Cora Sledge is horrified when her children, who doubt her ability to take care of herself, plot to remove her from her home. So what if her house is a shambles? Who cares when she last changed her clothes? If an eighty-two-year-old widow wants to live on junk food, pills, and cigarettes, hasn’t she earned the right? When her kids force her into The Palisades, an assisted living facility, Cora takes to her bed, planning to die as soon as possible. But life isn’t finished with her yet, not by a long shot.

Opera singer Sabine Conrad is the toast of nineteenth-century New York high society. A celebrated soprano with the voice of an angel, she is showered with adulation by her audiences and courted by wealthy patrons. But behind the scenes, her every move is controlled by a Svengali-like manager, Gideon Price. When her attempt to escape him goes tragically awry, she flees, leaving behind a grisly murder.

Take chocolate candy, add a family business at war with itself, and stir with an outsider’s perspective. This is the recipe for True Confections, the irresistible new novel by Katharine Weber, a writer whose work has won accolades from Iris Murdoch, Madeleine L’Engle, Wally Lamb, and Kate Atkinson, to name a few.

  7. Benita

I tried my luck and was able to submit a request for all three…but had to click on each link separately and enter my info in 3 different times. Hopefully, they’ll all come!

  8. Carlyn

  10. Athelia

Just wondering what company the book “The Charming Man” came from? I had a delivery (from Canpar) the week before Christmas that was sent back to the orginal sender, because I live in an apartment and they didn’t have my buzzer code. The notice was posted on the foyer in my building, but when I called the delivery company it had been sent back to the sender, and when I called them they couldn’t locate any info on what the item was, based on the order number. Any info anyone could provide would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Don’t know how you all are getting Freebies…I sign in — books, t-shirts, coupons.…you name it.…I’ve yet to receive anything. What gives? Each time, says my request is “successful”.…Hum Bug

  12. Andrea

Doris — try copying the link and opening it in a separate browser, instead of clicking on the link from smartcanucks.ca

Some freebie offers recognize if it’s coming from a “free stuff” website, and discount it.

If you copy and paste the link, it seems like you’re finding it all on your own.…

This charming man book was offered on the Chatline magazine website from Penguin book publishers. [I think you should call Chatlaine.. they never responded to my emails.. I sent almsot 20].

On the freebie front for someone.. ALWAYS right click any freebie link and “copy shortcut” [copying the link] and paste it into a new window. Most times the form/website can link back and find otu where you clicked the link from and if it’s from a freebie forum like SC they WON’T sent you anything and won’t tell you that.

Plus things take ALOT of time.. I joined in early september but been around as a lurker since late july and sending for freebies.. I didn’t start getting freebies until mid october.

Always have a dummy email account and a cellphone number if possible… makes spammy goodness less of a concern.

  14. anna warren

Thanks for this info! I also received the Charming Man just before Christmas. Love your website!

  19. Ladena

Oh no! I just clicked the link… I hope I still get them (even though I came from SC)

I got The Girls from Chatelaine a long time ago. Loved that freebie! I didn’t know they gave away another though… oh well, missed out I guess.

I hope I get these! Love books!

  20. mhk

Wow! First time I am ever ordering a free book! Hope they come. I ordered all three. I love to read.….

Just read Dr. Death by Jonathan Kellerman yesterday.

  21. Shoo

Kellerman is a good one. Have you read any of Lee Childs books? I think he’s pretty good too. I’m hoping the free book thing is legit b/c I love reading books and have little time to get to the library but buying books can get pretty expensive!

  22. sharp1

It takes awhile to get the books. I actually forgot that I ordered one the last time (The Charming Man).

  23. Trinh

Will this actually come? I ordered a while ago but still didn’t recieve anything.
