A Canadian Invention: The “Pook Toque” do you own one of these versatile hats?

Other / Canada

pook_toque

So apparently the Pook Toque has been out for a while but this is the first I’ve heard of it. Interestingly enough the inventors originate from St Mary’s Ontario, a quick jog from Stratford, (Justin Bieber’s stomping grounds) which is fairly close to where I reside.

Whats a Pook Toque? A sock hat that has many moods.

Click here to see the video from the Vancouver Olympics. Or click here for a quick run down from You Tube

So… what do you think of it? Would you buy one? Do you already own one? I must say the many moods of the Pook Toque cracked me right up, I can’t decide If I like the bowler style or the executive the best!

Interested in ordering one? They retail for $26 including shipping. Also available are childrens versions and scarves etc. Click here to check out their site

This is the first I have heard of this “toque”
Looks like rabbit ears, too goofy for me.

  2. Carsmoomy says:

I actually saw this on the Dragon’s Den a while back….I thought they were pretty cool…so many ways to wear it. I saw someone with it at RCSS around Christmas time…and I stopped her and asked her where she got it….she had gotten it as a gift…as she is a cancer patient…and hadn’t found a hat that kept her head warm until she was given this hat. I told her that it could be worn many different ways…she didn’t know and thought that was neat…she also told me I was the 3rd person to stop her in that store that day…apparantly I wasn’t the only one who saw it on the Dragons Den TV show.

  3. I would rather not see this one catch on…I think I may actually have to kill the first person I see wearing one of these some goofy way…j/k but seriously its like wearing tights on your head meh to each their own…

  4. Sally says:

Rose!!! What if its me sporting the executive style! You wouldn’t hurt a person wearing glasses would you?

  5. Klovett says:

I live in Stratford Ontario and I had no idea people from St Marys came up with these. I think the hat is ugly. Sometimes it is cute on little kids but adults actually wear them. It’s a sock rabbit hat, not a good idea.

  6. ThatguyRob says:

I like them actually! I see some people with them downtown. I’ve seen people spend much more on more stupid items

  7. abbasgirl says:

    fun…but I would never spend $26 on a hat.

  8. Justine says:

Startford is now known as Justin Bieber’s stomping ground..interesting.

  9. Natalka says:

I saw these on Dragon’s Den, too. Kinda cute!

  10. Laura says:

I definitely thought the hat had the use of some sort of long underwear…sounds like a good idea to wear when its cold out some toques don’t come down all the way to cover the ears but when some of them do there is little holes letting in all the air. Definitely someones strange invention almost look like someones crochet nightmare like they were going to crochet something else and came up with that…

But like the above poster I don’t think I would have paid 26$ for it…

  11. Christa says:

My Zellers sells these. I recognized them from Dragon’s Den.

  12. shejayd says:

    WOOLY SOCKS!

  13. anniecannie says:

I have one!!! YEPPERS!!! I have had one for about three to four years now way before it was $26. Anyway… it is the warmest hat EVER!!!!

  14. canadian_girl says:

My baby boy has one of these (the ‘Pookie Toquie’) and we get so many compliments on it. It’s reversible too, so you can flip the black inside outwards. And it can be tied something like 20 different ways. It’s fun. We love it!!

  15. sdab says:

The $26 isn’t so bad, since that price includes taxes and shipping charges.

I think this hat is rather adorable. Sure its goofy, but isn’t that rather the point of it?

  16. fan says:

I too saw this on Dragons. I think they are not very attractive,, faddish in fact. To much $$$$

  17. stuffedpandapuppet says:

I saw the real thing in Sears yesterday! I tried it on, and I have to say it looked good! That’s saying a lot because I usually look weird in toques. They also had different colour to represent the various NHL teams in Canada.
Not sure if they were selling it for $26, but they do have a 30% off sale of hats right now.

  18. Minou says:

From what I remember, the Dragons kind of thought the idea was limited as a novelty item, and weren’t all that interested. Anyone remember if one of them invested?

If they didn’t, I think it’s great that the idea turned out to be so successful! Hope the guys who designed the hat are making lots of money!

  19. Carsmoomy says:

Minou…no the Dragons didn’t invest in it…which I thought was a mistake…and if I could find out here in AB…I would buy one 🙂

  20. tnatywary says:

I have one for my six month old!

  21. Micwik says:

My family has four of the hats … Two red and white ones with a small Canadian flag on them … One in Vancuver Canuck colours and then one original style. We all love them and they actually look great on and are very comfortable. We having been wearing them in downtown Vancouver during the Olympics and are getting tins of compliments and people keep asking us where we got them. They hey have a stand set up and are charging $20.00.

  22. misty says:

One of my daycare kids has one!! She’s 3!

  23. dawn_sweety says:

I babysat a boy that has one of these…. I thought it looked really cute! I might not wear it myself but I could definitely see others wearing it.

  24. Sally says:

Justine, Justin Bieber is from Stratford, I used him because theres videos of him sporting the pook toque 😉 Stomping grounds is just kind of a silly way of saying were you hung out grew up etc.

    • Justine says:

I know what stomping ground means lol. I meant like of all the things stratford could be known for, it’s bieber? I think of stratford festival myself. 🙂

  25. Ciel says:

I would consider wearing one that did not look like grey work socks with an underwear band at the brim.

Fun fleece colours would be fine.

For little kids, I think parents would make sure they were always around active kids wearing those hats–the ears seems long enough to snag on playground equipment (like drawstrings from hooded jackets until some parents got that changed after some deaths).

  26. H123 says:

Does anyone know whether or not the Dragon’s invested in this? Just curious, I watch Dragon’s Den all the time, but must have missed this one. Thanks!

  27. mlongboat says:

Me and the kids saw a little boy wearing one when we were in walmart. I pointed it out to my 3y.o. daughter thinking she would think it was funny/cute. She replied “Mum hes wearing sock on his head.” What a diva:(

  28. Michael says:

that is retarded a sock on ur head? but people will probably buy them cause people are stupid 🙂

  29. Jessica says:

I saw them on Dragon’s Den and think they are great! I want the “Pookie Toquie’ for my kids. I heard they are in Vancouver selling them during the Olympics!

  30. socksR4feet says:

I too saw these on Dragon’s Den. The inventors seemed like a couple of really cocky guys who were sure they were on to the next Canadian symbol.
I wouldn’t wear one of these if you paid me, and at $26 a pop, I doubt that is part of their business plan.
You may as well be wearing a dunce cap.

  31. samantha says:

they had a mall cart at Southcentre mall in Calgary selling these….personally not thanks!

  32. 7mountains says:

I too saw them on Dragon’s Den, way to go Canucks!!! I will not be purchasing one of these though. I do hope the “inventors” make lots of Canuck Bucks on them!!

  33. Isabel says:

We have one! Bought it at a Craft Show. My daughter has knotted the “ears” and loves it!

  34. Jackie says:

I don’t get the appeal. It is ugly… no? Why are people wearing these? Surely there are cheaper alternatives that are not only warm but better looking.

  35. poohbear2973 says:

    interesting.
They could make a killing if they got someone from Hollywood to wear one. Or wear it on a popular TV show. Maybe someone from The Hills or Gossip Girl or even The Office. Actually it would be pretty funny to see someone from LOST sport one of these on the island.

  36. Julie Leeds says:

I like them! ya, they are a fad, that’s the point! My mom could knit hats for probably a buck a piece, but because they are cheap doesn’t mean people want them either. a few years ago all the kids had jester type hats, last year it was hats with ear flaps or some damn thing. Just because it has to be practical doesn’t mean it needs to be boring. live a little!!

  37. Sally says:

Thats the name of them Julie! The jester hats! In the early 90’s these were a HUGE fad for kids my sisters age! Everyone had one… they were bright colourful and absolutely ridiculous.

  38. Adeola says:

i own one! i bought it in a mall in edmonton when i went there to visit this past christmas, i was particulary amazed at its gofyness and uniqness since thats kinda who i am. i did get some stares at a walmart when i wore it there.
but i only wore it once, since it doesnt really go with some of my outfits’plus i dont wear hats much
but definetly cute..my family thought it was silly when they saw it on me too..lol

  39. rob says:

Perhaps a fad, but expensive and goofy looking? Most teenagers I know pay much more for a baseball hat, which they insist on wearing sideways, which is sold by an American company, and is manufactured overseas by underpaid workers. I may not buy one, but I support their creativity and initiative.

  40. Valerie says:

Gosh! Didn’t two Americans “invent” “the boxer that you wear on your head” 10 years ago or so?

I’ve been wearing my kids’ PJ bottom to amusing effect at home for… laughs! I had no idea that I was this close to a marketing idea!

How about we get adults wearing more distinguish clothing for a change?

  41. lalita1985 says:

I think I just might have to get two of these one each for my niece and nephew!! I know they’re silly and I personally wouldn’t wear one but I think they would be adorable on kids!!

  42. mist_ynight says:

I was just on their website and they have one without the ears too. It’s called the pook touqe II. I think they are cute, I doubt I could pull it off but I might buy one for my godson.

  43. luluada says:

I saw these guys on Dragons Den and I was at the Bay downtown in Vancouver and the inventor was actually there demonstrating the hat… lol.. I got it on camera. But I would never buy it.

  44. Sally says:

OOOOOOh hahah! I wasn’t sure what you meant. I simply used him because hes on the main page of the Pook Toques site 😉
I love the Stratford Festival. I have front row seats already purchased for June to see Evita. I am stoked! Theres a few more shows I’d like to see as well.

  45. mona says:

i think it would look cute on little kids but wouldn’t pay $26 bucks for it, the colors and fabric are actually a nice combination. yes it’s trendy but most accessories are, and really if you don’t like it then too bad it’s out there. hope the canucks make money out of it.

  46. kerry says:

Maybe someone looking for attention or a hockey fan might wear it to a game, but I think its very dorky…

  47. James says:

I own one of these toques. They are fantastic. Not only are they fun but really warm. I purchased mine at the Toronto One of a Kind show in 2009. They were there the year before too. At the show, they were only $20. Personally, I think the Olympians should be wearing these toques instead of the HBC ones…

  48. Sally says:

    Thats awesome James!

  49. Grace says:

None of the Dragons Den venture capitalists “bit” on this one. Before Christmas in Edmonton, there were at least two stores: One in Kingsway Mall (not sure of the size), and a store in City Centre. Both closed fairly shortly after opening.

They had the toque, mittens, and a few Edmonton-Oilers-colour-scheme version of the toque. All items were $20.

The hats were cute, with microfleece inside, but I already had a nice toque. The mittens looked too fragile, because the sock fabric on the outside looked kind of thin and easily [rippable?].

  50. Tony Pook says:

Hello, Tony Pook of Pook Toques here. Really enjoyed these replies! haha

  51. Sally says:

    Hi Tony!

  52. tjg says:

The whole family got them for gifts last Christmas. They are extremely warm.

  53. Krista says:

My whole family has a pook toque or hockey sockey…and we love them. People stop us all the time to compliment the hats or ask were we got them.
The toques are the warmest, most comfortable hat I have ever owned.
I think the price is very reasonable when you consider the fact that shipping and taxes are included in the twenty six dollars.
Even more so is the value of a hockey sockey, when you consider the over price of NHL gear.
    I think Pook rocks!

  54. Heather of St. Marys says:

First of all St. Marys does not have an apostrophe….

These are the warmest hat/mitts/scarf you will ever wear. A unique fun set. If you are too cheep to spend the $6 on shipping ….get one at the store, Zellers, The Bay, McCully Hill Farm outside of St. Marys.
They’re brilliant and make fantastic gifts. Whoever said the mitts were fragile…do you own a pair? They are not fragile.
Way to go Tony and Kevin!

    • Cindy Vanstone says:

Great job Kevin I baby the MuCully boys I am proud to say my grandkids all have one and ware them all winter long best hats ever

  55. Jordan says:

I think they are absolutely rediculous looking… But I want one! Hahaha. The silliness of them is what would make them fun to wear. I’m sure I could get a laugh from my four year old daughter with some of the styles, and that would make it worth the money. It’s just too bad that I can’t access their website from my black berry. All that come up is a blank black screen. Does this mean they’re not in business anymore? Is there another way to get a Pook Toque?

  56. Willie Aitkenhead says:

Definitely still available, I have one and it is without doubt the warmest hat I have ever had

    http://www.pook.ca/

  57. Jennifer says:

My son has one in his favourite hockey colours and LOVES it! He is now in his second year of wearing it (8 1/2 yrs old) and still in great shape with lots more room to grow, but fits perfect right now too. What more could a mom ask for than a fun hat a kid wants to wear, that they won’t grow out of every year, and that only costs $26 with shipping?? Love seeing our kids running around local rinks wearing these!

  58. Isabella says:

I once owned 1 of these cool hats, but i think it got put in the lost and found because i accidentally left it at my school and now im pretty sure its got stolen by a jealous person who wanted a hat like mine. THEY SHOULD OF THOUGHT OF HOW I FELT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙁 🙁 🙁

  59. Cindy says:

Way to go Kevin I baby sat the MuCully boys and I am proud to say my grandkids ware The pook hats they love it and very warm
