Do you need to be a member of their irewards program to use this coupon or is it open for anyone to use?

  2. Carol says:

Why are on-line prices cheaper than in-store prices, i.e. in-store prices of books are based on the cover price? Is it because of the on-line competition between Amazon and Chapters? We have to pay the cover price at the store just for the privilege of having the book on the spot and not having to wait for delivery, is that it?

  3. Jayne300 says:

Carol, the difference is that there is no retail overhead involved at a website. In a store, you’re paying rent or a mortgage, utilities and staff to make the sales and keep everything clean and tidy. Online, you only have a warehouse (cheaper rent) and less staff picking and packing orders. Yes, the competition between Amazon and Chapters is a factor, but the rest is really simple business fundamentals.

I’m done with Chapters after the $5 off coupon debacle. Lame! Amazon is usually cheaper, and free shipping over $39.

  5. Carol says:

    Thanks Jayne.

I still don’t get why people would buy at the stores (and I often do see line-ups at the cashiers) when they can get the same stuff a lot cheaper on-line for a bit of deliver wait time – and free delivery if the purchase total is over $39. Some people just don’t like saving money?

  6. jackie says:

It seems that most people would choose immediate gratification over saving money. As a tightwad, I’ve never understood this. 😛

  7. Mel says:

Carol – I think some people (even today) are still hesitant to shop online.

  8. Cam says:

In addition to Mel’s comment, there are some people who simply like that person-to-person interaction. We’re all internet-savvy, price-conscious consumers, but that’s not to say that there aren’t still people out there who can’t work a computer and wouldn’t mind forking over the extra cash for one-on-one customer service.

Also, some people like to look through the book before making a purchase, and after immediately reading through the book they may want the book right then and there.

  9. Nice Sass says:

In addition, Indigo and Chapters stores carry things in the gift section that they don’t have online (I love the home and office organization products), so I shop in-store to check out new offers in this department.

Additionally, buying in-store means I am supporting local businesses (and therefore local employment), instead of sending my money to the GTA and eventually contributing to putting local workers out of business.

  10. cookymama says:

hahaha. why are yall bashing chapters

  11. Brian says:

Chapters has a great online bookstore and a nice used section. I use them quite a bit but the books take a while to arrive. On average, I get my books 6 to 8 weeks after placing the order. By the time I receive them, I forget which books are supposed to come, their versions and the condition that they promised that the books would be in.

  12. Trevor says:

Why are Canadian prices for books so much higher than the same book in the US? Just compare any book at Amazon.ca vs Amazon.com and you will see a 50% to 200% price increase on the .ca site. Ridiculous. That is why I will continue to shop at American sites.
