Canadian Shopping News: Goodwill Stores Across Ontario Closing

Goodwill Donation Centre

Some news for thrift shoppers, especially those in the Toronto area, 16 Goodwill stores, plus 10 donation centres and 2 offices have closed due to a cash flow crisis.  This impacts stores in the GTA, Barrie, Orillia and Brockville.

Workers showed up to work on Sunday to find that the stores had not been opened with no notice and donations are piling up outside donation centres.

Goodwill receives an annual subsidy from the federal and provincial governments totalling $4 million and since most items sold are donated, overhead should be employee costs and store costs.  Goodwill says that they are exploring a variety of options to continue its decades-long mission but in the mean time, you may want to head to Value Village or other thrift stores.

While this makes me sad, I am not surprised. There are about 4 goodwill stores that I can easily get to and only one is worth shopping at. The other three are very disorganized: clothes are not separated by size, everything else is everywhere and the stores are filthy.

At least they are one of the good ones that maintain ‘thrift’ pricing. Value Village is just another giant corporation that while well organized will create a monopoly in the resale market and jack up prices (which they have steadily been doing for years now).

Maybe the CEO should take a pay cut from his $2Million+ salary. I can’t understand how there is a “cashflow” issue when all they do is take people donations and sell them for profit. Goodwill is NOT a charity folks. If you have stuff to donate, donate to Salvation Army or another organization where the executive salaries aren’t draining the cashflow.

I rather give it to Value Village as the Salvation Army is an anti-gay church.

      • georgia says:

Salvation Army is a great organization. Salvation Army helps when people are displaced due to hurricanes, fires, floods, ice storms etc. Salvation Army operates world wide. When you make your comment about them, you have made a narrow and misguided statement, devaluing all the honest, noble and unselfish work of the Salvation Army.

        Shame on you. Shame.

  4. Mars says:

My mistake…that is the salary for the CEO in the US chapter of Goodwill. The one in Toronto only makes $300,000.

Goodwill also gets $4 million in federal and provincial subsidies.

    Cash Flow issues??…it’s called GREED.
