Just got word from the fine folks over at fjetsam (ok, that’s me) that the flagship Sam the Record Man store on Yonge St. will be closing its doors for good on June 30th. It’s a Canadian landmark, and an absolute shame to see it go.
Say it ain’t so. Sam, ever the friend of the local musician, who always had a BIG and PROMINENT rack of local indie discs for sale. Sam who always had there, in stock, any even really bizarre esoteric free-jazz you could imagine, or trad folk, or trad balinese free-jazz folk …

Was Sam’s first store on the north side of College just west of Spadina ? Did Sam himself not operate that store in 1944.
Operating as the All Night Record Men in Toronto for dances we played at the Collegiate Club mainly for west-end high school students out of the old Ramona Gardens.
Anyone remember ??

The all-night record men it’s from 1946 or 47
There is one name on a label it is Ben Inwood
