Canadian Recalls: Dollarama Baby Bibs Sold in Summer 2011 Contain Phthalates

Announcements

dangerbibs

The pictured bibs above that were sold at Dollarama have been recalled because “…the bibs’ lining contains a phthalate, specifically DEHP (Di(2-ethylhexyl) Phthalate), which exceeds the allowable limit.

Studies suggest that certain phthalates, including DEHP, may cause reproductive and developmental abnormalities in young children when soft vinyl products containing phthalates are sucked or chewed for extended periods.

Neither Health Canada nor Dollarama has received any reports of incidents or illnesses related to the use of these bibs.”

Item numbers 19-1900392 and 19-3018618 sold between July-August 2011 are the only ones affected.  See full details here.

This is unfortunate as these were awesome bibs. I had to toss quite a few of my sons.

Yet they can continue to use phthalates in Johnson’s baby wash/shampoo… go figure. guess it is a specific kind they limit and not others…

  2. skinnyminnie007 says:

I love a deal but i would never ever buy baby stuff from the dollar store. NEVER!!!!

  3. Amy Johnson says:

Johnsons baby shampoo is so alkaline it can actually perm a persons hair.. don’t trust that stuff EVER.

  4. anne says:

Made in China…Remember the tainted baby formula scandal? At what price pandas in our zoos?

  5. Kelly says:

Amy Johnson – Where are you citing this from?

Re: “Neither Health Canada nor Dollarama has received any reports of incidents or illnesses related to the use of these bibs.”

Of course they haven’t heard of anything…they stated that it “may cause reproductive and developmental abnormalities” which would probably not have developed in less than a year.

  6. Tracy says:

I will br throwing out a whole drawer of these as they were also my favourite bibs. They had nice rubber backing, absorbent on the front, fit around my kids necks perfect and washed up great. Too bad.

  7. Gnorman says:

I agree that Dollarama and other such stores should be avoided when it comes to products for children. We all need to question where the things we buy are coming from. Consider not just the diminutive cost to ourselves, but also the reasons why such products are so cheap to begin with. The pandas are cute, Mr. Harper, but if this means free trade with China, send them home.

  8. supermandy says:

lol – someone bought me a basket of dollaramma stuff for my baby shower – INCLUDING pacifiers!

I tossed most of it. I realize that other stores sell tons of made in China stuff that may be sketchy too for a bigger price – but when it comes to my baby, I am not willing to take the chance because something is cheap.

Anyone ever notice the side of a Del Monte can? The last one I had said made in China… Now if I ask my son where he was made – he says “China” lol. (It was actually Cuba! haha)

  9. Alyssa says:

Some products that are sold at Dollarama are also sold at Wal Mart and grocery stores. Other products are complete knock-offs that illegally use well-known brands. So, what do you do?

I think that pthalates can be sold in products in small quantities. This one exceeded the limits. Pthalates can be sold in shampoos if they meet the government’s guidelines.

  10. Sarah says:

i would never buy stuff from dollarama for my children. I am already sketchy about the pregnancy tests they sell there. I also stopped buying Johnsons head to toe because there is an ingredient that can cause skin cancer it’s called Quaternium-15 I get the Johnsons that helps the baby sleep because it doesn’t have the ingredient in it!

You really should remove these bibs from children before tossing.
    (LOL, sorry couldn’t resist…)

i think that should go without saying LOL!

  13. elza says:

everyone talking about dollarama baby products, but do you know what government of Canada hiding in immunization baby shots and even in water running from our faucets? It is at least 10 times harmful than any phtalates

  14. lizzy says:

I personally do not feel there is anything wrong with their pregnancy tests. I used them and it told me when I was pregnant. Sure beat spending $10 or however much it costs at the pharmacy a couple times a month. However, for anything that my child might put in her mouth, I have not purchased at the dollar store. Personal choice.

  15. Kim says:

“I am already sketchy about the pregnancy tests they sell there.”

I used one and came back positive…now 5 months along. Not sure I would trust a negative result, though.

  16. Smart Shopper says:

Sandra, your comment made me LOL 😀

  17. E. Blaze says:

“….when sucked or chewed for extended periods.” I’m wondering what mother would let their baby suck or chew any plastic for an extended period? I didn’t need government warnings to know that my children shouldn’t be chewing or sucking sheet plastic….

my neighbor’s sister makes $74 every hour on the computer. She has been without work for 7 months but last month her check was $8673 just working on the computer for a few hours. Read more on this site MakeCash7d0tCom

You’re worried about Pthalates? Have you heard of the other 126 chemicals in health and beauty products?

I recently purchased the book “There’sLead in Your Lipstick” was shocked by the number of harmful chemicals we are exposed to daily. Pick it up, it’s well worth the read.

  20. erriecutie says:

I have recently bought splash balls from dollarma and put them in the bath tub for my daughter, picked one up and the paint was coming off!!! I contacted dollarama and they only asked me what store I bought them from and never responded back to me with this concern!! VERY ticked off at dollarama right now…

  21. Emmie says:

A simple google search can tell you that to be safe it’s best not to buy things from dollar stores that a child may put in their mouth. Kids jewellry and their mugs have also been known to contain lead.

  22. SeriousSally says:

Note some of the bibs come with built in teething rings, clearly they were meant to be sucked and chewed on, how gross is that? I also received a gift bag full of dollar store stuff when my son was born, which included baby bottles, and toy rattles. Needless to say it went straight to the garbage, there’s not much I trust from dollar stores in general.

  23. Jenn says:

Dollar stores are great places to find certain bargains, although there seems to be less nowadays. You can get away with buying some of the items there, but there are some items that i will always stay away from, like things for infants and toddlers. All countries can produce low quality and high quality goods, some more than others. The prices for them are usually a dead give away.

    To supermandy,
No surprise with the Del Monte can. I was equally surprised when i read “Made In China” on the Compliments fruit cups at Sobeys. It made me opt to buy the more expensive one.

  24. Natatoo says:

Dollarama, you are DEAD to me

  25. Katherine says:

I still have a few of these bibs! I contacted Dollarama and they informed me that Benoit Grenier could be contacted with any recall concerns (514 444 3218 or [email protected]).

  26. Vanessa says:

Everyone here seems concerned only with Dollarama however nasty things are found in products no matter what store you buy them- chances are that unless you buy your soaps or food from a local organic business, they have something harmful. I’m not saying not to be careful but saying be careful no matter where you purchase things whether it’s for your kids or yourself.
