Remember the very successful Cash for Clunkers Program incentive in the US, where americans were offered $4,500 for their beaters? General Motors announced this past Wednesday that they are now offering this program to Canadian customers. This is a great opportunity to retire an old vehicle and save some money on a new one!
GM’s Cash for Clunkers program provides qualified customers who are accepted into the Federal Government’s “Retire Your Ride” program, with a rebate of $500, $1,000, $2,000 or $3,000 depending on their choice of GM vehicle. The GM rebate is used towards the purchase or finance of an eligible 2009 or 2010 GM vehicle and is in addition to the incentives available through “Retire Your Ride”, including a $300 reward. To qualify for GM’s Cash for Clunkers program, the retiring vehicle must be 1995 model year or older, in running condition, registered and properly insured for the last six months (12 months in B.C.).

Ford has the same program, in fact GM is copying ford
Who cares who copies who. You could say that Ford copied the United States program. I really don’t care, as long as I can get money for my car from someone. I have been waiting for this program!
Ummmm….cash for clunkers started in the United States…government incentive program…
Why is the incentive less in Canada when vehicles are way more expensive here? Infact, everything is more expensive!
Thanks Justine!
3300$ or 3000$???
4500?
Well, since the bail out “General Motors” should be renamed “Government Motors”.
I admit, I have not been on this webpage in a long time… however it was another joy to see It is such an important topic and ignored by so many, even professionals. I thank you to help making people more aware of possible issues.Great stuff as usual
“Cash for Clunkers” programs threaten enthusiasts nationwide with the loss of valuable parts and parts-cars for repair, restoration, and customization projects. The programs also risk destroying classic, historic and special-interest vehicles.
Cars turned in for scrap often barely run, or are rarely-driven second or third vehicles that have a minimal impact on overall fuel economy or emissions.
“Cash for Clunkers” programs will reduce the availability of affordable transportation and repair parts used by low-income drivers. It will also compete with the Salvation Army, The Kidney Foundation and other charities that rely on vehicle donations to raise money.
“Cash for Clunkers” ignores better policy options. If government wants to act, support for repair and upgrade is a better choice and a win-win for consumers, dealers, manufacturers and repair shops. Significant emissions and fuel economy improvements can be achieved in older vehicles through relatively simple and inexpensive means: repaired/replaced exhaust systems, tune-ups, etc.
“Cash for Clunkers” is a government sponsored car manufacturer/dealer “blind” to encourage people to buy NEW CARS. How many tonnes of pollution are produced each day manufacturing and transporting NEW CARS?
Not to forget the toxins off-gassing from plastic car parts and that “new car smell” – that new car smell, ladies and gentlemen, are toxins entering your bloodstream.
from this website here:http://www.3docs.org/InTheNews.html
“The air inside new cars contained high amounts of:
benzene: a chemical associated with causing cancer;
acetone: a chemical that irritates the mucosal lining in the nose, throat, lungs, and digestive tract;
ethylbenzene: a chemical considered to be a systemic toxic agent; and
xylene isomers: chemicals associated with increasing the likelihood of fetal abnormalities.”
So think again… Why is the government – who generally never have any inclination to help the public – suddenly wanting to give incentives for you to scrap your old car and buy a shiny new one?
Are there any car companies still offering a cash for clunkers program this April 2010 in Canada? If not does anyone know if it will come back some time soon? Thanks
You have some honest ideas here. I done a research on the issue and discovered most peoples will agree with your blog.
You you should edit the page name GM Canada: Cash For Clunkers Program – Save Up to $3300 on a New GM Vehicle! Canada to more suited for your webpage you make. I liked the post all the same.
@Gerald GM is still doing the cash for clunkers. I just bought a truck today and traded in my old ’92 with the cash for clunkers thing.
I know I’m a little late…sorry if you already had your question answered.
I dont understand why its only 1995 and older.. I have a 2004 tiburon which is pretty worthless right now and I’d love to get money for it..infact I’ve tried traiding it in and the dealerships dont even want it because of high KM.
