The government is hiking the cost of license plate sticker renewals as of September 1st, but you can renew up to 180 days in advance, so buy now to save.

The fees for one year renewals will be as follows:

  • Southern Ontario $108 (currently $98)
  • Northern Ontario $54 (currently $49)

There will be similar increases to the two year plate sticker renewal costs.  They will also be increasing prices for tests, so if you have been procrastinating about booking that driving test, now is the time to do it!

How many years in a row have they done this now? Crooks.

    • Ben says:

Nice of them to discriminate against those born late in the year.
“Get it early or get screwed Sept-December babies!”

      • Adam says:

Wow, read much? Says you can renew 180 days in advance. So explain to me how that is discriminatory?

  2. Andrew says:

Didn’t they just increase it earlier this year from $90 to $98? or was it last year?

  3. Sampler says:

This sucks! I bought a 2 yr last year, ..damnit! I should have bought a 1 yr so I can do this 🙁

  4. AMC says:

I didn’t know the stickers were cheaper in Northern Ontario. Just curious as to why? I am also assuming Northern Ontario doesn’t need an E-test…

    • Milton says:

change your address, by the sticker, change it back.

    • bonnie otto says:

only those that live in the 401 corridor need an e-test done every 2 years, but i don’t know why the stickers are so much cheaper in the north. hardly sounds fair does it ?

      • Chris says:

More highways in the south less in the north. The fee supposedly goes towards road repairs.

    • FallenPixels says:

I think it is because Northerners typically do not have the transit systems and drive further to stuff so have argued that a car is a necessity – no idea about the e-test

  5. Sampler says:

I was wrong, I can do this !!!

Does anyone know the difference in price for the 2 yr?

    • Terri D says:

There is no difference in money for a 1 year or 2 year sticker. They just add the 1 year twice for the 2 year…there is no saving

  6. Sampler says:

    nvm , I am guessing it should be 98X2 = 196 …..$216 on sept 1st (for the 2 yr)

  7. Sampler says:

Omg, they want me to do a drive clean test 🙁 ..my car is 7 yrs old, is this normal?

    • pettfan4343 says:

This is normal to require a drive clean test. I believe that every car needs to have one done after the first 2 years are up. When ever a vehicle is sold it also must have a new drive clean test done.

If your check engine light is one, if the battery has been disconnected in the last 30 days, to clear engine diagnostic codes, the repair shop will not be able to perform the test.

If I remember correctly the cost is $30 and only took 15 minutes to complete.

      • Sampler says:

        Thank you @ pettfan4343

      • Martin says:

Not true about the 30 days for the computer to reset. If you disconnect your battery it only takes about 2 hours of driving to reset the computer.

    • Diesel says:

If you live in or near Barrie Ontario the Midas Auto Service 221 Mapleview Dr West. The Drive Clean E-Test is FREE till August 31st and is valid for one year.

    • Nn89 says:

For the first 7 years you do not need a test if you sell it it has to be tested but the new owner would not have to test again until vehicle is 7 years old

  8. Pat says:

trying to make it so hard for ppl to even drive now pretty soon wont be able to effort to drive

  9. Theresa says:

Good ol liberals. Have to pay for bloated public service salaries somehow.

  10. Elly says:

Now I know where Liberals got their name, Because they are liberal with our money.

  11. RR says:

when is the government going to stop goudging the people of Ontario. Its only southern ontario you have to get an e-test done.Go to Clintion,Exeter area and there is no need for one. Why??? They forget their in power for the people not for their profit.

  12. Eve says:

Wow!!! license plates are so cheap in Ontario! I have to pay 258$ per year :S

  13. PF says:

Honestly!!! Where is the justification for this? Did the “super” glue increase with the manufacturer? Did the ink increase with the manufacturer? Did the glossy finish increase with the manufacturer? If they did…then renegotiate! Did the Ontario Government make a change to the process that increased the cost? Either way…I would like to see the numbers that will prove to me that this increase is necessary. But, sigh, I am also a realist and am leaning towards the fact that they just want to dig more out of our pockets. Unless they can prove it to me with sound numbers, they continue to be crooks in my eyes!

    • FallenPixels says:

Nothing to do with the cost of a sticker (which is probably way under a dollar), it just a tax towards roads and since it is the Liberals big policy to “fix” the road/congestion/transit issues, we will likely see more of these with the election at least 3 years away

  14. GorfLXIV says:

I really don’t think it is very fair for the Government to be charging us in Southern Ontario $ 108. and only charging $ 54. in Northern Ontario ! This is a cash grab in the most populated part of the Province ! Why should i pay for infrastructure in the North if they are not willing to pay it themselves ?! This Government has got to go !

  15. Bob says:

What a freaking money grab…all political theft of the consumer if u ask me

  16. John Bergen says:

I know it’s a money grab. I’ve tried to search anything one why exactly a sticker is required. Keep tabs on our vehicles I’m guessing but why so much is exactly the friggin point when we still have our other taxes coming off each pay check and all the things we buy. I gotta pay a tax twice on a vehicle I just purchased. Why? Kings and queens used to get assassinated for treating their ppl like this. Axe the liberal governor.

    • audrey says:

Not only did they do this to us, but they also claim they are giving us parents a break by giving us an extra payment at child tax credit time and making us pay taxes on it. I would like to tell them I do not want their money as now they are taxing ALL of our child tax credit which would mean that at the end of the year we are paying over 1200 in taxes for an extra 60 bucks a month. This government is corrupt

  17. Alison says:

We pay less in the north because we have less infrastructure. Come drive on our roads, you’ll see why.

  18. Peggy Roger says:

    Unsubscribe me from this

  19. Bree says:

Even better.. For those of you with summer babies. I had to pay an extra $100 this year to put my summer car on the road because this year they decided my e-test was needed immediately instead of on my birthday. As many of you may/may not know. You automatically fail an e-test when you pull a car out of storage because you can’t drive it enough to get the carbon out. So I had to pay for a temp tag and 2 e-tests … Or I could have risked getting caught & ticketed for hundreds of dollars with improper tags. What normally costs me a quick 10$ has now cost $100 …. And I have the same thing to look forward to in the fall . Talk about a money grab!!!!

  20. Linda says:

I remember when you paid according to whether your vehicle was 4, 6 or 8 cylinders…but then gas was also about .50 cents a gallon…oh those were the days.

  21. Deb says:

What the heck I just paid 98 to renew 3 months ago now I go to renew again 108$ boy very greedy shits !!!

  22. Frankie says:

That’s what you get when you vote Liberal, and even worse, give them a majority! Tax and spend, no accountability, reckless spending. more taxes and fees, scams galore! And not even a $2 Billion scandal, nor constant police investigations were enough to get them thrown out.

Remember folks, you voted for this and we deserve everything that the Liberals are going to do to us. Don’t forget the upcoming carbon taxes and your hydro bills going through the roof. keep voting Liberal and you’ll soon know what poverty feels like.
