you don’t have to glue the ribbon on just tie it in an eight position bow, twist tie it and it will hold forever. Pine cones (with snow spray on top) with red and green multi-coloured wired ribbon looks great with white lights. You can also glue and stack them one on top of the other and they look great out on the porch posts in the winter – there are so many possibilities, just a little imagination and your off and crafting.
What a great idea! I go to craft sales all the time for ideas but have never seen these; I think I may have to try to make some this year. I like the porch post idea too.
