Canadian Discussion: Tim Hortons to raise prices next week

080729_tim_hortons_3202

Starting April 11th Tim Horton’s will be raising their prices. A large coffee is expected to go up by 7 cents. Specific pricing has not been announced yet, however this increase has been pending since February.

Factors:

  • Cost of sugar has increased 40%
  • Cost of wheat has DOUBLED in the last year
  • Wholesale coffee prices have DOUBLED in the last year

What are your thoughts about this? Personally I’m a McDonalds coffee girl so it won’t affect me but I see the lineups in the Tim’s parking lots every morning on my way to work and know that lots of people will probably be unhappy!

  1. Peppermint Patty says:

It’s justified. Let’s not forget the cost of transport. Gas is $1.39.4 here today.

  2. Sammmmmmm says:

I this that it is justified as well, and the increase is not ridiculous.

  3. Lennea says:

I like their Chai tea and their mark up on tea is pretty big. I wonder if it will go up too.

  4. itsjustmebub says:

i wonder personally how it will affect things like the iced cappuccino … which although HORRIBLE for you is oh so delicious.

  5. caroman says:

they increase their prices evey once in awhile just like anybody. the only differance is that they let people know before hand, good business sense.

  6. FallenPixels says:

It seems to be in line with the price increases on everything else so I won’t complain too much but it would be nice if they did release the prices ahead of time, I know so many people who have their exact change ready when paying

  7. Redz says:

Saw the notice this morning at Timmies while I got my tea. The price increase is necessary due to the rising cost of sugar, wheat ect. However, I have cut back my consuption of Timmies after the last price increase. I only give myself XX amount of dollars to spend and once its gone its gone. Therefore, depending on how much the increase goes up will depend on how often I will get my tea starting monday.

  8. itsjustmebub says:

    that’s a good idea Redz
most people waste SO much money on coffee/pastries every month

  9. Terri says:

McDonalds has great coffee for less than Tim Hortons. The size is a bit larger and the lids are better too.

  10. Lily says:

Justified. Price increase is part of business. It is better that they keep following the market and do little increase rather then wait and do a big increase in prices when they are in trouble.

  11. jo says:

everything is going up i’m afraid not just coffee. i try to bring mine from home when i can.

  12. temp41 says:

Probably a minimum wage increase coming too. Tim just passing along the cost of doing business.

  13. Mark says:

Gotta keep those profit margins up! lol…

  14. LARRY says:

DON’T BE SO BLOODY LAZY MAKE YOUR OWN COFFE STOP DRINKING THOSE FAT COFFES THEN YOU WON’T BE SO FAT WHAT A LAZY SOCIETY LOL HAGD

  15. Theresa says:

    Larry, settle down!

  16. kris says:

I think that them raising the prices because of sugar is funny because 3/4 of the time they don’t even add the sugar to my coffee when i do go there!

  17. j says:

i work at tim hortons, and because everything is going up in price i don’t see how it’s unfair to charge more, it’s not like they’re necessariy making more money due to the raise. smaller coffee shops may increase their prices too, and i dont think i’ll see anyone complaining then because they’re not a big corporation

  18. Peppermint Patty says:

Too many Red Bulls today Larry?

  19. T.M. says:

I highly recommend buying a Tassimo or Keurig machine. Better coffee and shorter wait time! A great investment for this household. 🙂

  20. Moi says:

    I love Tim’s…..cost of living……yeah well
I don’t buy Tim’s everyday so all good
PS….they are soon to be changing their lids. Like the ones Starbucks has:)
    Awesome! I hate Tim’s lids:(

  21. atashi says:

I think it’s justified as well. It won’t affect me at all though since I probably go there twice a month? =) I love my home made chinese tea.

  22. Jen says:

I generally make my own coffee and tea at home. I rarely go out for a hot drink. I probably wouldn’t notice the price change… That being said, I have gone to McDonalds the past few times, because I can get a muffin and small coffee for $1.39.

  23. Stephania says:

Not sure how much it went up, as I don’t frequent Timmy’s, but the last time I got a medium double-double (for Roll Up), it had to ask the cashier for the amount again. What, only $1.30 for a medium? I really thought it was a mistake, so I doubt the hikes are that high!

  24. kekes says:

I think Larry has had too much coffee ! ROFL

  25. alex says:

my McDonald’s lid leaks almost everyday. gets my cup holder dirty everyday. gets my winter gloves wet everyday at 6am. tim’s never leak on me.

  26. michelle says:

just seems everything is going up But wage increases are NOT.. so same wage,, all products are increased

  27. Moe says:

Really!. . . The only ppl that should be happy about another Price increase is the Share Holders.
Put it this way. . . Have you ever seen a Time Hortans Close its doors Vs have you seen other Coffee shops shut down?
The American Corporation (The Owners) need to show a proffit increase?? even in these uncertain times, when many other corps are reducing prices Tims is Going to the well again, when is enough enough ???

  28. Kyla says:

justified, but their cup sizes are not.

  29. EdLeafs says:

Not too worry about the price increase. That’s what you expect to happen from a capitalist nation.

  30. natashas says:

rofl!!! Larry, I think you should stop making coffee at home. Just a suggestion.

    Torrefazione all the way!

  31. Debbie says:

I am a regular there…correction, was a regular…and most of my friends wont going be either.

  32. Peaches says:

This price increase is minimal. I think it’s fine.

  33. bhlombardy says:

I dont know… I used to be a McD’s coffee drinker too — and it’s only a matter of time before their prices follow Tim’s lead.

However when it’s litereally PENNIES a cup to produce, charging $1.30+ per cup is already obscene, increasing prices, instead of curbing waste, and cutting some costs within is just lazy practise.

Also, lest we forget that increasing prices is a typical profit-growth model among retail businesses. — espeically among vendors whose product is essentially identical day-in and day-out. Using the reason of “Increased costs”, although perhaps minimal, yet true, is just an excuse they pass on to the naive consumer to soften the impact.

  34. bhlombardy says:

    ….

However, since I discovered Keurig since Christmas… I now pay 45c a cup, AND for a larger cup than I’m used to, I might add.

I brew it just before I head out the door each day. So, not only does it save me money, it saves me time as I dont have to sit in a drive through on the way to work.

Not only am I saving money, (and although I’m not much of a tree-hugger) I’m also saving the evironment in disposable cups…

Not to mention the gas (and related cost) that’s being burned idling while waiting in the drive through.

  35. sunny says:

I am holding a 100 $ Tim Card which is a special winning card of Rollup contest. Let me know if anyone interested in buying this special card. I started using it and you need to pay only the Balance left in the card. You can also recharge this card. Please leave your number (who ever interested) and I will get back to you.

  36. francesca says:

Please they make so much money so they can give the consumer a break to not raise the prices.

  37. Joe Medad says:

Tim’s put something in there coffee to make people need their coffee.
Or are people that stupid. They keep building new Tim’s, and would they do this if they were loosing money.
If they needed more money to pay their slave labor. Or maybe a medical plan for them. Then yes to the increase.
But a big NO to increase.. I did not get a raise.
Ma and Pa Coffee shops support people in your area.

  38. Vic009 says:

switched to brewing my own at home(K-cups)…so much better. Now if only I could produce my own fuel?!

  39. olivercat says:

I do not disagree with the price increase, but I am shocked that one company can get soooooo much attention and discussion when they raise their price on a ‘optional’ item and Ontario Hydro can raise their prices and inflict time frame pricing and not recieve the media attention coffee gets.

  40. Seniora says:

and yet we get a salary freeze for 2 years!!!

  41. who cares says:

I don’t care. I’ll go less often and make my own. Tim Horton’s has lost a lot of favour with me. They plan to expand in the Middle East. What a dumb idea! Their 1 in 6 chance to win in the recent Roll up The Rim Contest didn’t work for me. I bought a heck of a lot more than 6 coffees but won nothing.

  42. Amanda says:

I agree with olivercat. I don’t understand why people are complaining so much about Tim Horton’s raising their prices when everything they sell is optional. If you don’t like the price, don’t buy it. I am complaining instead about the cost of essentials and the rising cost of gas and the rising cost of living thanks to the hydro companies, yet our minimum wage is capped now.

  43. Amanda says:

I forgot to say that yes I do go to Tim Horton’s but since the last price increase not nearly as often, I have discovered instant coffee and drink that at home now instead.

  44. jennanicole says:

There is a brand called The Great Canadian Coffee by PC and it is on sale right now the large can at Fortinos for 9.99 it tastes like Timmy’s and it is almost half the price …try it, my friend says that it is made by the same company…who knows, but we like it 🙂

  45. LARRY says:

ALL COFFEE ON ME TO-DAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!lol

  46. brian says:

although this is a minor price increase on a luxury item (not needed)
it’s another sad sign that the general cost of living is far exceeding what employers are will to pay out in salaries.

prices are always so quick to go up, along with profits. Who gets screwed in the end? the consumer.. who has to somehow make his money go further.

Don’t forget about tax hikes!! must not forget those.

  47. thatgengirl says:

I usually make my own coffee at home,(organic, fair-trade, but when I do go to Timmies, I bring a reuseable cup and save 10¢ on my coffee. If the 7¢ increase chaps you, I suggest bringing your own mug from now on.

  48. willowsprite says:

Yet another reason to switch to home brew in a reusable mug! It’s so easy, it will always be cheaper, and earth-friendly. And you use less gas ’cause you’re not idling in line! 😀
I still want to campaign for a scratch card when you bring in a reusable mug, instead of roll up the rim. Everyone would be bringing in their mugs and it would look so good on the company!!

  49. george says:

if one of the reasons is the increased price of sugar, i would imagine cream and milk fit into that too. sooooo, why can’t us who drink their coffee black get a deal. i way i figure it, all coffee places i have frequented, owe me for the years i have not used their sugar/cream/milk. let’s see..maybe i could sue someone, get a large settlement, retire and make my own coffee with all the extra time on my hands

  50. anon says:

This price increase reminds me of a joke I heard. “Everything (in this cases, prices of you name it) goes up, nothing goes down … except the rain!! 🙂

  51. TallNFunny says:

People, if you’re not going to make your coffee at home, at LEAST do something for the environment and bring your own reusable cup!!!! Especially those people complaining about the lids!

  52. Plo Koon says:

Well, justified. However, tim horton’s coffee is not cheap (it looks cheap because the large size coffee cost still under 2.00$ Tax-in). But if you get regular size second-cup (true canadian coffee), you still get even bigger size coffee with better quality (100% arabica coffee) under $2.00. Please do not be mislead by Timmy’s tiny sized cups… (Timmy’s medium << Small size coffee in Second cup or Starbucks)

  53. J says:

Someone called it before on the roll up the rim thread.
Prices always go up after the contest ends. Without fail.

  54. hylissa says:

Dunno about where you all are from, but here in BC Timmy’s prices just went up a few months ago! now again?!?! w – t – f !

  55. AJ says:

re: “Cost of wheat has DOUBLED in the last year”

I knew that coffee tasted funny. *blech*

  56. Lori Smith says:

It is sad all prices can go up but the wages still remain the same. There is no difference between canada and a third work country

  57. nev says:

Yeah, back when I worked there in 08 I remember a medium costing 1.24 – after the price hike then. It’s not a large hike but its definately not worth it. Everything there is processed, nothing is made from scratch. The egg patties come frozen and get defrosted – gross. Price hike should be a good sign because it SHOULD be an indicator that coffee farmers are getting more money, and that employees are getting paid more but that is not the case. For ‘minimum’ wage, the amount of work and sweat a Tims employee actually puts into the job is far more than minimum.

And their small cup sizes… dont get me started!! go to starbucks! Their smallest size is the equivalent of a Tims large and for under 2$, you get WAY better coffee, a nicer atmosphere, better service, and you can put as much sugar/milk as you want (think how many times has tims gotten your order wrong…) I know people think Starbucks is stuck up – so go to second cup, more bang for your buck.

  58. Billy says:

Compared to most price increases, this is quite reasonable.

Look at the prices of bread, the cost of wheat in a loaf goes up 20 cents and they add 1 dollar or more.

  59. Tanya Lewis says:

Funny how everyone is just accepting this as “reasonable” and “justified”. Do you know how much it truly costs them for a regular large coffee!? I’m not making this up- after they factor in the cost of gas, the cup, cream, sugar, employee etc.. IT’S $0.11! Okay, that number was calculated 6 months ago, so with inflation, it might cost them a whopping $0.12 now! Justified increase? I think NOT.

  60. LARRY says:

yes tanya 2 many people accept the price increases with a grain of salt. shareholders have never made as much money since the big bank collapse in 2008. its screw all of the people all of the time now. i’ll drink 2 that

  61. devothegreat says:

Well first thing I notice is a split take, almost 50/50. Most of the arguments for both sides were valid, that was until I came across the post stating that it cost pennies to make a pot of coffee, and while the pot of coffee its self may only be worth around 2 dollars, operating costs also need to get factored into that as well (such as land tax, staff wages, the % of money {not profits} that goes to TDL and hydro). Minimum wage has gone up more then 3 dollars since I started working, and prices go up accordingly. I bet almost everyone on here complaining about the price mark up did NOT complain about minimum wage increases. TDL (the company that owns tim hortons) has raised the price of its goods that it ships to the stores, and that means that the stores have to charge more to make a profit for themselves. I don’t care one way or another because I make coffee at home 90% of the time, or get my coffee elsewhere. In short if you don’t like the increased prices, go elsewhere and be happy when you do it, but for everyone else it is only about a 3% increase and tim hortons thanks you for your patronage.
