AOL Canada Satellite Radio: Free & No Commercials

I got an email from Michelle H. who represents AOL Canada. They are launching a new Canadian satellite radio service at no cost. She wants to get our feedback about this service. If you have any suggestions or ideas about it please leave a comment below for Michelle to read. Here is what she said in her email:

So we haven’t officially announced this yet, but I wanted to let you (and your readers) know about the new AOL Radio on aol.ca/radio –check this out… 170+ stations (everything from Indie to TV Tunes to Awesome 80s), no commercials (– ever!), CD-quality sound, streaming 24/7/365, always, always free. This is a Canadian exclusive – in the U.S., you have to pay to get full access to AOL Radio. You can check it out by going to aol.ca/radio (make sure you go to .ca to get the Canadian version).

We’d looove to get your feedback –what do you like? What do you want to see more of? etc.. AOL will be adding new stations all the time, and we’ll be paying close attention to feedback from online communities like SmartCanucks for ideas.

Michelle, I wonder how AOL will make any profit if this service is free and has no commercials?

Hehe.. you’re not the first one to ask that.. so the whole idea is that ‘user experience is everything’ –there are banner ads on the player, and you’ll see them when you’re picking stations or checking out the name of the song that’s playing (or the songs that are coming up). While you’re listening, though, the window stays minimized, so you’re not botherd by the ads. Hope that explains it…

This is great! Thanks for the tip. I’m planning out my X-mas shopping list (I can’t believe it’s that season already!) and listening to the pop holiday station.

Talk about getting into the spirit of the season!

It is great to see that AOL Canada is launching something seperate from the US!

I went to the site, but the plugin that I’m being asked to install isnt’ working…

Hopefully this service will last longer then their attempt at VOIP 🙂

Michelle, I’ve been listening to the AOL Canada radio channels for 2 days now and I’m very impressed with the songs selection and quality.

    Good job 🙂

I have a question… is there a way of skipping a song and forwarding to the next song?

I also suggest you charge a little less than iTunes for your downloads.

Glad you’re enjoying! A little confession.. I’ve developed somewhat of an obsession for the One-Hit-Wonders station.. 🙂

No skip functionality yet, but I’m passing that request to the guys who make things happen over at AOL -great suggestion, btw! –although, we’ve found a fun benefit to simul-play (is that a word?? hehe).. if you turn on 2 computers to the same station, you’ll get a surround sound ‘party system’ -great for house/office parties

CD/download pricing and sales are done through Puretracks
