If you like Reader’s Digest, you can get a free issue for free right now. Then, if you like the magazine you can sign up for a subscription for $24.97/year, (plus $7.99 s&h) which is apparently a 51% savings of the yearly cover price. If you don’t want a subscription, just write cancel on the invoice and owe nothing. There is no obligation and the free issue is yours to keep.
Please note this is an introductory offer, you get one free issue and then if you like it, you can pay for a subscription, lots of magazines offer this.
Thanks to mhuckabay for sharing this offer with us!

i’ll pass, never liked readers digest all that much.I do subscribe to chatelaine, good housekeeping, homemakers, canadian living, flare, elle, etc.some were free with offers, but others I’ve had delivered for over 30 yrs.
Hi – this link is not working 🙁
hey polacco65 – not sure what the problem is, I keep editing it and it keeps adding on smartcanucks.ca to the beginning ugh.
the link is http://www.readersdigest.ca/cbc
Just FYI, RD bugs the crap out of their non-subscribers (i.e. free trial addresses). They will continue to harass you for subscriptions almost indefinitely, and I tested a “fake name” with their free trial once – they sell their mailing list to companies like Publisher’s Clearing House which will also send you junk mail to no end. I think I’ll pass on this one too.
Don’t do it. Reader’s digest will SCAM you with stuff. They sent me a ‘free’ book, but then they keep sending you stuff unless you opt out and they WILL charge you. Trust me, bad idea.
eeh.. just an FYI… Reader’s Digest is in bankruptcy protection. so… if you ”were”planning on getting a subscription.. just be aware what you are getting in…

@Cate, the same thing happened to me. I got a trial offer like way back in the day, like 2000. I still get shit from them till this day. Mostly all these “win $x, claim your ticket now”. readers digest = Scam. Stay away.
It’s the same with a lot of “free trials”. Obviously they lose money unless you sign up, to they make it as hard as they can for you to just take the freebies and leave. At the very least, they have all your contact info to bombard with more “special offers”. Zip.ca is another one, I have heard lots about people who try to cancel after their free trial, and then are told that “unfortunately” one of their DVDs didn’t arrive, and they either have to pay for it or sign a contract. Seriously, if they’re giving you something for free that would otherwise cost a fair bit of money, you have to know that they’re not going to leave it at that or let you go easily.
Same here.SCAM…they wont stop sending you stuff even if you refused and return all..then they send tons of crap for their contest which is bogus and never give them your email because even if you unsubscribe, they havent…
scam
reader’s digest is a scam? just write cancel on the invoice when you get it, that works for me.
If you are writing “cancel” or “return to sender” on the outside of the envelopes etc, 99.9% of the time it will not be returned to them.
If you look on the outside envelope (the one that was sent to you) where the stamp would normally go, you will notice that it says “addressed admail”. This means that the sender has negotiated a lower rate for their mass mailings, and therefore has not paid for any “return to senders” etc. 99% of the time this mail is collected back at the postal plants and then is sent for shredding and recycling.
You must send something directly back to the company (or find a phone number which they must provide in order to cancel) indicating that you don’t want their product.
Thanks for all the info everyone, made my decision easier.
I watched a CBC Marketplace episode about their questionable marketing technique. Too bad, because I quite enjoy the contents of the magazine.
Here’s a link about it:
http://www.cbc.ca/marketplace/2009/how_not_to_win_500000/links.html
Weird that it was CBC episode, because CBC is sponsoring this reader’s digest offer.
And when I meant write cancel, I meant on the invoice, like I said, not on the envelope.
Believe what the above readers say …..be careful of Readers Digest…they will bug the Hell out of you….if/when you stop or say NO! I had Readers Digest for years…than quit (or tried) as the magazine got thinner and smaller (to many American stories too). Now I subscribe, read and ENJOY HELLO CANADA…..not a bad price if subscribe to either!!! That’s my 2 cents worth…………
Thanks for this mayne.
I agree with the majority here. You get the free copy and you can be guaranteed to be bombarded with junk mail from them forever. I tried it once, wrote cancel on the invoice and still received several more copies afterward that they tried to get me to pay for. They sent several invoices but with each one I wrote a letter explaining that I had already sent the first invoice back with cancel on it and would not be paying for their mistake. They finally stopped sending invoices but to this day I still receive a ton of junk mail from them. Very frustrating.
i want to have a free copy of readers digest.
my mailing adress is 2282 St-Georges Longueuil J4K 4A8 Canada

@ amina – I got a couple of issues from this offer, I kept getting an invoice. I sent it back with “please cancel” all over the bill. Hopefully that works.
They keep sending me invoices, and now they’re threatening to send it to collections. what do i do?
