Ikea Canada Safety Warning After Dresser Falls On Child!

Ikea Canada has had to reissue a warning for a third time after it was reported that a child was killed by a toppled dresser made by the Swedish furniture company. The dresser that fell over is the MALM dresser shown above. The boy, a 22 month old toddler, was found crushed under the dresser when his mother went into the bedroom to check up on him.

Ikea claims that the chest was not anchored to the wall properly as it should have been; instead, it was free standing making it easy for the child to topple it over. This isn’t the first time this happened: it occurred twice last summer when the dresser fell on two other young children.

For those who have the MALM dresser please make sure that it is properly anchored to the wall. If it isn’t, go to your local Ikea as the company is offering replacement anchoring kits.

That’s honestly dumb… and the people who this happens to must be equally dumb… why would you leave your toddler unattended… you must be the most inconsiderate parent to leave your child…

  2. Amira says:

I am very sad to hear this news. This must have been very hard for the parents to see their kids get hurt/killed by something. Very very sad.

  3. Christopher says:

This is why everything has to be anchored to the wall, ceiling, or where ever; all because of the parents, don’t watch.

Cars, Furniture etc all has to be suited for the few of the dummies that exist. In return most of the time the quality is downgraded because of a reason such as this. Same price, poor quality product.

This is why I would never buy Ikea furniture for my child’s room! Actually I read that the mom left her kid in the room alone for a nap when this happened, but something still sounds off. I have a 2 year old and even with his door closed, I can always hear him right away when he wakes up. I find it odd that the child woke up and was able to move around and open drawers and the mom still didn’t hear him. Where the heck was she? Parents need to pay more attention to their kids

  5. Vic Ng says:

    22 months..
    2.
    Your child is 2.

  6. CommonSenseRules says:

There’s no excuse for this parent… a 22 month old can’t wake up from bed and crawl all the way to the drawer then maliciously pull the drawer for it to drop on top of him… as someone said… common sense is no longer common sense… and it has nothing to do with being Ikea’s furniture or not… it could have happened with -insert name brand here- ‘s furniture… so stop criticizing Ikea

  7. Caitlyn says:

to Vic Ng: ummmm yes my child is 25 mths…..so he’s only 3 months older than this child. What is your point?? Not much of a difference in his behavior now and from when he was 22 mths lol

  8. KM says:

I agree with the others on this – I’m sorry but if you can’t install this piece of furniture properly, ESPECIALLY if you have small children, then it is no one’s fault but your own. Everything should be fastened to the wall properly

  9. Jenna says:

Yes, this could happen with any brand for sure. that’s why all furniture should be fastened to the wall. It’s not hard to do, and it’s a must as soon as your babies become mobile. but they said this is like the 3rd or 4th incident with Ikea dressers/shelves, so their furniture seems more accident prone and flimsy than others. I can definitely see that being true because their stuff is more low quality and cheap
