Sure some US TV shows make fun of Canada sometimes, but it’s usually in a fun lighthearted manner. This segment by FOX News however was not even close to being funny, and lacks any respect for the Canadian Military and Canadians in general.

That was totally disgusting and a complete and utter insult to Canadians. To me what it shows is their total ignorance and lack of knowledge. It boggles my mind that any news network would even want people like that to represent them!

It’s all about context, people. Red Eye is a comedy/news hybrid. It airs at 3 in the morning and really isn’t meant to be taken as more than a light hearted jab at what’s in the headlines. Comedian Doug Benson is on their panel that night for goodness sake. I’ve been a fan for awhile now, and knowing the show I’m not the least bit offended.
So if they were making fun of coloured people that would make it ok because its comedy?

If I went into the Legion and showed the Vets this and told them it was “comedy” I can assure you they wouldn’t be laughing.

Understood Sally, but on the flipside (to explain my point of view) I don’t think that humor necessarily has to be nice. It’s ok for people to be offended by things, but I just can’t understand why someone would be offended over humour. That’s just my take. There are some things that I don’t personally find funny because they hit too close to home, but I don’t think I’ve ever really found anything done in the spirit of comedy to be offensive.
I’m sure the families of soldiers who have been killed really appreciate seeing stuff like this. What a bunch of idiots Fox employs.
It just shows another ignorance among American culture. Regardless of comedy of not, I’m sure there will be plenty of “believers” among the viewers after this clip is aired. That’s the scariest part.

My husband is ex-Military, and knows first hand that even though Canadian forces are smaller in # than the USA, in his experiences on military excercises with the USA, Canadian troops kicked @ss, and furthermore, Canada does not have a War-Mongering Government.Whether in jest or not, the reason Canada doesn’t need a strong military power is because 1) it is a neutral country, and 2) we have world allies.
The USA needs to wake up to the fact that their US Government (not Obama to be fair to him) is one of the worse terrorists of the world, and maybe the US citizens should wake up and open their eyes to their governments propaganda and lies that they feed their citizens to fight in a war that never should have happened in the first place.

I think that this video is disgusting and shows a lack of intelligence that these people have. After all, the women mentions us up here in the cold, and some of their states are more North then some of us, and get more winter weather then we do. As for the Mounties and their pretty red jackets instead of bullet proof vests, has he ever watched the news from Canada? We have bullet proof vests also. The Mounties just don’t go around in their red jackets all of the time. My son is trying out to be a Mountie, and if he is one of the successful, I will be so proud to be the mother of a Mountie. I think its funny that they make fun of our military when it was them who started the war and and Chretien first said “we’re not supporting your war” to Bush. We end up sending troops to help them and they think its funny to make fun of our lack of military.

My opinion is outlined below in the email that I sent to this “newcast”.
I was sitting here watching a segment from your show RedEye in regards to the Canadian Military pulling out of Afghanistan. As a Canadian watching this with my American Husband, we both formulated the same opinion: Really bad Timing and in really bad taste my American Friends. As Canadians we are used to being made fun of from the International community because of our “polite demeaner” and most of the time we shrug it off, hell we make fun of ourselves (anyone remember Strange Brew?!) However, in a time when we are at war with a country who had no business invading at least Iraq in the first place, and where our soldiers are dieing in Iraq & Afghanistan, whether this was meant to be “funny” or not, it’s extremely disrespectful and a slap in the face to our great Men and Women who have lost their lives and continue to do so. There is a time and a place for everything, and unfortunately you missed the mark on this one.
I hope people realize that the opinions and vitriol spouted by Fox News does not represent the country as a whole. Fox News likes to ignorantly cause controversy in every way possible. It’s a shame that they’re even being branded as part of the “media” because they’re really just idiot mouthpieces who’ve had some other bigger idiots put mics and cameras in front of them. They’re all hypocrites and disingenuous liars.
Really before they start knocking a country they should really know what they are talking about. More then half of the comments are all based on the limited US knowledge of Canada in general. Ok…I posted my comments before reading everyone else’s and I think I was right – Jim Squires pointed out that this is gag show, like Stewart or Colbert, but not as funny (hence being on at 3am).
I agree with Tara F too – poor timing since there are more reports of dead soldiers, but let’s get real – they didn’t know that, they’re primary audience is not Canadian, and bottom line, they don’t care what Canadian audiences think.

I am a Canadian and have had the privilege of working with veterans, both young and old. The Americans (not all Americans) need to reminded of the sacrifices made by Canada in WWI, WWII, the Korean War, other special duty areas and all over the world. We have lost brave men and women throughout history and continue to do so. The death of our men and women and grief endured should not be valued more or less than the death of soldiers in other countries, including America. I am not offended that you outline our lack of equipment, etc. Those issues due need to be a top priority, but you need to read and equip yourself with knowledge of Canada’s role in Afghanistan. Ignorance can devalue any stations credibility. Aren’t the American’s planning on contributing more to this mission? Both Canadian and American troops will work side by side in this land; Reality is they will die together. Can’t we show a little respect for our soldiers and families on both sides of the border?

Last I checked people were allowed to have differing opinions without being some sort of secret agent. Unlike most people responding, I’m pretty familiar with the show and as such I’m not offended. I’m not saying it’s wrong for anyone else to be offended (like I said, people can have differing opinions) — I just think that before you make assumptions about the nature of Red Eye and start spouting out nonsense you should actually familiarize yourself with the program. I know comedy and when a joke is presented and nobody laughs I get the feeling it was not funny. So what was it? You could tell by the way the skit was going with all their nervous giggling that it was going badly and it was getting so very not funny…when that happens the next phase of the poor comedian is to get dirty and that is the level they went to. Invade Canada because they have no army? You tried that back in 1812 and got your butts kicked. The only significant battle that US forces won in that war was the Battle of New Orleans which was actually fought several weeks after a peace treaty had been signed in Europe. And even in this battle, your Old Hickory (was that a reference to his head) HA HA depended on the support of a French pirate and his men who betrayed the British. How’s that for an amusing play on Andy’s nickname?
Actually, when it comes to winning wars on your own, the only one you can lay claim to is your Civil War, which Americans of one side or the other pretty well had to win, didn’t they? lol In the Revolutionary War you had the French to help you. In the Spanish American War, you had the local indigenous populations to help you. Are you finding this amusing?
Hey did you hear this one…American called their soldiers in WWI Doughboys…lol. That was becasue they were “needed” in 1914 but never “rose” until 1918…get it?…lol. That was because You largely took a pass on World War One until it was three quarters over and then sent only a token force most of whom saw no action before the spring of 1918. Canada, by contrast put 10% of its entire population in uniform and these men were invariably given the most difficult objectives .You of course never heard of Vimy Ridge…before your time…lol. We lost 10,00 men Easter morning while you were looking for Easter Eggs…lol. And who were your great heroes? Eddie Rickenbacher who managed to shoot down a total of 26 enemy aircraft in about the same amount of time that the Canadian ace, Billy Bishop, shot down 72. Where did your guys learn to fly? lol Then there was that hillbilly hick from Bear Creek Hollow, Tennessee named Alvin York. What the hell kind of name is that for a soldier? Of course in World War Two you Americans jumped in in 1941. when it had only been going on since 1939, but you made up for it by taking all the credit. lol….ROFL… Did I mention that after the bombing of Pearl Harbour Canada declared war on Japan before the USA did..what kind of a system do you have in Washington…lol, Again, it was mainly the Canadian forces who took the brunt and who were given the toughest assignments in areas like the Italian campaign and at Normandy. Why do we never hear anything from Hollywood about what the Canadians achieved at Juno Beach, generally regarded by most historians, other than Americans,lol…lol… as a tougher objective than Utah or even Omaha Beaches? Why don’t you American know that the Canadian Division was held back from entering Rome on June 6, 1944 so that Georgie Patton’s ego could be satisfied,he just wanted Rome sooo bad…lol his ego and propensity for slapping soldier being his two most outstanding leadership qualities….lol… Are you bozos laughing yet….get over it,,,have a sense of humour,,,just some funny canadian thoughts on forgotten American Military history…lol? “But we Americans won the War in the Pacific,” I hear you saying. Yes, after the Australians and Chindits showed you how to defeat the Japanese at jungle warfare.
Unfortunately, those lessons in jungle warfare seemed to have been forgotten by the time you got to Vietnam where about the only things American troops did were drugs and young Vietnamese women. Isn’t this just hilarious?
And now you’re going to send an additional 17,000 troops to Afghanistan where, given your extremely limited success in Iraq (another war you don’t seem to be capable of winning), it’s just possible that the Canadian and other lesser UN forces there may feel they would be better off without. You Americans are just a laugh a minute! No wonder the rest of the world loves you so much!

Perhaps you may also consider a workshop offered for resume and cover letter writing (please remember to always send a cover letter along with a resume since the cover letter briefly expands on the resume) and/or interviewing skills. The local community college may have affordable workshops.
