Brits Stop Grabbing Jugs and Copy us Canadians by Embracing Milk Bags

Bagged Milk UK

Bagged milk was uniquely Canadian… until sometime of this  year! It looks like brits are moving from milk in jugs to bagged milk! I get a feeling the Queen stole this idea from us while she was visiting in july!

I’m from Israel and bagged milk is something that I remember from over 15 years ago as a household item… not sure when Canada picked up the trend but this is definitely not uniquely Canadian..

  2. sujan says:

I am from India and bagged milk is like more than 30 years old thing….I have seen them ever since I could recognise it as milk !!!!

I am sure someone from India can second what I wrote !!!!!

Wonder from when did Canada pick up the the trend !!!!

  3. Sue says:

When I was a kid – over 30 years ago, probably closer to 35 years ago – and lived in BC we had bagged milk. Then it just disappeared and it isn’t available there or in Alberta anymore. I found it was a bit of a pain but would give it a try again if they brought it back out here in the west.

  4. Michelle says:

Milk in bags has been around in Canada (specifically Ontario) since 1967.

  5. ca5macdo says:

My friend and I once found this site as a tribute to the milk bag:
    http://home.cogeco.ca/~husky66/Milk/
… We were a tad bored at the time

  6. samantha says:

I never see bagged milk here in Alberta!

  7. temp41 says:

Grocery stores charge a nickle per plastic bag so they can been seen as “Environmentally Friendly”.
Perhaps being “uniquely Canadian” isn’t all the it’s cracked up to be when it comes to the plastic milk bags in the garbage dump.

  8. karen says:

i’ve never once seen bagged milk here in BC. you CAN, however, get bagged milk across the border in washington.

    great article research!

  9. Shadyman says:

@temp41: Versus milk jugs in the garbage dump?

  10. temp41 says:

Shady : Versus milk jugs in recycle bin.

  11. Katey says:

I grew up in the UK and we always had bagged milk in the 70s when I was little. The milkman even delivered it. It’s not that new a concept, nor strictly Canadian.

  12. Michael says:

ive never ever seen milk in a bag other than that old powdered milk where u added water.. yuck

  13. Cheap says:

Are jugs more environmentally friendly as opposed to plastic milk bags?

Are jugs easier to clean and recycle as opposed to plastic milk bags?

  14. fanofearl says:

As far as I’m concerned, the UK and anywhere else that wants the bagged milk can have it…..I’m an Ontario bagged milk hater. I genuinely think that the milk simply evaporates from the bag so that every time I go to the fridge, it seems to have nothing more than the tiniest drop left in it (or could that be the other residents of my house?). Nah, must be just my imagination…..but sell me a jug any day (and I’ll be sure to reuse or recycle it).

  15. Katey says:

I say put milk back in glass bottles! At least they’re fully recyclable. Plus, when those bags split you don’t want to be the one on clean up duty.:)

  16. Eva C says:

Yes Katey I agree milk is best in glass bottles 🙂 And it tastes much better when you drink it from a glass vs a coffee mug or a carton!! 🙂

  17. Alee142010 says:

I live in BC and I have never seen a milk bag here… I belive I remember my Dad saying that milk was bagged in austrailia… Hmm I wonder if BC will ever re-start useing the bags instead of the jugs….

  18. samantha says:

ooh yes, I also grew up in the UK and the CO-OP or Unigate milk that was delivered in milk bottles had about an inch or so of cream on the top, the BEST thing to have on your cereal!

  19. dealsniffer says:

Milk comes in a bag??? this is totally news to me. I am in Alberta though and people said already that milk bags are not in BC or Alberta. It can’t really be Canadian if it is not in all of Canada. just my thoughts on this. milk in a glass bottle could be neat but glass shatters when it drops where the jug just splits. Either way there is milk to clean up but with plastic it doesn’t have shards of glass in it. just another thought.

  20. Crystal C says:

We had milk in bags in BC until the mid to late 80’s, since then there’s only been jugs. The jugs are easy to rinse and recycle so I’d probably sit on the side of the fence where they served milk in jugs! IMHO

  21. Crystal C says:

They used to have milk in bags in BC until the mid to late 80’s. Since then it’s only been sold in jugs. The jugs are easy to rinse and recycle so I’d probably sit on the side of the fence where they served milk in jugs! IMHO

  22. Litesandsirens911 says:

Unfortunately, bagged milk is not available in BC where I live..I have never seen it here since moving here in 1988…

  23. Angie says:

Growing up in BC we always had bagged milk. What a PITA! Those bloody things would burst or leak. So glad to have the plastic jugs – which I recycle EVERY single time.

  24. sharicat 88 says:

I’m in Ontario and all we know is milk in the bags and 1 or 2 litre cartons. If you want to buy milk in a jug you go to Macks or beckers I think beckers is still around and pay a 25cents deposit for the plastic jug. When you return the jug you get your 25 cents back. I use the large milk bag that holds the smaller bags for kitty litter after cleaning out the litter boxes as well as my son’s stinky diapers. If not I will throw them in the blue box and treat them as recycled plastic. They are very heavy duty plastic and I’m sure come in handy for any other uses as long as the milk hasn’t leaked into the bag. Alot of people I’m sure just throw them in the garbage. What a waste. Lately people up at our mailbox are collecting milk bags for making mats for third world countries. They are so neat and look like a regular wool carpet but are made of plastic soooo cool and for a great cause for people to have a waterproof mat to sleep on when they have nothing.

    LOVE THE TITLE BOO!!!

  26. colleen says:

I’ve lived in many provinces in this country and am pretty sure bagged milk is an Ontario only thing. I’ve just recently moved here from Alberta and I can’t stand bagged milk. My family drinks about 16L’s of milk a week, that’s 4 jugs or 12 smaller bags of milk. I can easily store the jugs but can’t find a way to store the bags without them falling over.
I’m all for cutting down on the amount of plastics we use but I can’t bring myself to use bagged milk.

  27. V says:

#8 and #18 — you must be young to not remember milk bags in BC. That, in turn, makes me feel really old (and I’m 32).

I remember talking to my husband about milk bags a few years back when we tried being a little greener when we shopped. We both remembered buying milk bags and having to put them into those pitchers. Ahh.. the good ol’ days… I’m wondering if they’ll bring them back one day?

  28. Natalie says:

We don’t have bagged milk here in SK now, but I remember it for a short time growing up in the late ’60s, but it was just a 1/2 gallon, that fit in this cute little plastic pitcher.
For Albertans, you must be ‘young’ because there was indeed milk in bags there – at least in Edmonton when we would go visit my sister, they had milk in bags.
We now buy the 4L plastic jugs, because my son and husband go through milk; I don’t drink it, just use it for cooking. But I dislike pouring from it, as I have weak hands… I miss just having a smaller carton.

  29. Dean says:

I’m a little confused… this is a web site about deals and coupons, this just looks like an ad for milk in the UK.
    Where is the “deal” here?

  30. Sally says:

Dean, your incorrect. Sc Bloggers for years have blogged about random things and had fun. Thats why theres an “other category as listed below his post. Its nice to joke around and have fun sometimes 🙂

  31. izikavazo says:

70 YEARS AGO… I remember having bagged milk in Istanbul!!! How now? You thought guys you were so special.
But really, I’ve only met one person in BC who used milk bags. It was weird.

  32. charliechan says:

I’m approaching 30 years old in Winnipeg and do remember getting milk in glass bottles delivered to the house when I was young. They then switched it to cartons, I’m not sure when, but now it’s all 500ml – 2L in cartons and 2L – 4L in plastic jugs. The jugs are best because they are resealable, the cartons are sorta resealable.

  33. coupondiva says:

I’m in Newfoundland & we only have cartons here; no bags & no jugs. I do remember in the late 80’s they had bags & gave everyone those little pitchers with the slit in them, but I guess they didn’t catch on. Oh well, I prefer the cartons!

Although, the glass would be the best–everything tastes better stored in glass & there’s no worry about the chemicals in plastic bags/cartons.

    denise 🙂

  34. nunu says:

We’ve had bagged milk in South Africa for at least…30 years. Definitely not a uniquely Canadian thing.
On the contrary, I have never seen bagged milk in BC.
I miss the days when you put out your money and an empty milk bottle outside your house and the milk man delivers you a cold bottle of fresh milk in the morning.

  35. Catherine L says:

It seems that bagged milk is not sold on either the west or east coast of the country as several have commented that they can’t buy it in BC and I can’t buy it here in NL either. I would be happy with jugs, but not the bags. I don’t like the way it is currently here in cartons either. They often leak and the cartons can be damaged so easily in transport.

  36. Kerri says:

When I was a girl guide, we used to put newspapers in the larger bag that holds the smaller bags and make “sit-upons”. My sister likes the larger bags for cleaning up dog poop.

We lived in Ecuador a few years ago and they have bags too.

  37. Alice says:

Wonder why bag milk is not available in the 1l size?

  38. milk says:

Canadian? Huh? Bagged milk is all over Europe! I however always bought the carton ones.

  39. Leia says:

I would say B.C. had it until at least the early 90’s. I’m 24, and I remember seeing bagged milk in the store.

  40. Sally says:

Bagged milk is not exactly uniquely Canadian, but uniquely Ontario. Wish others would follow – but Saskatchewan is so far behind the times they don’t even have recycling programs yet.

  41. couponfreak says:

There use to be bagged Milk in Alberta circa mid to late 80’s.

  42. not uniquely Ontarian says:

Bagged milk is not only in Ontario. It is also common practice in Quebec.

  43. Shari says:

As a kid I remember milk in bags while living in BC. Then came the wonderful jugs! I’ve lived in Ontario for the last couple of years and continue to hate the bags. I would be so happy if the jugs would come to Ontario!
