Canadian students file your income tax online free with quick tax!

money

With tax season in full gear qualifed students can file their taxes quickly and easily using Quick tax online for free!  I’ve used quick tax for years and have always found the product to be efficient and easy to file mine and my husbands taxes.

Not a student? You can “try” the online version out free before you pay. I did this and lets just say I unfortunately do not have a refund coming this year so I will be filing on the deadline (sigh!)

I stopped buying the cd’s in store long ago since it’s more enviromentally friendly to just download the software.

How do you file your taxes? Online, accountant, H&R  block or *gasp* the paper way?

I use to go to H&R Block until I realized just how many errors they were making and how much money I was wasting for something I could do myself with Quick tax in 10 minutes and have my refund in a few weeks!  My last visit was 5 years ago and they made a “mistake'”and said I owed $1900! Lets just say it was a huge error and Igot back $1500.

    studiotax.com is free for everyone!

h&r made a mistake on my hubbys years ago too. but there’s one thing about quicktax I HATE. it tells you if your married to do your taxes together to claim the max amt of discounts. well, my friend is a rev can tax auditor, and she said that’s not the case at all. it’s in your benefit to do 2 separate returns regardless of amount of income.

so i did it both ways with quicktax this year. together we pay in over 1,000. separately my hubby gets back 2,300. guess which way i filed?

  3. Sally says:

Oh really NS, I thought we HAD to caim together?

  4. Ally says:

If you claimed together last year, can you file separately this year?

  5. Kamila says:

If you use ufile.ca and make below a certain amount it is also free, ie) students.

  6. ehtrac says:

I heard that the H&R software available to the public this year, is FULL with bugs/erros. Beware if you purchase this one over quicktax or ufile.

I want to try doing it on 2 separate returns. since it said that we owed money this year. Correct me if I am wrong but don’t you have to put your spouses income in there? how will doing 2 separate returns help. I really don’t want to pay if I can help it! thanks for your help!

  8. Sally says:

I’m wondering the same thing Mousy!

This free return is only free if the student doesn’t have ANY other income or deductions. It is rather useless and a quick way for them to grab $15 if you ‘want to upgrade’ and be able to “have a life” 🙂

  10. xbbx says:

ergh x__x; i just did it to see how much i can get in return, apparently i owe 221 dollars. I have no money to pay that back due to the recession- my hours got cut.

  11. Spevia says:

For the last few years i’ve used StudioTax…it’s totally free (unless you want to make a small donation but that’s totally up to you) and i’ve had no problems.

  12. ThatguyRob says:

I’ve been using StuioTax as well the last few years as i don’t have “complicated” tax returns and it’s not only saved me a lot of headaches and but a few bucks as well.

  13. Tammy says:

I was told last year when I filed before I got moarried that once I was married we had to file as a married couple. How can we file separatedly then? And once you are married only one of you can get the GST rebate (if you make too little which I do as I am a supply teacher). So how would that work if we are filing separately?

  14. mousy says:

I just tried it, and it did make a difference. I still put in my DH income amount but instead of paying 900 we get 600 back which really surprised me. I still put in that he is claiming for GST and put both of our incomes in there. I wish I knew about this last year. I may have made a difference! The CCTB is still the same but that is fine with me. I double checked everything carefully to make sure it was accurate which it is so this is the way I am going to submit it.

Has anyone called the ccra to confirm we are allowed to do this?
Chad had me claimed as a dependant on his tax forms since I wasn’t going to be making much since im a SAHM, but I ended up making more then planned.

I don’t understand how to do this, or if its legal, since we’ve always filed together lol!

Wink wink nudge nudge, any accountants out there?

  16. lgali says:

I use studiotax.com last year nice and free

Thanks for this Quick Tax Sally,I did mine yesterday for free 🙂 Only thing was the access codes for Quebec I had to phone to get mine and well I could not get my hubbys so I will mail his in. I was wondering thow ??? what do we do with our T4 SLIPS EH? do we keep them? Usally my income tax returns looks like scribble from a baby with a crayon.

  18. Sally says:

Keep them in a safe place~! Just in case of an audit.

  19. Molly says:

nsangel – you still have to claim your spouse’s income even if you file seperately. It is right there on page 1 of the T1 General. It sounds like when you prepared your returns together the program that you were using automatically optmized the credits and did not give you the spouse/common-law partner amount. That credit is provided to the taxpayer if they have a no or low income spouse.

If you have that much of a refund difference it sounds like you did not enter your spouse’s income on to the return and accidently claimed the spouse amount (which you would be entittled to if you spouse did indeed have no income).

I should mention I am not a professional tax preparer. Just someone who does their taxes for everyone in their large family.

  20. Sally says:

    Makes sense Molly, thankS!

  21. Karalyn says:

A bit belated, but you do indeed need to claim your spouse/common-law partner’s income. They want the household amount, basically. If you fail to report your partner’s income as well, you will basically be dinged for fraud and set yourself up for penalty fees at the least, criminal charges at the worst.

  22. Sally says:

Thanks Karalyn! I filed as per usual with us together, it didn’t seem right to do it the other way.

  23. Livid says:

It’s not free for students anymore. Those greedy assholes are now making you pay if you have a T2202A.

  24. Intuit sucks anyways says:

Use uFile – free for students with a T2202A and coupon code FAY1493

  25. Colleen says:

I just filed mine with QuickTax and had a T2202A.. it is still free, they get your billing address but do not require a credit card number or anything… this is the second year I’ve used QuickTax (I have relatively straight forward returns) and I love it!
