Today I write this as a very proud Canadian. We may have placed third in the 2014 Sochi Olympics but in my eyes Canada was the real winner this year. We showed the world how we’re a tightly knit yet diverse, open minded and accepting society who thrives on peace and love.
When Russia threatened the LGBT community we united to support gay rights. The Canadian institute of diversity and inclusion released an amazing response: “The games have always been a little gay. Let’s fight to keep them that way.” The Pride Flag was also flown at many city halls until the end of the Olympics.
Then we have touching moments. Bilodeau dedicating his gold medal to his brother who has cerebral palsy and seeing the two brothers grow together with their love unshaken from one olympics to the next.
Dufour-Lapointe sisters celebrating in style with their third sister.
When a coach for the Canadian team helped a Russian skier complete his Olympic race with dignity.
And we also saw the creative side of Canadians, like the the fridge that could only be accessed via a Canadian Passport.
And finally, seeing everyone wake up between 4am and 8am to cheer for Canada and seeing how empty the roads and highways were gave me a warm fuzzy feeling inside.
We are a wonderful country that is united on peace and love. I’m very proud to be Canadian.
Great post, Boo!
I’m not usually a fan of the Olympics, but I love how it’s brought our nation together this winter. We’ve performed wonderfully and we should all be very proud of our Canadian athletes.
We should also be very proud of the Russian people who put on an amazing Games and welcomed the world, including us Canadians with open arms and hearts.
With our acceptance and inclusion the Russian people who are much like us will grow.
lets fly a christian, jewish and muslim flag as well
@silentbob1 I didnt understand why we needed to fly the LGBT flag either.. has nothing to do with the olympics.
I completely agree . . .
This was a Western Ploy trying to ruin or discredit SOCHI, the Russian people and what they had accomplished along with many other SOCHI Facebook & Twitter FAILS and Blogs.
Well it didn’t work and the Games were SAFE and an amazing success won over by the warm and welcoming Russian people.
GO CANADA GO
Beautiful words! Go Canada Go!
Perfect post and I couldn’t agree more!
As for the flag @silentbob1 and @yuki, this is only my take, but if the Russian Gov had passed a law saying that just being a part of either of those groups illegal I would be all for flying those flags as well.
I think it was a nice way of saying we do not agree and it made me very happy to be Canadian.
Nice post to wrap up a nice Olympic experience. Congratulations to all the awesome athletes.
Thanks!
Your post truly made me smile and beam with pride, nicely done.
i wish i can share this on facebook..great article to start my monday..very heartfelt and heartwarming post
Thought Canadian atheletes had done great at the games! Although at times, I felt the Canadians were cheated. I thought the gold should have been given to Tessa and Scott instead of the Americans. I felt that their time on the ice was magical but to me the Americans’ felt mechinical. There was no way there was that much of a point difference unless there was so rigging by the judges along the way. I felt that way about Y. Kim. I thought that she should have been given the gold instead of the Russian. (And I am not Korean…)
Go Canada!!
