In July 2013, the cost of a Canadian passport will rise from the current price of $87 to $120-160 depending on how many years it will be valid. They will be introducing 10 year ePassports at $160 which include a chip for added security.
Starting in 2014 there will also be fees for replacing lost or stolen passports (currently free).
View a full list of the fees here and check when your passports expire, it will be worth sending an early renewal if you can.
I didn’t know there’s A 10-year passport! It would be a better deal. I don’t think there is an option on the application. How can one apply for one?
Currently, a 5 year passport costs $87. The new 10 year passport, at $160, is actually a savings of $14 over its ten year span. It’s only if you’re looking to buy a 5 year passport that you will pay an additional $33.
I thought those new chip passports were coming out early 2013? My passport expired a week ago and I have been holding off on renewing. If the new chip ones do not come out until July, I might have to renew now. Does anyone know when these new chip passports are going to be available?
Stolen and lost passport replacements are NOT free. You’ll have to go through the same process as applying for a new one w/ 87$ fee. I’ve had to have it done twice.
If people are trying to save money the 10 year passport is a better deal. The fees increase next July so I’m wondering if that is when the 10 year passport, which is long overdue, will be available.
How much is it to renew a five year passport in canada?
