OUYA Game Console is on sale at Amazon.ca for $69.99 down from $99.99 and shipping is FREE. WOW! I’m finally personally pulling the trigger on this purchase! If you don’t know what OUYA is, it’s a game platform that was made to support independent game developers. It’s gotten a lot of heat and controversy over the past year. The company had promised to make the platform open so that anyone can modify the console (kind of like Android) but lied and kept it closed. This upset a lot of people since it turned it into another commercial console just like Xbox and Playstation. But what you need to know is that this console is AMAZING for playing old games. If you want to play emulated Nintendo Entertainment System NES, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Sega games, etc. this is the perfect console for you! The games run very smoothly and almost every old game can be downloaded via torrents and easily installed onto the system. It’s could also be used as an awesome Home media centre. You can install the absolutely free XMBC Home Media Centre to play your downloaded videos, movies, etc. The XMBC interface is very elegant and feels like a hotel on demand system except much better. Oh and you can run Netflix on it. As for the independent developer games, some are good but unfortunately Xbox and Playstation are still leagues ahead.

I’m personally buying this console and using it for all my retro gaming nights with friends. It’s nice being able to load Super Mario, Rockman, Street Fighter and the original Sonic games without having to be too tech savvy and running complex PC emulators.

One more thing to keep in mind is that the price drop is probably due to OUYA 2 coming out soon. I wouldn’t worry about this too much though since when it does come out, it won’t be anything close to $69.99.
